As we've all said before, I don't think we will ever see Angelina's performance (of anything) topped by anyone except Angelina. In this case, we are still waiting for anyone to top Angelina's b/w, 9 yo, performance. Can it be done? Maybe, by AJ, someday. Let's face it, that performance, at age 9, was a "perfect storm" event, unlikely to occur again. It will go into the books as "that legendary performance by a 9 year old" and people will just have have to accept it.
We have to consider that this is an amateur band and they aren't there to support Angelina but instead she's there as a guest artist to sprinkle a little angel dust over. their concert. Btw, @A-Aronreacts you mustn't miss Angelina's performance of this song 12 years old at Kongsbergs Jazz Festival, part of an audio only (pro quality) "video". There was another song she did during this practice. She put her phone in her back pocket, Micheal grabbed it and sat back down. She reached for her now missing phone, while singing looks back and sees that Michael has it. She stretched the microphone cable out but was out if reach. It was funny seeing her reaction.
This performance within an Angelina mini-concert (at least five songs, of which IPASOY is the middle one in the set list) was part of the traditional New Year's concert that Oppegård Janitsjar has played every year since 1985. The band has in all years since 1931 mainly consisted of musicians from the Oppegård municipality and they call themselves "an amateur band for young people and adults". So please don't be too harsh with your judgement, even if it is justified - of course Angelina's voice comes out much better with top-class accompaniment, like a week before at "Feeling good" on "The Stream gir tilbake" concert and two weeks before that at the Alan Walker Homecoming concert (so it's crystal clear that it has nothing to do with her age). This is one of the rare occasions the formula “Year of performance minus 2006 = Angelina’s age” does not work. It’s the last of three annual New Year concerts featuring several artists along with Oppegård Janitsjar, held Jan 6th-8th, 2017 in Kolben cultural and activity centre in Kolbotn, Norway. This video is captured from the live stream that was posted on Angelina's FB page in January 2017 and shows a part of the 8th January concert. Kolbotn is an small urban area (population is about 6,000) near Oslo, Norway (in fact a stone’s throw south of Oslo’s city border and 8 miles away from downtown Oslo). At the time of this concert Bjørn Morten Kjærnes served as director of Ski’s cultural school (as well as conductor to Oppegård janitsar 2015-2020) - the guy who conduct and did the small talk here. He is primarily a music educator, but he has also conducted many school and janitsar bands. He is also a talented arranger, composer and music producer for wind orchestras and brass bands. At the music publisher Norsk Noteservice AS he is responsible for the publication of brass music. Therefore, it could be that he was the one who put Angelina in touch with Forsvarets Musikkorps (he later served as producer for the "It's Magic" album). Angelina seems quite relaxed here, also during the short interview. Did you notice the small carpet they provided her? 🙂 Unfortunately the full conversation at the beginning is cut in RMX YT video - my Norwegian is quite bad but as far as I understand Angelina was asked something regarding her age during the Small talk and her answer contained the phrase “when I was young” (she was still 10yo at the time), hence some laughter. “What a difference a day makes” and “Feeling good” along with this “I put a spell on you” still can be watched on Angelina’s FB. According to Boris who attended this concert she also sang "Fly Me to the Moon" and "At Last". This performance of IPASOY is very similar to those at German little big stars (recorded Feb 2017) and at Muse in City festival, Seoul (April 2017, the one with Norah Jones) and in both it seems to me much more mature with a much more natural deep voice - two years after the legendary b/w studio recording, no vocal "tricks" were required anymore. The fact that the b/w video has become so iconic could be due to the perfect instrumental accompaniment as well as the excellent cinematography of the video which supported her performance very well.
She definitely has performed the better since this time, but never as exciting as her original. Not really surprised that this band was not the best match. It’s a janissary band/orchestra based on an old Ottoman military band type. In Norway today their musical style is more like American concert bands and they often performs as marching bands. In don’t believe they play much jazz, so that may explain their playing style. Thanks for your reaction. 🎼🎵🎶🖤
She sang this a couple times again, but I think in the meantime she was told she had done some things that could damage her voice, so she never has sung it the same again, thank God. She sang it again at Nora’s concert and again, toned it down quite a bit. Also, the first one was with a jazz band whereas this is an orchestra.
The black n white version is a freak of history. I will alway hope for an adult Angelina to perform another, I Put a Spell on You, with her letting loose and pushing her limits like the 9 year old version.
The nine year old version was stellar but she was only going to do it that way for that version! She was instructed to protect her vocal instrument because some of the effects that she used could damage vocal cords and folds! Personally loved the nine year old version and 11 year old version opening for Norah Jones in South Korea! 🇳🇴🇺🇸💯

Bear in mind that the 9yo version was a studio production. We don’t know how much editing was involved in the audio. (There was a year between recording and release)
Hello Aron, enjoying your reactions again, I loved it, I know it's different, I try not to compare, everything is different, one in the studio and the other I think it's recorded from a phone, singing with a band and an orchestra, but there is the great Angelina, with her incredible bass, her vibratos, with those endings in each phrase that are wonderful, every time I hear her voice incredible things happen, Aron, thank you very much for the reaction, and Angelina forever
That was bad advice, because voice teachers have commented that there are safe ways to do everything she did at 9, and in fact even then she was remarkably relaxed and not in real danger of straining her voice.
I think almost everyone agrees that this is not the level of the 9-year-old performance. I think mostly, it's because of the band. I think she is trying to work with them as best she can. In my opinion, there are several recordings of her performing this song, but none ever top the 9-year-old performance for just pure wow factor.
I think the 9 year old version is special for the shock value. I also wonder if she was warned about continued use of some of the techniques she used in the 9 yr old version and her long term vocal health.
I agree that the nine year old studio is, by far, the best of the several times she has recorded this song. While I don’t know for certain, I suspect that there was some concern about protecting her voice and that subsequent versions were toned down to preserve her voice.
Last Christmas Mery posted another rehearsal of this song from this same session on her yasslayqueenslayforever TT. The conductor here was Bjørn Morten Kjærnes. He later established the contact with the Forsvarets Stabsmusikkorps. He produced their "It's Magic" album and arranged 6 of the songs of it, including Angelina's first two published originals, What is Life, and Oslo.
She has never performed this song anything like the famous studio version. This is more representative of all her performances after the video. She may have experienced some discomfort during that session or realized the things she did were not sustainable for a full concert set. Or maybe she just developed new techniques that better suited her feeling for the song.
I agree A ARon , In her younger version she just went off like a grenade and let loose ! It seems as she has gotten older she's more reserved and is worried what people will think? Where as the younger Angelina just Knocked the song out and said there it is folks deal with it !
❤️❤️❤️❤️👣 This is the song that got me addicted to Angelina. The 9 year old version. She never again performed the song in the same 9 year old way. I have read others say it was to protect her voice. No idea if this is true. This also seems like a cell phone recording with much lower fidelity.
I've also heard that about protecting her voice, but I've also heard from at least three accomplished vocal coaches who said she was not damaging her voice because of the way she was doing it. Of course, I have no clue; I'm not a vocal coach or even sing particularly well.

Hi. I agree with everything you said, but remember that the 9 year old version is a studio recording. They may have recorded it several times before they were satisfied. I would love to hear Angelina sing this now.
Yes, the 9 year old and band version was absolutely beyond awesome version than this version you are reacting to in this video ❤️🔥 this orchestra sounds like a high-school orchestra that has never done a jazz song, that's what iam hearing, just saying 🙏
I think it was hard on her voice, that is why the changes. She is experimenting with finding a proper way to make the sounds. The 9 year old version, wonder how many takes, because the effect it might had on her voice and thought I better not do that any more. When she performed at the Nora Jones Concert when she was 11, I believe she found the best way to perform this song without damaging her vocal cords, my opinion, God Bless!
This is not a song for an orchestra where every instrument gets a part. Both the original and Angelina’s studio only had a five piece backing. If you want to hear a full jazz orchestra listen to Rhapsody in Blue with Gershwin or Bernstein. Angelina is great and no longer sounds like a kid. Hard to fly like an eagle with turkeys in the way

The tuba in this arrangement just kills the whole thing for me. It takes the mysterious/dangerous vibe completely out of the song and gives John Phillip Sousa marching band vibes. This is the type of song that needs a smaller tighter ensemble for an intimate performance. BTW, this appears to me to be a concert band rather than an orchestra. I don't see/hear any strings. I think AJ may have agreed to work with them because of her positive experience with the Norwegian military concert band Fosvarets Stabsmusikkorps. Now that's a tight outfit!

Her voice just changed.... This is the time when Angelina's voice is developing as she is growing up. As far as I remember there are no live performances of IPASOY when she's 9 and most live performances happen when she's 10 or 11... And the scream you're talking she never did that in any of her live performances available of the song.
I am pretty sure when I first saw this in studio some of the commentary was about her advice being she could sing this this way once but she would ruin her voice if she continued with that particular style. I think all would have made sure she followed that advice.
I don't think Angelina sings any song the same way twice. With that being said, I do think this one is at a slower beat or pase whatever you wanna call it.
This first group is one of worst she has had trying to back her up, this one does not share her passion in this song. Her 9 year old performance was a vocal masterpiece that will stand as one of the greatest versions of this song ever., not soon to be ever topped. This conductor tends to try to direct her instead of following her.
I believe this is a community band of amateur musicians & they certainly aren't very good. In fact, probably one of the worst bands she ever played with. She was also advised to protect her voice after the 9yo version, so she cut out the screams & growls. She gave a great performance on Little Big Shots on German TV when she was 10 or 11, but it is still not as shocking as the classic B&W version. ua-cam.com/video/RfvKk86NQAw/v-deo.html
No singer goes "full-throated" during a rehearsal. Vocal coaches will agree. What she did in the studio was magic, but stressed her vocal chords. She is taking more of a professional approach here. Geesh, cut her some slack.

I agree, the band was a constraint on her.

This conductor tends to try to direct her instead of following her.
she is 10,5 years old
It was less than two months after her 10th birthday when she recorded the black n white version.

I believe this is a community band of amateur musicians & they certainly aren't very good. In fact, probably one of the worst bands she ever played with. She was also advised to protect her voice after the 9yo version, so she cut out the screams & growls. She gave a great performance on Little Big Shots on German TV when she was 10 or 11, but it is still not as shocking as the classic B&W version. ua-cam.com/video/RfvKk86NQAw/v-deo.html
some of the notes the clarinets played seemed to be totally out of place for the song
I think this band simply did not inspire Angelina. There were very few I Put A Spell On You performances after the 9 yr old.❤❤👣❤❤
Spellbound by the nine year old Angelina - this was too much "ompa" instruments. Thanks for review.
Let’s face it, this is not the kind of song that should be accompanied by any orchestra much less one that sounds like high school level. Peace
No singer goes "full-throated" during a rehearsal. Vocal coaches will agree. What she did in the studio was magic, but stressed her vocal chords. She is taking more of a professional approach here. Geesh, cut her some slack.
I think you're misinterpreting my honesty and transparency for a lack of love and amazement for her but that could not be further from the truth
