Steve is a remarkable teacher, I am using his instruction to apply to learning the guitar. His music translations are like no other! When I play Psalm 91 on my guitar, I think of David and how he played these tunes before us. It truly is blessing to have access to this instruction. When I strum, my spirit joins with the sounds to create a resonance all my own. Thank you Steve, for all that you share! #GodBless
Thank you so much, I have a broken and a damaged tendon on my right hand, I appreciate the time and effort you have given so that even I will be able to learn to play. God Bless you :)
I never dreamed of playing a harp before, but because of your website and videos, I am now over two months into it using a rental Harpsicle. I love it! Thank you for all your efforts.
I've watched this video and lesson 2 a few times each now, I'm currently waiting for my Fullsicle to come in the mail. I can't even contain my excitement, I've been dreaming every day for months about playing and I finally decided on the Fullsicle after lots of shopping. You are a great player and teacher, love your style and philosophy on playing the harp. Can't wait to learn more!
Absolutely Amazing Information. I am just a beginner and had a harp made for me from Josephus Harps in Duncan BC. I actually have 2 Lever Harps by Josephus. Both are Lever Harps: one is the size approx. of the one you use in the very first video, my second one is a larger stand up. I am a single mother of seven and saved for over a year each time to buy my harps. I know it is where I am supposed to be with my composing but there is no-one in my area that knows how to play one. I desperately want to play in Hospitals, Seniors Care Centres, Hospices and wherever else the Lord leads me, but I really need to become one with my instrument, and have technique that enables me to properly pluck the strings with clarity, power ,when needed, fluency and accuracy. I also do all my music by ear, I took up to grade 3 "Royal Conservatory" when I was young and hated it, all I wanted to do was sit and come up with my own songs. My whole being loved to sit down and figure out a song on the radio or in church by ear. The strings on the harp are set up like the octaves on a piano and I get that!!! I can close my eyes and find the note I want with very little problem but I need technique, understanding and practise excersises on these as I am concerned with getting into bad habits and techniques then trying to correct later something that would have made playing better to begin with The Lord has blessed me with the gift of music.Melodies, Lyrics and Composition. Now my children are grown and my Nursing career is slowing down I want to dedicate my all to my Harp and my music for the Glory of my Lord. . Thank you so very much for these lessons, I would love to donate for your time and commitment if possible but do not see a button for it? Be Blessed Carol
Such a wonderful teacher. Thank you. I am hoping to purchase a harp in the next couple of months. Been a hearts desire of mine for 20+ years. Thank you also for sharing about the Harpsicle, will be looking at that.
That is a beautiful composition and I believe that it would work well on the harp. It has nice chord progressions and the arpeggios would sound beautiful.
I like your video lesson style. It makes me feel relaxed to learn to play rather than stress over what is "right" or not. Thank you. BTW I have a caitlin cross strung. I'm going to keep watching your vids.
thank you so much for the positive feed back it is appreciated!! thats awesome.. i will definitely watch and learn from you as a music teacher once i get the harp!!! looking forward to learning it :)
Hey Steve! I viewed your this video about 6 months ago because of my interest in learning and as of now i'm waiting on shipping for my harpsicle to arrive in a few days. I'm a fellow musician and have learned a fair amount of instruments and am very excited to start applying all of the videos i have watched of yours. Thank you for keeping me motivated to save for one just by listening to you play. Never forget you're inspiring people Steve!
Thank you for your info. I am interested in learning harp (at 50) and purchasing a harp. I will come back to your information on here as time permits. I would love to play for seniors and at church....many blessings.
Thank you. I really enjoy your style of teaching. I tried to follow the other people teaching in other videos and didn't relate to them as much as I did to you. You seem easy going in your approach and very talented as well. Thanks again! I just got a 22 string (31"tall) pixie harp. I'm learning from you and enjoying it. I just wish my harp had strap hooks like yours does bc it's bulky and awkward to hold.
Thanks Claudia, Please help me by sharing it with others - my web site is also available with a lot more information. See the video link for the address. Blessings
I learned to play harp on the left shoulder even though im right handed. I have come a long way but need to put more time into it. I did not deliberate a plan to play left shoulder but im more comfortable playing with left hand on trebles and right hand bass. Have you encountered other people like me?
Hi I am thankful you take the time to answer things for people. I have a problem...When I play at home I play very well but when I play in public I make mistakes and hold back on things I have accomplished at home. Can you give me some advice? Thanks
Hi Ron - I had much the same problem for many years until I realized it was really a pride issue. I didn't want people to hear me make a mistake. I finally realized that 90% of the people couldn't tell I made a mistake and the others didn't really care, after all, they weren't up there playing. Another thing that helped me was to go to nursing homes and hospitals and play for the people in bed. They appreciate anything they can get and it really helped me settle down about playing for other people. And finally, if your having fun and enjoying the music, who cares what anyone else thinks - just play for your own enjoyment and amazement! If your listeners happen to enjoy it - all the better. Hope that helps. Blessings - Steve
I remember in grade school learning EGBDF " Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge " And the FACE. Odd how we remember things from many years back sometimes. When needed I guess? Should help me now. I have a harp but cannot seem to play it so hope to' learn' and just got a 'key board' and am catching on and have the idea of the Chords, anyway , Only two days.
Hi thanks a lot for your feedback. I will take your advice and do these things. I have made an arrangement of "over the rainbow" but I have been afraid to play it because it is fancy similar to a concert harp style of playing. It don't have sharp levers and there is a c sharp note I cant play when I play this song, so I play it the same as the first run. I will try it publically soon. I have played for rest homes before and I need to do this again. It did make them very happy. I made my harp and got 2 small limerick styles on the way. I do my own alternations on them because of not much shop tools. They still turn out pretty. The Robinsons "Irish Harp I made is made of red oak(pillar and neck) the sound box is of yellow poplar and the sound board is aircraft birch 1/8th thick. I laminated two 3/4th boards for the neck an pedestal. This harp turned out to be a beautiful sounding instrument and very resonate. The sound box poplar wood is 1/2th inches thick. Most builders don't use oak but I have found out that oak worked strong especially laminated like I did.
Your harps sound great - I would like to hear the Robinson - any chance of posting your arrangement on UA-cam? I am including a link to some sharping levers: www.robinsonsharpshop.com/hardware.html These are the levers that I have on my Harpsicle that I am doing the lessons with. They only cost $5 apiece and are quite good quality - made of brass and with good sound quality. You could start out by putting one on each C string and then branch out from there. They give you good instructions for installation and since you have built a harp you should have no problems. Hope all goes well - Blessings - Steve
Do not mean to write so much. But guess newborn babies love hearing the harp and it is very soothing to them and relaxes the little ones!? I do healing touch in the adult home and guess the harp would be good too?
theres a 19 string ems harp im interested in buying, but if this one is lower cost, id definitely be interested in buying it, especially because its american made. the thing i like about harps being a piano player is that one they require two hands, second, they are almost entirely made up of arpeggio songs (which i love to write with) so i can transition some songs i wrote on piano to harp and actually take it with me when i play :)
I have a "tuner" but think it may not be so good? I have to play a note and the little thing I use, is to turn on a right light in middle if I have it right. Well just not sure? I may need to buy another kind? My harp does not have the levers. Have an antique autoharp, played with a little gadget ,and it is like a hammer. You are to gently hit the strings with it.
I want to learn how to play the harp but I live no where near anyone that teaches it I don't have a harp but do you think it's possible to teach myself with these videos?
Thank you for the great video! You are a good teacher and you gave me a lot of information. I really want to learn how to play a lever harp. I am an absolute beginner and a bit confused by some conflicting impressions, though. I read that when all the levers are down, E, A, and B are flat, and you have to lift those ones in order to have all naturals. That's right, isn't it? Maybe I'm confused because a harp with no levers, like the Harpsicle, is different because it has all natural notes as is? Whereas the lever harp's "resting state" with the levers down has the E, A and B flat and the rest of the notes natural. Is that correct? I'd appreciate it so much if you could confirm this...
This is true - if you have full levers as well as a pedal harp has the E, A, and B tuned to the b and then the lever is raised for the natural. It really depends on what harp you have and how many levers you have. If there are no levers, like the basic harpsicle, then the strings are tuned to the natural notes, essentially the white keys on the keyboard. I have installed some sharping levers on my harpsicle so I tune according to the levers I have. I tune to the Bb open string and then sharp it up to the natural. I also have the C for a sharp and the F for a sharp so that gives me the keys of C maj, F maj, D maj, and G maj. This is enough spread to go with most singing and instrument ranges. There are some songs I can't play, but it is a small number and usually they can be transposed to one of the keys I have. Don't be discouraged. It took me several years before I got comfortable with transposing to different keys. Keep up the good work!
Our family moved back to the States - I never was certified - Senior centers for sure will let you in and depending on hospital policy there are still ways you can make a difference. Blessings 🙌
@@peregrinnatti Thank You so much for the encouragement. The certifications include a lot of New Age Meditation teaching which I wish to avoid. Apparently you also have to sign something stating that you won't share the gospel when you play at a hospital bed at the end of a certification so that makes me wonder if I really need it 😄
I have rented a 22 string harp and am teaching myself to play it via UA-cam. I'm struggling with the basic problem of how to hold the harp. It slides off my lap, and it doesn't have anywhere to attach a strap to. Is there a simple solution for me?
Hi, I'm thinking in buying a harp and I would like to ask you please if you can write down the name of the harp and from which webside you can find it out. Congratulations for your fantastic videos.
Peregrinatti! What kind of harpsicle is better to begin with? I was thinking about the basic harpsicle since it is not that expensive. The fullsicle might be too complicated and expensive...and I fear that I could drop playing this instrument (I have no experience playing any). Thank you so much for your videos :)
The basic Harpsicle has no levers so you usually tune in the key of C. As for learning the harp this is fine. If you start to play with other people and their instruments sometimes you will need to go to a different key. That's what the levers do. The basic model doesn't have bridge pins either which you would need if you wanted to add levers later. If you buy the next model up, the Sharpsicle, it has bridge pins and 2 levers per octave so you can add levers as you want. The price is $659 + $65 shipping. This is a Harpsicle - I can order for you. Call me 707-373-0976 or email: steve@ calmingharp.com
Are the levers necessary? I’m new to harp stuff and I want to learn how to play for the Lord.
The Levers allow you to play in different keys so you can match a vocal range or play with other instruments
Can you just tune it to the key you're in, example key of G just raise the F to F#?
Different harps have different number of strings, so how can I tell where middle C on say like a 38 string harp??
First of all, the red strings are designed to be tuned to the C notes. All red strings are C at different octaves. The middle C is usually the 2nd red string away from the shortest string, but it depends on how the harp is designed. On some it could be the 3rd. If you have a key board or piano, if you play middle C and then find the red string that sounds the same, that is probably the easiest method. Hope that helps!
What you called the double strung is actually considered a cross strung. Double strung has no crossing of the strings. See the Story End Brittany.
