Disney just released and DELETED the theme song for their new cartoon Primos, after universal negativity…
considering how Disney doesn't like any controversy even in the slightest (see banned Bluey episodes) I think this show is gonna be canned pretty damn fast.

Funniest part of the whole VA situation is that she could’ve literally left the whole thing with her hands clean. She could’ve said something like “Hey guys I don’t speak spanish all of the time so I apologize for not realizing about my mistake before the release of the trailer”, and while she might still have faced some minor backlash later she’d have mostly been forgiven or ignored. But nahhhh she just had to victimize herself and call us latinos (mind you, the culture THEY are trying to represent “respectfully”) the racist ones for complaining about their incompetence lol.
While also saying that Spanish is colonizer language
As if the language she's speaking isn't from a colonizer...
She was just so damned smug about it too
Very ironic of her to call Spanish a colonizer language in English
The Spaniards actually did have friendly relations with some of the natives (particularly the ones that helped with the Aztecs), while the British killed everyone, even the ones who dared help them
And it's not just in the US, go look at every place where they established themselves and what happened to the natives
@@rushink There were British (and later, Americans) who were nice with the natives, its just that the ones who WEREN'T left permanent consequences. The Spaniards, I believe, were kinder overall.
People should take into account how mixed modern populations are when talking about colonizers, because their jabs just sound like ancestral guilt rather than anything profound or progressive. None of us are in any way responsible, nor did we experience settlers messing with us. Let it go, first contact was 531 years ago.
@@ArchSchizo I understand that, and I'm not blaming any living person for that, simply stating a historical fact that relates to the historical fact she said.
Were any of us, the VA or me, in any way personally, directly affected by any of the two groups? No
Was the commentary ironic, specially given the historical context of both languages around the world? Yes, and I simply stated that
Bro imagine if they made an American version of this show. And the names of the characters would be cheeseburger and they would live in 9/11 heights 💀💀

The worst thing to come out of this outrage is the VA’s (the person Mark showed towards the end) response to this whole situation and literally saying that Spanish is a language forced onto Latinos by colonizers (implying that it’s not their own language). As if you couldn’t insult your main demographic any further.
As if most people in South America weren't off Spanish descent
Okay I think I gotta step in here, she’s not wrong in that historically Spanish, or Español, was a language created by those who colonized the indigenous peoples of South America which of whom had their own languages. But in a similar fashion as how English is still used in the Americas, it has stayed around due to ease of use in communication with global partners and other cultures. Historically this is also a common practice that humanity has carried since it’s inception of language.
@@thezombiefan777 You're not wrong, but the issue isn't that she was wrong in that bit of history, but that she decided to bring it up in her response to people criticizing the show. *That's* what set people off.
That’s ignoring the creoles
@@staringcorgi6475 Them too
I feel like most of the problems would’ve been glossed over if it wasn’t for the aforementioned production staff response
That main VA response in particular was horrible…

Show has been put "on hold" for re-tooling
Ladies and gentlemen, we got em
As a Peruvian, I just want to say they really fucked up with how they managed that controversy, that actress's voice shouldn't have said that thing about the language of colonizers, and seeing how the show's creators just said that the "oie primos" and other words that are mispronounced in Spanish are a common joke in the show, just makes think why couldn't they said that from the beginning it was easier and this controversy never happens or at least it doesn't go this bad.
The VA was being an idiot but a lot of guys are jumping the gun, like the Cuca stuff (is just a name here in Mexico).
Probably because "it's a joke" is actually often just code for "we messed up but don't want to admit it so we'll pretend it was intentional".
@@RafaelRB11 thats important tho, here in chile we had a controversy because a chinese company was named pico
@@RafaelRB11Dick is also just a name but you won't see any characters names Mr. Dick N. Balls

Penn zero deserves the marking as underrated
This? It definetly deserves to be forgotten
Honestly, the way the VA responded was more of a middle finger.

If i were the creator of a show and a voice actor made a TikTok like that without running it by me first I'm not kidding I would fire them that second.
Just exceedingly unprofessional and tone deaf, and has created a huge pr nightmare.
@Jules-bo7fl I'm not sure how much power a creator has to fire an actor, that's often the publishing company or show runners.

Cant wait to see Was Oye Primos any good which will be from 20 to 1 1/2 only to say it was ok
And all the videos are called "Primos is... Okay"
These shows exist because internet loves negative things than positives.
When the behind the scenes controversy is more entertaining than the actual show
The "oigan" in text to speech caught me off guard, thanks for that!
Can confirm it was forgotten in a week
Not to mention the names of the characters being inappropriate once you realise what they mean 😭
As a Latino, I actually spat my drink out when I heard some of the names.
Nacho is fine, it can be a nickname for Ignacio, Gordita could be offensive as it means fat, but it could also be given as a nickname for someone and I get cuquita means the women’s private part in some countries, many Latin American countries wouldn’t find it innapropiate
I think there's one way to sum it up best with a Joe Swanson quote "Who was the target audience? Who was this made for, a Mexican who never met a Mexican?"
It's for Mexican-American living in LA (you can see the Hollywood sign in the opening) by Mexican-Americans.
If that was made clearer this would be a non-issue, even Earthquake Heights being a California self-own thing, instead of spitting of the face of Mexicans and Chileans.
Actually, the creator and executive producer, Natasha Kline, is Mexican-American.
Now with Owl House gone, there’s nothing that would bring me back to Disney Channel.

As a Mexican, this is pretty stereotypical, but I’ve seen more offensive things then this. And this is why marketing and HR departments exist. It’s one thing if you’re a small creator receiving backlash. It’s expected that you’re either going to ignore things or respond on your own. But when you’re under the corporate Disney bubble, you absolutely have to direct your public statements through the company to be vetted.
It was indeed forgotten about in a week
Love how we lost a full season 3 of the owl house for this….
Sinful
One of the little girl's names is "Cookita." It sounds weirdly similar to "cuquita" which means "little vagina." Soooo.... yeah. Its kinda like how Studio Ghibli almost had Castle In The Sky titled "Laputa" but the Spanish community roasted them cause it means "the bitch" in Spanish, so they changed it. But even they have a better excuse cause they're Japanese. THE CREATOR OF PRIMOS IS SPANISH
They should have accepted Laputa. But i guess back then they didn't knew the value of NOT translating stuff unnecessarily
She's not Spanish, but an American (USA) with Hispanic ancestry.
The original name is Laputa. It was named like that with all intentions of offence lol
@@JRVChama Hispanic American then?
Bruh when I heard what they named that girl I was just so baffled. The response from the VA was racist and rude enough but cookita and gordita??? Like what in your right mind would make you think ANY Latino would like this show?
RebelTaxi did a video talking about the outrage, as well as throwing his hat into the ring regarding language (well, more so his parents). He did also point out that the show takes place in LA, California (you can see part of the Hollywood sign in the intro), a place that has a large Mexican population and is known for its frequent earthquakes.
I also did some digging and found that Natasha Kline, the creator of Primos, is Mexican-American. And the term "oye primos" in the intro was done on purpose because Tater (the main character) doesn't speak Spanish. Basically, they have her using the wrong phrase on purpose to show how out-of-touch she is. I suppose it can best be compared to Rugrats, in a sense.
If their goal was to make Tater's Spanish bad on purpose, a very easy way to convey that would be to have someone correct her during the theme song. It wouldn't be too difficult to squeeze in. The way they insulted their audience after the fact only made them look incompetent
@@Commenter839 They didn't insult their audience. The VA was solely acting on her own accord.
@@SaiyanGamer95 Still though, the VAs in shows, particularly the main VAs like in this case, don't just represent themselves when they're talking on the show's behalf. She was representing the brand.
If a prominent employee of any brand publicly does something unprofessional, it makes the whole company look bad by extension.
If she had said that, instead of calling the one who corrected her a Nazi and not putting her arrogant response on the people who criticized her, this wouldn't have happened.
As a Mexican who grew up in LA, none of this offends me. And the fact that the MC was a no sabo kid…man, people really messed this up for everyone
Actually the setting is based on LA, California, not Mexico.
But California also is prone to earthquakes so the argument is still valid.
I think the critisicim of the grammer would've slowly died out since spanish is a language that is different based on the area it's spoken in, but the response the staff gave only fueled the flames and I am positive this will make Disney want to shut down the show to prevent more controversy on their end
This show could've avoided the controversy by saying how this representation Chicano culture and that the main character was using the incorrect grammar because she's using broken Spanish as English is her primary language. A lot of Chicanos couldn't speak Spanish fluently due to many reasons from parents not teaching them out of fear of making them outsiders in the US, the American education system not including Spanish as a required language to learn along with English, or in my case, mostly talking to other English speakers while having rare occasions to talk to Spanish speakers.
If they stated that this show was for Mexican immigrants where kids couldn't fit in completely with Mexican culture nor American culture, then the backlash wouldn't be that severe especially since this is base off of the creator's childhood in LA, not Mexico. But of course this smug ass VA completely ruin any chance to help this show and possibly any chance to get a second season.
"Spanish is a language that is different based on the area its spoken"
Yes, but at most it's just pronunciation or dialectical slang, nobody that i know of in my place or anywhere mixed up a singular verb with a plural noun.
@@javieralejandrotrianapaz6343 Well that is because she is born in an English speaking language, and is essentially speaking broken Spanish. If you live in a Spanish speaking country, then of course everyone would one that the nouns, verbs, and adjective have a agree with each other, but a lot of immigrants kids who only learn English and speak English everyday while Spanish is very rarely used, then it's likely that she won't know the rules of Spanish despite coming from a Mexican family, more so if her mom is the only one to speak Spanish
Also most kids will learn to speak Spanish but not read nor write it. I met a lot of little kids only speaking Spanish. Their parents say the can English in school.

From the clips I saw Luz was not good representation, but I am not Dominican. As a Mexican American, I think Soos was fun, I got the jokes because I did grow up in a Mexican household, first generation. Same with Amphibia, while not having family from Thailand, I still understood being between two communities, the American and the “motherland “ community. In The Owl House, the mother is wearing one of those wired sexuality flags on her uniform. Believe me if she was first gen, that would most likely not happen.
