  • The new one piece live action was very weird. Live Action One Piece was something I expected to hate and wasn't planning to watch at all, but I'm glad I did. According to Grandline I may have a slightly unpopular opinion...or not? Lemme know

As a non-One Piece watcher/reader... Nothing in this show is cringe, no matter how silly it is, because it truly believes in its own vision.
Just like Luffy, it's easy to believe in a dream if it believes in itself.

i think the best part of the adaptation was how u could feel the love for the series put into it. obviously oda oversaw much of the production, but it also felt like much of the cast n production team wanted the best for it as well. the casting was also exceptional and it felt as diverse as the source material, if not more, because of it.

I really enjoyed the live action as well, I was really sceptical of it, and I'm happy it didn't massively disappoint. One thing I was disappointed in was how they cut the Luffy vs Don Creig fight, this was the fight that basically made Sanji join the crew, and that didn't happen, which in turn, didn't really give Sanji the motivation to joint hr crew that he needed. But he still did. I get why they cut it, was just a bit disappointing for me

    • @seph_0056
      @seph_0056 Рік тому +7

Was it the Don krieg fight? My interpretation of Sanji getting the motivation was when Zoro fought Mihawk, him risking his life for his dream, which pushed Sanji's character. That also got me disappointed though.

    • @Rutile13
      @Rutile13 Рік тому +2

It could be a combo of both. Kreig wanted to take the Baratia, which was Zeffs dream, Luffy knew this and since Zeff fed him he was there for a friend. And Luffy doesn't stand for people getting I the way of people's dreams. That's why he fought Kreig, and he also encouraged Sanjis dream in the process.
I could easily be wrong as I haven't watched early eps in quite a while, but this is my best guess

    • @RPGNoZero

Although I understand your criticism when comes to the characters portrayals in this adaptation, I think the reason they made them more "sympathetic" or "less interesting" is mostly to the fact we only had so much time to introduce each character and get them together to form the straw hats. It was a trade off they had to do because it was only 8 episodes to introduce and develop everything, and each point you bring up in the manga counterpart works because the story has the luxury to pace itself in such a way that those moments felt earned. Sometimes rreplicating this wouldn't necessarly work in the context of the netflix series, but it's def something they can touch uppon later on. Obviously the series is not perfect by any means, but I feel like some changes were for the better.

I thing I really appreciate is that they were inspired by Tokusatsu and the Ruroni Kenshin adaptation because that stuff works in live action because it actually inspired a lot of anime, so someone who understands how that works with acting and directing being inspired by Japanese acting which would in turn inspire both Toku and anime. Now I haven’t seen the OPLA, so I could be wrong, but from the clips I’ve seen, it looks like they used it to make the animisms work in live action.

I am a fan of classic anime, films and OVAs and not these long unending franchises that seem made just to sell product, but watching this Live Action I couldn't help but fall in love with the characters, and can now understand why so many people would follow such a small crew for so long going on adventures together. Describing the characters to a friend who is a fan, just based on the Live Action, showed just how accurately they captured their personalities, and that's honestly amazing.

I definitely agree with what you said about them "whitewashing" luffy. Like its not so clear cut as "good pirates" and "bad pirates" like the show makes it seem. A good example is at the end of Skypiea when * SPOILERS they rob it of some gold without asking after saving the whole place. Like the scene in orange town when the villagers offer Luffy food and he only takes ONE!?? I feel like Luffy would never do that lol

I feel like the Live Action is more of an appetizer for someone who's heard of One Piece but isn't sure to read the manga/watch the show. It got the core themes and appeal the manga/anime but it offers itself as an intro so when a person decides to read the manga/watch the anime, they'll like receive a full-course banquet and get to enjoy it more!!!
However, though I really appreciate they included the morality of the Marines and the Warlords, I feel like that making the story more serious has caused the story to loose its own darkness--like Kuro killing his crew in front of the straw hats, Buggy's indifferent destruction of the town, Don Crieg wounding his own crew after that one guy refused to kill Sanji due to food, Arlong and his crew abusing Nami and terrorizing her town, the corruption in the Marines, etc. Perhaps in the second season they'll be able to expand more on that darkness.
I really hope the second season comes soon with quality and time.

One scene that also really made that change to the LA Luffy obvious is when Luffy frees the villagers from the chains and when he at first refuses the food they give him and then only takes a little bit with him. Actual Luffy would maybe have tossed them the keys or something along those lines but he would have never gone and freed them himself imo. Actual Luffy doesn't give a shit what villagers think of him - whether they see him as an evil villain or as a hero. Hell, he doesn't even want to be seen as a hero but even if they see him as one he doesn't give a crap about it. I also think actual Luffy would have acted the other way around with the food: He would at first take everything they offer him without thinking to much and then when he sees that they probably have very little food themselves reluctantly give most of the food back to them while sneakily stashing some of it in his pockets or something.

Luffy being a bit more heroic doesn’t seem too out of character to me since more often than not, he is the type to want to help out people in need. But I do agree it was more exaggerated here than in the anime at some points like at the end of the Buggy episode when he didn’t accept all the food the mayor gave him and just took one thing. If it was money, sure, but I don’t think canon Luffy would refuse food like that

I think the biggest problem fans have with Garp’s storyline in the live action is that it took away from much needed time with the crew, Ussop and Sanji especially which I felt that both of them got way less screen time than they needed to, and missed some great development they had in the manga/ anime in the East Blue Saga

I really didn't mind it & it added to the world building with some of the themes of the show being there are good & bad people on both sides. They are subtly preparing new comers to the show on what's to come like Marineford. I like that we are essentially following 2 sides, we have the Straw Hats with our crew & now we have Koby as the window to that side. We gotta remember that this is an adaptation & it doesn't have the luxury of 1000s of episodes/chapters to build up characters so when other Marines & characters do show up it's just not out of nowhere. Here they can have Garp/Koby be the introduction to the other Marines & World Government.

It was half kindness and half that not killing someone when they are defeated is kind of a middle finger to them in japanese culture iirc, but it was still a thing nonetheless. a lot of the bumpy bits were originally smoothed out by the spacing of their occurances in the anime/comedic effect in animation

yeah the fact the strawhats are way mroe goody goody here is pretty wild (in the original anime, i'd say only Usopp and Chopper were like the traditionally 'good guys' on the crew), but that just means people who watched the live action first are gonna be taken aback to see how much more stupid, selfish and unheroic luffy is in the anime/manga.

    Who's Kobeh? 😂
No but seriously, I believe it was necessary to change the characters' personalities not just to appeal to a wider audience but also because anime behaviours are very much cringe in real life. Part of why the exaggerated personalities work in the anime and manga is because the medium provides so much more exaggeration with the visuals. I'm talking about their mouths getting ultra wide, the dry delivery of certain jokes or the classic anime ding sound followed by a shot of the character looking to the side with their eyes greyed out. That's not possible in live action so they have to adapt to the medium. Part of why Luffy in the anime works as a true chaotic neutral/good force is because of the unrealistic setting. I truly think if they had made LA Luffy as dumb and selfish (except when it came to his friends of course) as in the anime, it would have made him very unlikable and not a fun character. Same with him not laughing at Arlong during their fight, it would have taken away a lot of the impact of the fight.

Very nice thing you picked with luffys morality and how it could've been a perfect opportunity to grow his character through Vivi in alabasta. The scene when luffy calls vivis expectations of people not dying at all in the civil war as naive. Manga has so many moments of beautiful character development in future which i really expect them to take. Especially usopp who was bland af this season.

Honestly sounds like you don’t get luffy, luffy doesn’t kill people in the manga either, he thinks of killing as unnecessary because by defeating them he crushes their dreams so there’s no need to kill them, luffy doesn’t necessarily worry much about innocent people, but he doesn’t actively try to hurt them and will help them if they’re in trouble so long as it’s not out of his way, he also doesn’t work for reward, luffy does what he wants, he usually helps people because he likes them, and for no other reason, that or because their enemy has pissed him off, nami’s betrayal actually feels more significant here, because she actively chooses to betray them instead of just leaving, and when she does just leave in the manga she’s clearly torn about it, they just build it up before it happens in live action

I don't understand people that want a re-adaptation like this to follow the original as CLOSELY as humanly possible. You shouldn't just make changes for the sake of it, but you can certainly improve on the writing, pacing and story beats that were single-handed created by a mangaka who was on a time crunch...
The original is no where near perfect, and it wouldn't necessarily fit into this different medium and format AND we already have the original, making some changes is a plus.

Luffy does NOT kill, end of story!!!
I am sick and tired of having this debate so answer me this, who has Luffy been portrayed in actually outright killing? And don't you dare say Kaido because show me the body!!
So no, Luffy is not a good person because stealing from and hitting people is not off the table. But killing has not been shown. Do not forget, shounen is technically for 14 year old boys!
    Last thing, koby not kobey!
Other than these I mostly agree with the video. Very welcome surprise this live action adaption

I appreciate the review, but it would have been nice if any of the things you were talking about were reflected in the scenes being shown on screen. Like, I know only some of the show is available to be used in public media, such as garp's dog hat or nami's orange field or Sanji's cooking scene maybe not being publicly available, but you could at least show luffy stretching his arms when you talk about the cartoonishness of his abilities. That sort of stuff is what drives people to watch your videos, instead of just reading a review somewhere.

It was Oda who had the last word I think its he who wanted Luffy to be the ray of sunshine he is in this adaptation ultimately the straw hat pirates are more vigilantes than they are pirates but they wilk probably end up becoming more like The Guardians Of The Galaxy and the crew of The Serenity as the show progresses.

You say that you don’t really like how serious Luffy is in this show but I feel like garp is a victim of the same issue. I don’t mind having more screen time with him but he feels so stripped down that I don’t really have any interest in watching this version of garp other than that I like him in the manga

I dunno, cutting out the only awesome thing about Sanji together with the entire basis of Usopp character development in order to have Garp make a fool of himself for 8 episodes just to basically go: "It was an exam to see if Luffy is a good guy and he passed" sounds as not too great of a deal. Especially considering your point about characters being too good. Garp came out as a complete nepotistic arbitrary asshole who wastes shitloads of time and effort to achieve pretty much nothing while chasing deeply personal matters. All the while, the job he SHOULD of been doing is done by a bunch 17 year olds 👌👌👌👌👌

For the characters personality smoothing, I'd say wait for S2. Oda likes introducing characters as stereotypical then flipping the script later (Brooke being the most drastic), since he's over seeing this he probably ok'd the script as is so people would grab the bait and get snagged only to find out later how truly insane each crew member is
Edit: adding that in Water Seven/ Enies Lobby there is literally a whole arc about how Luffy being too carefree is a problem. They just upped that to the Zoro v Mihawk moment cause super carefree Luffy can get grating for some people, it did for me. Lends focus on Water Seven and Enies lobby arcs in LA to focus more on Usopp, Going Merry, and Robin as well if Luffy's already learned that lesson but those 3 need the character development

9:15 Yeah, Liam is a bit disconnected from reality, and he's been so for a long while already. He will force his own personal opinion, many times wrong, onto others, by saying "many people" or in this case, "primary criticism" (he did that a lot to give entity to his own personal complains during Wano). I have not seen anyone complaining about the Garp subplot, nor have I seen Maeda saying Oda didn't want it (not saying it didn't happen, just saying I haven't seen it, and Liam has been known to fake sources in the past, to force validity into wrong and sometimes fake on purpose theories, just so they looked appealing enough for his formulaic 12 min videos)
