    Fantastic video! I felt I was right there with you on your hunt. The agates you sent sure are beautiful, I feel guilty in receiving them. I might polish a couple of them but the others should be left alone in their natural state. Thanks.

    I think that rock that with the feldspar is amygdaloidal basalt. The copper mine tailings piles in the Keweenaw peninsula are filled with that sort of stuff. I think the orange spots are feldspar like you said. The agate that you thought might be a sagenite might actually be a tube agate. I'm not an agate expert, but I think those little holes are tubes.
    I've thought about buying one of those commercial rock scoops many times, but I never have. I'm worried that it would be heavier than my PVC scoop. I tend to stay out for about five hours and I don't want to be weighted down any more than necessary. I know they're aluminum, but that's still heavier than plastic. I need to get my hands on one sometime and get a feel for it. How did the shape of the end work for picking a single rock out of the lake? My spoon comes to one point and does a decent job. I'm not sure if the shape of yours would be even better.

    • @AgateDad
      @AgateDad  4 роки тому +4

      The scoop is actually very light, I never thought once that it was "weighing" me down, so maybe try it out! And the end is good, it could use a few more holes in the scoop, that's the only negative thing I could say about it.

    Great video getting out in the cold! As far as that first mysterious rock that you cannot figure out it's really looks like prehnite in basalt with a nice square vug. Look closely inside of the vugs sometimes there is specks of copper or silver or even copper or silver wires. We find lots of these in copper country at mines and beaches.

    I'm a flyfisherMann and I have chest waders so those waves that can surprise you and go over the hip waders don't. I'm 66 now so I don't wade in the water at all. HaHa I am blessed to live on the Bay of Fundy and the tides go out so no wading required. Although the scoop you have would work great in creeks. I've used sticks but that's hard and frustrating.

    • @AgateDad
      @AgateDad  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah I pay care attention to waves and how hard or soft the ground I'm stand on is, earlier today I was put and a slight ridge of sand started giving out on me and I almost dunked a leg. Much better to have only one leg go down then both! The scoop works really great, sunny and windless days are best for seeing through the water though!

    Oh man. I have to get to Michigan for a vacation. Between you and Michigan Rocks, your killing me. Such gorgeous specimens. Especially that last one. And your water is so crystal clear so you can see the rocks underwater. All I find in central Iowa is limestone, limestone and more limestone. Maybe a little sandstone, some quartz and iron pyrite but nothing as beautiful as the stuff Michigan Rocks throws back. It almost makes me cry at times. Our water any where around here is all muddy and silty too so you can only see what is on the bank and those are not always clean enough to tell what they are. I have been a rock hound since I was 2 years old and I am 52 now so I have a few (hundred maybe thousand) rocks from many different areas but I don't think I have been anywhere that has so many beautiful specimens in such a small area.

      There is a lot of beauty in Michigan, I would like to try there myself someday! With winter freezing everything over, Minnesotas north shore beaches of lake superior are where I spend my time. I would like to try out Wisconsins south shore to see how it would turn out in winter.

    Hey Taylor, that smaller agate with the super tight bands is very cool. I have a couple of marbles made from that kind of material and the bands, being so tight, cause a kind of chatoyancy in the stone when you shine a flashlight on it or take it out in the sunlight. That stone you found looks like it would do the same thing if polished with a curved surface (as opposed to a flat saw cut).

    • @AgateDad
      @AgateDad  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks! And that's very neat, I've seen people who find beach glass marbles on the beach, that would be pretty neat. And that would be fun to give it a curved polish! Add it to the jar lol

    If you wear chest waders just don't go in past just above your waste, you probably wont be able to see in the water that good that deep anyways but as long as you can still stand up you wont ever drown. Once your waders fill up you can stand up but it wont pull you down. This is only if you slip and go under though. If you do fall in deeper water just keep your feet up and use the air trapped in your waders from your wading belt to float you. Ive never heard of anyone dying from wearing waders. Good stuff Dad

      Oh man I was downstairs last night and saw it next to another piece of gear I'm going to be using later on and I thought "CRAP". Would have loved to use it, I'm going to try to get out this week and I'm going to be putting the straw in there and trying it out, seems simple enough to use!
