Steve is a genius but he's so chillax about it. He is hands down the greatest composer and lyricist of all time. There really is no one else who can be compared to him as far as pairing of exposition, character evolutions, melodies, rhyming, accompaniment, and general music.

I love the man, but I would say he's the greatest as a 'theatre maker' - you can not hands down call him the greatest composer. If we're looking at just music, then Alan Menken is far superior in my eyes with Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Aladdin, Hercules ect. I went to a show where an orchestra played the music of both, and honestly, without lyrics Sondheim's music don't excite you as much. The songs are much less melodic, some lovely harmonies, but an awful lot of repeating rhythms, that get a bit boring. Again, it works with his lyrics and as a theatre maker, he's a genius. But we can't write off the ones who specialise in the music. Look at the movie composers as well, John Williams, James Horner, Howard Shore. Or the old composers like Mozart, Bach or Beethoven. There are so many.
