  • Strengthening Disaster Preparedness in Tonga: A Pilot Initiative
Despite its medium-risk classification, Tonga faces significant natural hazards, including cyclones, droughts, and volcanic eruptions. Recent events, like TC Gita in 2018 and the 2022 volcanic eruption and tsunami, have highlighted the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness. Given Tonga's dispersed coastal population, innovative solutions are imperative. In response to the evolving times, we are investing in cutting-edge technology such as satellites to bolster our early warning systems.
To address critical gaps in disaster management, a pilot project proposes the enhancement of early warning systems. Through collaboration with the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites and the utilization of technical expertise in Earth observation satellites, Tonga aims to fortify its resilience against future calamities. The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) extends gratitude for this partnership, recognizing it as an opportunity for Tonga to lead advancements in disaster preparedness across the Pacific region, leveraging satellite technology.
