Thanks for posting this solution, as I was unaware that there was any interest in the old DV tape formats nowadays! I still have a pristine VX2100 from back in the day, which sadly hasn't seen any activity since the demise of firewire connectivity into my laptop, and all the subsequent camera upgrades I've done over the years. I will be digging it out of the cupboard now, and looking into all the available recording options. One thing that I might look at after your comments, is using my Tascam DR10sg mic, or my Saramonic MixMic SR-H5M for the audio capture, and use the powerplay recording for syncing in post. Maybe there's still life in the old girl yet! :)

for the 3.5mm audiojack not pushing in completely, it could be that either the cable or the unit have a different pin-order and it might be worth juggling them around. If all else fails, a normal audio cable from 3.5 to 2x RCA should do the trick as well
I’ve been filming with a ccd vx1e and have been first looking at circumnavigating using the np77 batteries and then onto tape less. So thank you for posting this. Also nice seeing some classic Boardroom footage!
Following on from this I’ve finally got my Vx1E np77 batteryless and tapeless. It’s a little on the bulky and ugly side but I don’t have to worry about battery’s anymore.
@@NEONAIRSHIP So for my day job I use fairly standard 12v dc li-ion batteries from eBay. My problem with original nicam batteries is theyre 20+ years old and barely hold a charge. So hacked a charger and old battery to house a dc input and buck regulator to take the voltage down to 6v. The batteries aren’t smart so this work fine. Using a Ezcap dvr which records in 1080. Have found using an upscaler greatly improves the quality. So have this on my rig aswell. I’m just putting the finishing touches to it and will make my own demonstration video along with captured Broom footage!
Inspired me to try my VX1000E with my ARCHOS AV 700 Mobile DVR. Both have S-Video so that's what I used. The ARCHOS records AVI files with MPEG-4 25 fps video at 512 X 384. Nice result, but maybe not so good for fast action.
The thing that will always stop me from trying this is the fact it's adding more compression, compared to importing it direct with no compression (well, no more compression then DV already has!)
Just means this way is slightly lower quality than using a firewire to capture, and it's already standard def so them pixels are at a premium. IMO it's good enough tho, you can see the difference in the comparison I did - I don't think anyone could tell once uploaded

Quick question, if your camera cannot record onto tapes anymore, will it be able to record to this? Does the camera just need to be able to output signal to a monitor?

do you ever wonder about the quality loss not using the firewire out with this setup? from what I understand analog video out is quite a substantial drop in quality because of the redundant digital to analog conversion that has to happen for these cameras to output in analog out, guess there's a compromise you may have to make for the convenience of this setup
he showed the quality loss and compared to the other fpv dvr it was so marginal that firewire is only good if you already own the equipment as it costs a fortune nowadays secondhand
Question about framerates - what is the native framerate of one of these old cameras? I was always under the impression that since they use tape (25fps/29.97fps), that is what they film at, but then all these tapeless DVRs record at 60fps...? Not sure how that plays nice with old cameras, or with, say, converting VHS to digital. I'd appreciate any advice anyone might have!
They're interlaced so it's 60i in NTSC/50i in PAL - you're right in that not all the data is used, but the cheaper DVRs skip frames which means slow mo looks jank

@@NEONAIRSHIP Ah! I've found the solution to the problem. The manufacturer changed the layout of the 3.5mm jack and swapped the video line with the ground line. Now I'm getting a clean picture. Thanks for the tutorial!
@@cruzarnett6408 I'm using two 3.5mm to AV (Red yellow white), one with male AV cables, one with female AV cables. I matched the white to white, Red to Yellow, and Yellow to Red cables together, and it reads perfectly clean now (I have some example footage on my channel)

I have a FXT DVR and it does exactly the same and find it sketchy that it won't record properly, especially when it comes to skateboarding... What do you think about using a standalone capture like clearclick with an external power? It seems like it would be easier to set up and maybe just as effective. I'm guessing there's a glaringly obvious reason I'm missing that people, yourself included, aren't already going that route. Thanks for all the info!!!

Hey man, yeah I think I know what you mean - it's a frame rate thing, try a few different timeline settings to get one that matches up and that will get rid of the jittering

Well I keep my AX100 4k which is starting to be almost collectible too True that for UA-cam broadcasting and viewing as many do on a 6" smartphone it is sufficient quality... On my 70" 4k TV it must be a disaster
Wut? You don't seem to get how any of it works, 4k is 4k is 4k. Even 100m wide 4k. AX100 is absolutely not collectible, neither is a VX1000 for that matter, but a VX1000 is "vintage", ie old, the AX100 will be in about 10-15yrs or so, maybe? The VX1000 and GL2 etc are "cool" because they were being used by a lot of "famous" skate video makers a long time ago, that's it. No other reason. I've shot short movies on a GL2, I currently own the "big brother" of it, Canon XHA1, and it's not really anything special.

hey! mine came in today and i'm having trouble positioning the 3.5mm jack into the powerplay so that it 1. gets a non-glitchy video signal and 2. records audio. so far, i have to fidget with it to get one or the other. any tips?
Hey, I'm gonna make a video about this soon but it seems the the red and yellow AV signals are in the wrong order on the DVR. So you can either use some adapters to switch em or just plug into the other ports depending on your camera
OK in that case the easiest way is to get 2x 3.5mm to AV cables - one with female connectors and one with male. Then you can swap em round until its correct
Ah yeah I remember seeing that actually, I think it was out of stock at the time. Personally I like having the screen for reviewing clips but fxt can do that with a phone I think - might be a good option

NEON AIRSHIP hey man just a quick one, i bought one and it’s recording fine with my vx2000 but it’s only recording a static sound for the audio, do you have any idea as to why?
It looks fine through the actual camera and noticeably dark on the power play. I thought it was just the display but the footage actually did look like what when I captured.

I'm not sure but I think it might be the layout of the 3.5mm jack? TRS vs TRRS kinda thing. Different cable could potentially solve it

I think it only matters if its a HD timeline, if you make a DV project should be all gucci. It just stretches it slightly if it's square pixels

You could try the easycap card and an otg adapter, other people have got that working but it didn't work for me

Yep it basically acts like a monitor, so the camera works as normal. You just press record on the dvr rather than the camera

I just read the description were you mentioned it uses micro sd cards. Think I’m going to have to purchase this
