But I recently watched some clips from the 1990s British TV adaptation that starred Kate Beckinsale, and laughed at the line about holding baby Emma in his arms! It's meant to be dramatic and romantic but that line makes you stop and say, what?? Of course, Austen's audience back then didn't find it odd or uncomfortable.

I used to sit on a young woman's lap when I was 7 years old. I felt loved because she was very kind to me. I appreciated the fact that she gave me the love that my parents could not because of their upbringing. At the time she was at high school. We reconnected many years later when I was a 50 year old adult. She was married and to my surprise I found out she had a crush on me. I just loved her as I would a cousin, and was always grateful for all the love and kindness she gave me when I was a kid.
