I get tired of people only knowing Pretty In Pink. They have a unique sound and such intelligent lyrics. Richard is an undervalued frontman as well! Time for a reissue of their albums on 180 gram vinyl.

Who says they aren't or even more respected? In America anyway. They've been around since NYC in the 1980s; had continuous hits with heavy airplay and MTV rotation. They're the Psychedelic Furs, they're HUGE! They still tour. "There's a World Outside" has great songs.

Friend's 18th birthday party, 13th December 1980. Someone put this on & turned off the lights. We all lay on the floor in the dark & listened. Never the same again: I'm still bewitched & enraptured four decades later, by a song that's astonishing in its scope & beauty.

Amen, sista. They played a show in Dallas, in the mid 80s at the long lost and much missed Bronco Bowl, and it was easily one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen-Richard’s stage presence, and the beautiful execution of those timeless songs. I think they were opening for someone else that night, and they just blew whoever else was playing right off the stage. I saw them several times in the 80s, I think they must have toured for a decade nonstop, and they were always great, but that particular show was special, even for the Furs. I don’t go in much for nostalgia, but damn if I don’t miss the days when pop music was (mostly) this good. The 80s (bleeding over into the 90s a little bit) were the last great decade for pop music-the mix of sounds (and visuals if you count MTV) was amazing.

    Stupid on the Steinway
    So sick upon a steinway
    The sailors drown
See them talk and see them drown
And see them drink and fall around
    Upon the floor
    Sister of mine, home again
    Sister of mine, home again
    Lonely in a crowded room
The radio plays out of tune
    So silently
    The radio upon the floor
    Is stupid it plays Aznavour
    So out of key
    Sister of mine home again
    Sister of mine home again
Broken on a ship of fools
Even dreams must fall to rules
    So stupidly
Words are all just useless sound
Just like cards they fall around
    And we will be
    Sister of mine home again
    Sister of mine home again
Buy a car and watch it rust
Sister see them fall to dust
    They fall around
    In another crowded room
Paint me like the shirt I'm in
    Honestly
    Sister of mine, home again
    Sister of mine, home again
    Sister of mine
    Sister of mine
    Sister of mine

Some music reviewer counted the number of time Richard Butler said the word 'stupid' on this record, and I think the count was over 30. Hilarious. He owned implementing the word on the mainstream of the 80s. God I loved this band for hating the mainstream. The 80s was the only decade that really got to have a truly functional and giant underground culture and wow did we love mocking the above grounders.

But, as with most of my favourite bands, it seems, the Furs are hugely underrated and seem to be remembered only for the hugely overproduced and rather cheesy later stuff - and the inevitable Pretty in bleeding Pink. But, foe anyone in the know, the first eponymous album is amongst the top 10 post punk albums ever...

Love the Furs! Brings back memories of a film production class. I recorded this piece on 1/4 " tape reel to reel. Cut the chorus out, looped the tape, held the slack while the tape rounded the deck heads with my #2 pencil, and re-recorded the sampling. Ta Da, minimalist soundtrack for my Super 8 short.

Back in the day, I worked at a Music land in Wichita Kansas. Then, most all of the charting, popular music was absolute shit. I hated it! But, in 78, when I started working there, it became so exciting. Like, from 78 to 81 as the occasional punk, then post-punk, then new wave LP's would occasionally show up in our weekly boxes of product. The buyers made random catalog selections for US and import vinyl. I soon realized that I needed to unpack that box my self. We got a great discount. So, I would buy LPs solely based on if the cover looked like something cool was inside. Psychedelic furs. Yeah, let's get this one. OMG. This new music saved my life! Sister Europe was like oxygen. Still gorgeous!! Still have those LP's.

They opened for the Talking Heads Remain in Light Tour in Boston in 1980. First concert I ever went to. First song was "india". First song of first concert I ever went to. It was such an onslaught of racket and intense perfection that I've been chasing it ever since. . . .

True success for a hit song with these lyrics is that, reading the comments, we all have different associations and interpretations of the song, and of course different memories. I always thought of this song whenever I arrived on continental Europe - that "I'm home again". Europe - my true home. X

I say ‘see’ them because I have no memory of the concert due to a heady mix of pills and beer, but my mates say I had a great time.
