  • In this video I show you how I forge a knife from damascus made from copper pennies , 10 cent coins and high carbon steel to make a beautiful pattern. This is part 1 video where I forge the billet in a stainless canister and etch the knife to expose the beautiful pattern .

    looks really cool. i wonder how pennies and dimes would look if you did multiple twists and layers before putting two halves around a core and forging that into a knife.

    How about a micarta handle for strength, but put a tortoise shell veneer on it for looks.

    I would definitely go with a simple copper scale for that knife. I think it would compliment the Damascus you made.

    I’d go simple with the handle, maybe black micarta or African Blackwood with brass pins. Or a nice piece of desert ironwood, not too busy though. You don’t want to take away from the blade with a busy handle (just my personal preference tho)

    It would be interresting to make it multi plies damascus blade. I bet it would be even a cooler design, although as you said to keep the center hard steel

    Continue the copper theme with a dark hard wood, blued guard, and copper wire wrap right after the guard for a inch or so. Nice job my friend.

    I'm concerned about the big inclusions showing after you ground the bevels. That's not a good sign.

      Concept vs practicality. Copper is very soft and not a great use as a blade.

    I'm not sure if a bronze cross guard and pommel would clash with the copper or not, but might be a cool way to include even more color in the project.

    Really cool looking blade man! I think a black dyed curly maple with copper pins would look cool and for the guard, if you are adding a guard, do a thin piece of copper sandwiched in between two pieces of steel.

    I made some micarta a while back and when I shaped my handle the layers that were revealed had a sort of authentic that was very similar to damascus, so I'd recommend maybe black and white micarta with a copper guard and butt cap. Just a thought though

    if you use American pennies, anything pre-82 is 95% copper. after 82, they are 98%zinc....82 is a mixed year when they transferred them and you would have to weigh them

    A single LARGE coin for the guard would be great. Stacked handle with copper every 3rd or 4th layer , dark wood thick , lighter color wood thin . Enough to make a visual difference.

  • @littletrucklove
    @littletrucklove 2 роки тому +1

    I think a hand made out of as many different little slices of wood as possible would be cool. Lots of layers in different colors to match the blade. Maybe cut up a skateboard since they are already like 8 layers typically.

    I would personally do a clear apoxy handle with coins from around the world in it or just different coins you find you enjoy looking at. Inside the clear apoxy or resin you use pit some color tint of your favorite or just clear. I would go clear with fine copper shavings as a glitter. Whatever you decide will be amazing as that blad is amazing great job

    • @chitterman
      @chitterman 2 роки тому

      @@BonifabcustomRobBonifacio that would for sure pop. If you can make small cubes to lay next to the blade to see what compliments it. Use big shaving small fine shavings. As I almost fear to busy of handle will distract from the blade. To underwhelming of handle will take away from it. Or you can just wing it and let the forging gods take control. I am excited to see what you come up with next

    But zinc isn’t magnetic... modern pennies are copper coated zinc
    Aren’t they? I play around scoring the surface of pennies then heat it up the zinc liquifies while the copper holds its shape, causing the engraved line to invert and become a raised line on the surface of the penny.

    Pretty cool! Just be careful what you share on here - the pennies are probably fine but you're technically committing and marketing a criminal offense in Canada by showing people how to repurpose dimes. Could lead to fines or worse under the criminal code and currency act. I couldn't care less, but you never know when an uptight federal employee is watching ;)
