    with regards to the hang on back/ canister filter intakes i find that a polyester scouring pad works quite well to keep baby shrimp out of pumps, just remember placing anything over an intake does affect the flow but also provides extra mechanical filtration.

    Hi Richard
    Nicki from Young Australia. Loving your videos.
    My shrimp are breeding well. I have been reluctant to add leaves to my tank for two reasons.
    1. Worried their decay may cause an ammonia spike in my 20 litre tank.
    2. If using leaves from my garden I worry I might poison the tank if pesticides present. We are on a rural property. Want to use unboiled autumn leaves as feel it may be more nutritious than boiled. Some people give them a good rinse and soak them for a day or two first. If shrimp are eating the biofilm and not the leaf then boiling won’t hurt but would it even get rid of pesticides if they were present?
    Have you thought about doing a video on this? 🙏

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  Рік тому +1

      Hello Nicki. Glad you are enjoying the videos.
      Now, I am no expert in the art of removing pesticides from leaves, but I would imagine boiling the leaves would remove any nasties. Personally I find boiling the leaves for a few minutes also helps make sure they sink when added to the tank.
      Once autumn hits the UK, which is usually late September to early October, I intend to put out a video on using Oak leaves.
      I don’t find boiling the leaves has any long term effect on biofilm development on the leaves.
      Hope all that helps. Have a great day 👍🏻

    I would suggest that temperature, tank size and the age of the shrimp are three more reasons. If the water is very cold, if the tank is over crowded or very small, or if the shrimp are too young, you won't get any breeding.

    Love your content.. Question 🙋🏻‍♂️ , I have floating plants in my 10gal cherry shrimp tank. As we know the duckweed spreads quickly to the point I have to remove some. Are there baby shrimp in there? I see them upside-down eating. Just not sure if they lay eggs in there. I wouldn't want to participate in the decline of my shrimp colony. 😬😁

    • @FishKeepingAnswers

      @@FishKeepingAnswers I'm finding even with cutting back on feeding and doing little and often so no left over food that the water is really cloudy I have ordered a better filter as I think mine is just bare minimum,I have done a 50%water change but just wondered if there was one you would recommend I fully understand it will not be crystal clear and maybe I was not expecting my little dudes to be this messy👍

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  Рік тому

      So, you could have two different problems. The first is cloudy water as goldfish are typically fairly messy, and the second could be due to a bacteria bloom (not as bad as it sounds). Take a minute to check this video.
      ua-cam.com/video/2oFRZZ8JHuA/v-deo.html
      Also, if I may be 100% honest, 30 liters is really small for two fancy goldfish. Unfortunately a lot of shops (especially here in the UK) will happily sell small tanks and goldfish without letting the buyers know they are far too small. Sadly, you might need to consider a larger tank in the future. 😏
      I currently keep 4 fancy goldfish in 180 liters, and that requires an internal filter, a canister filter and weekly 75% water changes. I would get them a larger tank, but my wife would probably divorce me 😂😂😂

    I just put cherry shrimp in with my rubber nose plec (by exceedingly unusual combination of circumstances they actually bred and I have two baby rubbernose... this is super rare apparently) they are OK and won't eat baby shrimp? I though I would be safe with them? The genuinely just sucker the glass and wood... but they do eat algae wafers and pellets as well.

Oh my question, how come the my fishes don't eat them? My plants are Stticta, java moss on rocks and driftwood, valesneria, dwar sagitaria and water wisteria. And will they still keep breeding?

      They are eating them.

      If you have a high yield of babies, some will make it to adult but you could have 10x or 20x more if left alone.

    Hi Richard, could you give me tips to increasing shrimplet survival rate? I succesfully breed shrimp and keep the water stable. But the amount of shrimplet always decreasing each day. From 30 to 5 in a span of a week. I kept them in shrimp only tank without fish and i see no predators like planaria or hydra. My shrimp are just fine with no death. some say the shrimp is hiding but it's been a few day i'm not seeing the exact amount of shrimplet showed up. Could you give me advice so my shrimplet survive? Thankss

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  Рік тому +1

      Hi. It’s hard to give advice in specific circumstances, but do you ever see the dead bodies? If you feed a stable sinking food, do the babies come out. For example, if I plop a lump of Repashy at the very front of a shrimp tank, all the shrimp are drawn to it, allowing me to see who is in the tank.

    Is it possible for red cherry shrimp to become crystal red? I’m breeding red Cherry shrimp only but I just noticed around 4 of my babies shrimp coloration look like crystal red. Now they grow into juvenile shrimp and still maintaining those red and white colour. Any thoughts?

      Hi. It isn’t possible for Red Cherry Shrimp to become Crystal Red Shrimp as they are two different species of shrimp. However, you do get Red Cherry Shrimp that have colourless patches on their bodies. These are known as Red Rili Shrimp. I hope this helps 👍🏻

    Can be high temperature reason why shrimp aren’t breeding? I’m asking because I have shrimp since winter and they reproduced beautifully, but since the summer came and temperature in my aquarium increased to 25°C (google says it is 77 degrees Fahrenheit) I don’t see any of the females have any eggs. Young shrimps are still fine and growing. I have white pearl shrimp and I was told that temperatures up to 28°C are fine but I can’t find any other reason why they stop breeding.

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  Рік тому

      High temperature could potentially cause then to stop breeding. I suspect, when the water cools, they will start reproducing again. Would love to hear how you get on 🫶🏻

    Do i always leave the big breeder parents and only harvest babies or catch babies and let them grow out in a separate tank from the parents
    Thanks

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  Рік тому +3

      In the early days, we made the mistake of catching out and selling our best shrimp. This meant our customers were super happy, but the quality of our colony decreased over time.
      The solution: decide how many you want to keep (let’s say 100 to keep things simple). Remove your BEST 100 shrimp first and set them a side. Next, catch and count all the remaining shrimp (let’s say 200 for easy math). You now place those 200 in a separate tank and return the original 100 to the breeding tank.
      Now your main colony can get on with the job of making more shrimp and you have a set number you can sell.
      It does mean having more than one tank, but with a bit of forward planning, that additional tank will pay for itself many times over.
      Hope that helps 🤞🏻

    @EuroGupper Рік тому +2

    Put daphnia in the shrimp tank. The daphnia population will explode and they will eventually have so much daphnia (lack of predators) that their life cycle comes to an end they die which provides protein + calcium (the daphnia shell) for your shrimp.
    Daphnia + algae + enough plantgrowth (that give dead leaves) will basically give you a selffeeding shrimp tank 😈
