@@danepaintrue but it’s a metaphor for the police force. The fact that so many cops (bad apples) are falling/growing on a tree means that something is wrong with the tree or in this case how these bad apples are protected in the police force. Not every police officer is bad, just like how not every tree will have rotten fruit.

I'm just saying, the issue with the police isn't "a few bad cops" it's a far more fundamental issue. However, the call to 'abolish', or massively defund, the police is not based on any tangible reality. If we do nothing to improve and/or invest in social programs to massively reduce violence, crime rates will simply increase. Also, even in countries with extremely humane criminal justice systems and very low crime rates, a police force is still needed (as it has always been).

The purpose of the police, from the very beginning, has been to serve the interests of capitalism by controlling the poor and enforcing the capitalists' property rights. Sure, the police are necessary for capitalism to function, but they are not necessary by any means for society to function.
The idea that the police are necessary to maintain civil society is not an idea with any empirical or historical merit. There are plenty of places in the world even today that have no formal police force.

I see you are well intentioned and on track, but you fundamentally misunderstand the meaning of the slogan. It derives specifically out of longstanding injustice of the state against black folk. Abolish THE police, has never meant no policing or system to enforce Justice. It is specifically in reference to THIS system. I hope you will acknowledge how inaccurate your initial characterization is, because it is kind of spreading misinformation.

Personally, I think abolishing the police probably wouldn't really do anything, but defunding them would. The departments don't need all of the equipment that they have, and getting rid of the funding for that stuff and puting it into more training and wellness checks would be better.

I definitely agree with "defund the police" when it comes to frivolous expenses/equipment, but what people don't seem to realize is that training police costs... money. So, defunding the police would actually run counter to that goal. But I guess that "defund the police except for a fund for increased training" isn't exactly as pithy.

    • @aqueous5099

@@ellag3265 the only reason people say defund or abolish is with respect to a corrupt institution that will not reform. You don’t need training not to be racist or abusive. Look at New York, they seem to be doing real well at defunding the police as a slow road to abolishment. I'm sure its a perfect example of how it would turn out... At least the people in charge of 'relocation of others goods' seem real happy
Edit due to comments being deleted within seconds of posting (odd, are you being manipulated viewers?)
Nypd has gained funds... After losing funds in 2020-21. They are using that to make up for losses. They have also lost over 2000 officers since then since due to the debt they are paying about 25% of what other regional offices are paying, so they are bleeding uniformed officers due to overwork (up to 60 hours overtime) and underpay. Throwing money at the problem after you caused it by ripping it away is like bandaging an abscessed wound. Not gonna save anything
And as well look at history-lets destroy the ruling body we dislike! Oh no, something worse took over/the people who promised to rule without corruption are worse! Now its a dictatorship, if only we had examples that we could have learned from!

Are they making more now? Yes.
But imagine your boss dropped your pay from 5.30 to 4.60
Now during that year you miss some rent and payments. You are in debt.
You get a pay increase, even beyond your old pay!
      It goes into the debt.
In a few years we may see an improvment, but for now they have lost over 2000 uniformed officers(not document filers, the guys who come when you call) since those budget cuts. And officers keep transfering out because they need to work upto 60hours overtime each week and are being paid 25% of what other regional officers are paid (due to lasting budget cut effects) recently there are proposals to increase but there are still recruitment issues from cancelled nypd classes.

Kind of knocking down a straw man argument. The only side really worried about extremists are the ones calling to abolish the police (which in itself is an extreme statement). Most people in support of the police just don't want crime to run rampant. Just looking at NYC will show you what happens when theft is excused, forcing many businesses to leave.
It's also kind of a giant statement to say defund the police considering how many types of police there are and how much the vary state to state or town to town. If you were talking about federal forces like the fbi, cia, and atf im sure lots of people would agree with the sentiment. But if it's state police that you want to abolish then you are gonna put more work on the much lesser trained local pd. If it's local pd then sure, ig individual towns could do that but im not gonna call to defund my local pd when a lot of people around town including me know them by name.
I guess my solution would be to try to decrease poverty with a freer market approach allowing people to actually raise their standard of living.

Except the good cops either do fuck all about the bad ones, or are punished when they step forward by their supervisors. The fact so many departments give cover for bad cops or just cycle the bad ones to a new department when the PR is bad kind of shows the rot in the system.
