Edit: About the same price as a Tullamore Dew, which is also a nice whiskey for a tight budget. --- With whisky, as with wine, if you go from the cheapest stuff to something slightly more expensive, you will get an enormous amount of quality for the extra money spent. The complexity of the flavour will quickly feel overpowering, and totally out of place. Get some easy going rhum instead. Or, even better, learn to appreciate the good things in life, such as buttery undertones, and being a pretentious asshole.

I actually tried his smelling the whiskey technique before drinking and it totally killed my urge to drink whiskey probably because the whiskey was cheap and I smelled it directly from the bottle.
There is a method in the madness, he's swirling it to coat the glass and remove any dust particles or bad odors in the glass with the swirl. So his actual pour of whiskey should be perfect.
My brother just sent me a nice MacAllan 12 year for Christmas. With the exception of throwing out the first pour, I did exactly this. My wife is not pleased.🤣

My Grandfather taught me that only a select few people in this world can enjoy Scotch the correct way! The correct way to enjoy a Scotch, is with a splash of the cold Spring water it was borne of. Simply put, no-one but the distiller and employees have this privilege. The next best alternative, obviously is a splash of cold bottled Spring water. Grandaddy advises his favorite alternative is to use a small block of ice, I will agree to bringing the proof down to about 35.
In the first instance, he is seasoning the glass. It basically just kills off any odors that you might get from a glass that's been stored too long in a cupboard. If you're into wine it's a great idea to do before tasting a top notch wine. There's some scientific shit about how alcohol with a similar percentage and ph level blah blah blah cleans the glass and allows you to taste uninterrupted. Unfortunately, it's one of those things that actually works, any dust build up is cleaned by the alcohol and by throwing it out you basically are tasting from a sterile glass. You end up looking like a massive twat, and everybody who doesn't copy you will make fun of you, but hey, fuck them, you have a tasty whiskey and they have some dusty bullshit with a slight tinge of mold from the cupboard it was stored in.
