@@VeroFerrer2948 yeah it was surprisingly fast. And that’s the confusing part they didn’t charge me. I know I payed for my fictitious business name and I’m working on getting my resellers permit since I made the mistake of thinking the sellers and resellers were the same.

If we get a seller's permit but wind up not selling anything outside a 3rd party platform (like Amazon or Etsy), will that be a problem come tax time? Thanks Ginny, the guidance is very appreciated. Pulling the trigger on starting a business (especially in California) is a bit scary. It also helps having this knowledge in advance before consulting a CPA pre - launch of doing the DBA. (Quarter taxes, listings, etc) Most of my vendors are here in California, and I plan on moving out of state, but still working with them. My CPA is going to hate me! ;)

I know that they are the ones responsible for collecting sales tax on the sellers behalf and then i would collect the document and then give to my CPA for taxes. A federal EIN is only required as a sole proprietor if you have employees or have another business atructure but can be obtained if you desire to use it instead of your social security number. An SEin is a state employer id number required for payroll taxes.

This would be found on your completed sellers permit it is your account number with the CDTFA

Yes, shopify doesnt conduct sales and take sales tax for you.

Hi Ginny, If I have a DBA and I sell on shopify. What do I input for the number section? My SSN?
You’d need a EIN (employer identification number) from the IRS website, it’s easy and free!
