There is certainly nothing haphazard about Sondheim, is there? I am so grateful to have him in our lives. And he is so willing to work with people with new ideas for his music. I saw a production of Pacific Overtures by a small, Asian theatre company in Los Angeles some years ago. They had pared down the original large cast show to fit their small cast and small performance space. It was just wonderful. I learned that they had approached Sondheim for permission to adapt the show for their company. Not only did he grant permission, he worked with them personally to make the show fit their needs. Wow! I just love him so much!

East West Players? They've done a lot of his work. I've seen Follies, Passion, and Night Music there.

Great tidbit about his character and generosity. Thanks for that. He is absolutely matter of factly confident of the quality and importance of his work, without being arrogant, from what i see here. That kind of self assurance and the talent and work ethic, AND all that incredible product of the hard work that created it. Wish I had it. The last true giant of broadway show tune composition.
This show, and Send in the clowns, alone, enough to put him on the Olympus of songwriters and composers of any age.
the perfect fit of the music to the text. wow. "is it rich, isn't it queer , me here last on the ground, you in mid-air......just when i stopped opening doors, finally realizing the one that i wanted was yours....losing my timing this late in my career"....

Thank you so much for posting this. Every time I hear Sondheim explain his work it just blows my mind. In 200 years when the Stones and Elton are distant memories, people will still go to Sondheim musicals.

It still feels like a personal bereavement. I often remember watching him watching the students on a televised workshop. Leaning forward, head slightly cocked and so caring and intent on getting the best possible performance from them.

Wouldn’t it be great to have video of Shakespeare explaining his work?

I love the smell of peen trees. Sometimes I peen for my lover. When the floor needs cleaning, I use Peen-Sol.
