  • Our Traffic Modelling video shows how the scheme to transform the road layout of Broad Street, March, dramatically improves travel times and ensures a consistent flow of traffic through the town - easing congestion and reducing pollution.
The videos were based on real data collected over a period of days and represent an average day - not school holidays, days with planned closures or days that works were taking place. The models outline peak times for the road network, morning and evening.
Both models use the same amount of traffic, placed into the system at the same time. Some interesting items to watch for which illustrate the benefits are:
    • Pedestrian zebra crossings
    • Buses and HGVs
    • Cars turning into Grays Lane
    • Cars turning into Broad Street from the mini roundabout
    • How often there is standing traffic
    • How often there is congestion
The scheme to change the road layout of Broad Street is being delivered by Cambridgeshire County Council with funding from the county’s March Area Transport Study (£4.2million), the March Future High Streets Fund programme (£3.6million) and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority’s Market Towns Fund (£2million).

The video presentation of future traffic does not show any pedestrians crossing the crossings either in Broad Street, Dartford Road or Station Road and the resulting hesitation of the traffic. Neither does it show any HGVs travelling along Dartford Road into Station Road. It would be interesting to actually know when the traffic survey was done, assuming there was one.
Personally I think this is a case of 'we have some money, we must spend it' without consulting the residents of March at a reasonable time.

Where are all the parked cars, the people dodging the moving traffic, the cars struggling to get out of Nene Parade and the view further back at the reduced Market Place with it's own bottleneck of traffic?

The problem with empty shops in March is not the traffic flow it's the use of Amazon and other Internet based retailers taking trade away from shops. When Woolworths closed it took the heart out of the town. If John Lewis moves in then maybe March has a chance.

That's great, but you can't control that. A Town centre for shops is about people, and shouldn't be used as the main car infrastructure flow, March's pavements are tiny along the street with multiple car lanes.
If more people walk about town because it's actually a nice place to be instead of the awful state it was in before, then more shops may appear. People have been seeing March slowly lose life before this project yet have the foolish conclusion that the project is to blame.
Mark my words, in 5 years or so afterwards, people who were outspoken about it won't want to just pave through the area with a big road because they'll realise how much nicer the Town has become.
      March NIMBY's, get a grip.

I can't actually see how constricting the Flow of traffic will improve the traffic flow. The town needs another bridge over the river to divert traffic around and away from the town centre. Would also like to see what the modelling is like when the A141 is closed due to an accident or road works! I think the current plan is floored. Don't get me wrong it would improve the town centre however without another bridge over the river it will kill the town.

It will never work what happens when there is a accident on bypass. Need another bypass for town. Waste of money

But your plan shows 3 zebra crossings and yet the modelling of traffic flow doesn't take this into account at all so is completely unrealistic

Finally, a plan to make the town center more present and open up the street to people outside cars!

Absolute piffle. Far more traffic will be using Station road giving them priority over those using Broad Street.
