Joey liking both K ON and Sound Euphonium makes his opinion even more confusing. Bocchi is pretty much a mix of both shows. School band comedy of K ON and serious character drama from Sound Euphonium.

@MysticalRefpanel happy to see a fellow Joey fan. Wish people would back off and accept that man makes his own, subjective opinions without feeling the need to follow the hype crowd
I think what Joey doesn't get about social anxiety is it doesn't always present outwardly. Bocchi represents what social anxiety feels like for someone experiencing it, not what it looks like to someone else.
Brilliant summary. Again, he’s arguing out on what he’s seen outwardly, but how Bocchi feels is portrayed in a way where it forces you to understand via sight how a severely anxious person would be in place of true emotional perception.
this is exactly it. i used to have really bad social anxiety. no one could tell, but inside i was screaming, crying and sweating like crazy even if i had to pick up a simple little call or order something in a restaurant
100%. Bocchi is hands down the most relatable character in fiction to me, not even just anime fiction in general. I have absolutely felt like im on the floor screaming and dying inside at minor social inconveniences many times
ProZD came in to slam dunk again on Joey's opinions on Bocchi the Rock. Bro just decided to forgo friendships and attack straight in... Actually a legend
This is the kinda discussions I love. Sometimes Joey and Connor make these off the mark or plain bad takes (e.g. Connor calling Aqua creepy and I think stalker-like for being able to find Akane when she went missing) and Gigguk doesn’t say anything or will very lightly disagree. Like everything doesn’t need to be a deep debate but I think ProZD showed how you can strongly disagree with someone and push them to explain themselves without being (imo) antagonistic or insulting like many of the commenters here.
@@terryqokov6999Joey was trying to dance around the issue and ProZD just brought a hammer and nails to the podcast and fucking nailed his feet to the floor
@jeremyzang6291 to be fair, I also agree with this. People have really only talked about the action in JJK. Barely any talk about the story in comparison.
Yeah! I haven't seen this show so I'm not that invested into defending it- but Joey's argument is terrible! Plus, sometimes things are exaggerated in fiction because it feels more emotionally real, and emotion and interiority is more important than being realistic
Wait you're telling me when you see an attractive person your eyes don't shoot out of your sockets, your uvula turns into a heart and you don't take out a mallet from your pocket and start bonking yourself with it?
Although I disagree with Joey, I think he's referring to all the imaginations like her thinking she's Godzilla while she's anxious and stuff. But yeah, bad take from Joey
I don't understand this criticism to begin with. Character traits are played up for laughs in a comedy, it's like complaining that real people aren't as dumb as Homer Simpson.
As someone who has social anxiety that bad: Yeah, it's that bad. I've had full blown panic and anxiety attacks in public over the smallest, non-issue, things and its not fun. Of course there are some I have looked back on and giggled because the situation around it was just that absurd- but living in it is hell sometimes. I don't personally find Bocchi funny either and overall it's kind of 'eh' (except my queen pa-san) but I do really like it outside of the comedy it tries to present itself as, and definitely relate to Bocchi herself sometimes. She isn't affected by her social anxiety all the time, she has her own work arounds to lessen it or power through it in various ways, but it obviously affects how she conducts her life and that is exactly how it is. Even typing the message out is making me anxious because more than myself can see it. This truly is our trash taste take.
People can be really socially awkward. I had a friend refuses to not buy anything from a store they entered. She would rather wait in the icy cold outdoors than to wait in a lobby and talk to a receptionist. She had a panic attack when she made mistakes on her dance class that she ended up puking. She is clinically diagnosed for severe social anxiety and shows like bocchi made her feel seen. I really can't stand this apathy towards social anxiety.
Joey literally has no idea what he is talking about (whether it is social anxiety nor the show itself) and i am 500% sure he doesn't remember anything of substance from the show to have any meaningful opinion or reasoning to defend him at 2:45 either. Also how tf he went and travelled to so many placrs of different culture and gasl&ts himself into thinking that nobody is that socially awkward or anxious. he is not st00pid. literally the only reason for his stance would be that he doesnt like the idea of those people getting any sorta catharsis or validation for their lack of social skills and he doesnt wanna entertain their feelings as it might reinforce that undesired behaviour. thats it. sure nobody glitches outta existence like bocchi obviously but his take is really shallow and disingenous honestly
tbh i couldnt care less that Joey didnt enjoy Bocchi that much but his take about social anxiety is so bad the thing i related to Bocchi the most is not being able to do the things that YOU WANT TO DO, due to social anxiety. Obviously Bocchi is more exaggerated for comedy but the way she does or approach certain scenarios just hits way too close to home. Bocchi is kinda like social anxiety showed with absurdist comedy tbh and if you cant relate to it then just say you didnt enjoy the show rather than disregard a whole disorder by saying that people are "lying to themselves"
The really stupid thing about the "nobody is that socially awkward" take is that you're definitely not gonna meet the people that are, to be able to verify it. Likewise, you can't survey the dead - peak survivorship bias. So the way you find out is if people say that the show made *them* feel seen, not if *you* have or haven't met someone like that, or felt it yourself. All of that said, haven't seen the show, and it still easily could be overdone and exaggerated to an unrealistic level nonetheless, but so long as it's resonating with people, the critique falls a little flat.
it´s an absurdist comedy anime, it´s not a documentary so joey kinda missed the point anyway. also don´t trust anyone who uses phrases like "feeling seen" those are probably the most fake people you´ll ever meet.
@@symmetrie_bruch I'd rather not judge people negatively off of a single phrase? At least, I don't have good reason to, personally. I can surely imagine that "fake" people might do that sort of thing, but at the risk of accidentally dismissing people who actually do feel seen and simply wanted to say so, I'll take people at their word, if hesitantly. As for commenting on the actual show, I can't do that without being disingenuous, since, as I say, haven't seen it.
I had Bocchis level of social anxiety a few years ago. I'm not kidding when I say that speaking with someone felt worse than death. I shut myself in the bathroom the whole school days for hours just listening to music because I was deathly scared of going into my classroom, but even more scared to ask for help or tell my parents about it. To me bocchi is not exaggerated at all because she had slightly less social anxiety than me lol
I haven't watched bochi but Joey had the same opinion if not worse about Komi Can't communicate directly making fun of fans saying "oh it doesn't matter if those people do exist because they can't speak up hur dur they can never come after me" bla bla Sounding more of an ass than he ever has. I started watching komi and as someone with anxiety I can vouch while not having social anxiety that the show can very well have merit and heart to it and is a decent representation of what anxiety feels like. I'm not done with the show but I can for sure relate trying your best and failing miserably and wanting to cry but having to compose yourself, it's just a reaction brought on by the anxiety. I've also had anxiety attacks in school due to teachers throwing things where my throat closes and I, indeed cant communicate. Him clapping over mental illness that actually exist even if it's just from a handful of anime is going to age like rotting milk.
@@ViktorErikFade It would honestly be 100% fine if he just said he didn't like it because he couldn't relate or even process how it could be relatable for people, and that the characters don't feel real *to him* All of that is valid.
Okay nobody gets to decide what is a "realistic" portrayal of anxiety. For all of its external affects, it's so fucking internal. It makes you feel worse than you can ever show, and Bocchi connects to people because it's fuckign relatable in a way that isn’t often touched upon. Meanwhile saying "nobody is that socially awkward" only makes us anxious motherfuckers feel worse since it suggests we don't exist, and there's something even more wrong with us than we thought since we're connecting to this character you're calling so cringe that no one like that can be real.
Fr though, like sure i've never fallen to the floor screeching and glitching into the nth dimension but I absolutely have done and thought pretty much most of the things that were covered in the show.
Keep being anxious. Because the way i see it, You're putting too much on yourself with other highly anxious people to the others opinion on the matter, Never taking the time to understand for the other side who disagrees. It's always "They wouldn't understand because they're not anxious" Wich is so cheap, i could smell that response miles away.
The problem with Joey's take on Bocchi isn't that he doesn't like it, I don't give a fuck if he likes or dislikes the show, that's just a matter of taste. The problem is he's being incredibly ignorant and condescending on a subject he knows absolutely nothing about, and is incredibly insulting to a large group of people. It's not a "bad take" in the sense that he has weird taste, it's a "bad take" in the sense that he's objectively wrong and comes off as ignorant.
I think he's looking at the series through the wrong lens, he says that no one acts like Bocchi in real life, which is true if you're looking at the exaggerated reactions and animated effects, but it IS a representation of how people with social anxiety feel, not necessarily act
Yeah it goes beyond the surface level clown takes that doesn't harm anyone, this legitimately talks down on people who have this level of social anxiety.
@@andrewchen4872 It's invalidation. Not even just downplaying it. He's just straight up invalidating it. Which just makes the people that did feel seen by that show feel bad and seen as wrong somehow.
That's my problem too. Like I can see how the take can be explained in a way that doesn't come off as ignorant. If he said for instance that the exaggeration made it hard for him personally to get into it then it's one of those things where one can understand and sympathize. He's not a hipster or an elitist for not liking a show others do but the comments on social anxiety and introversion are just plain shit.
The problem however is that the whole argument about whether people are that socially awkward is because some fans of the show like to claim the shows depiction is “realistic”
Literally everything else Joey says about Bocchi is fine. Like I disagree on all of it but it's an opinion, whatever. I'm not even the biggest Bocchi defender anyway. The social anxiety take is what bugs me. Like how hard is it to say "maybe some people might, but it's still pretty extreme and that’s a turnoff for me" Bro didn't even have a comeback to SungWon's anecdotal evidence, just "you have villain aura"
Joey’s entire argument on Bocchi basically comes down to “If I didn’t encounter these types of people in real life then they couldn’t possibly exist” and if Joey haven’t seen black people yet I doubt he’ll believe they exist simply because he haven’t come across them yet.
That's a horrible example you did there. The thing is, Either you saw them or not, There will be still sertain characteristics that makes you realise that "Oh, Yeah, That happens to other people too." And the other hand is how bocchi is acting. It's so super up to the top of exageration, that you'll never see a person turn into a blob and next as godzilla.
@@francoguzman1236 ?????? no shit you'll never see someone turn into godzilla, what even is your argument? that's the entire point of the show, to portray the anxieties of somebody like that in an exaggerated way. bocchi feels like she "turns into a blob and into godzilla" but obviously she fucking isn't, that's just how she feels like. i don't understand what's so hard to understand. have you people never witnessed fiction before?
Add general anxiety to that too. Introversionism is not the same as GAD or social. Maybe some don't see that difference because it's invisible most of the time on the outside

Yea like Connor hasn’t even seen Bocchi and doesn’t really discuss it. I almost respect him avoiding shows he thinks he will not like. Shows he respects his time. Hard to get mad at him since he doesn’t act like he knows about the show when he says it looks like he would hate it.

I actually laughed when Connor was listing out all of the tropes that he hates in anime (highschool setting, awkward teenagers, love triangles) because those are all present in Dandadan, which Connor actually likes.
Good character writing and plot can carry a lot of weight. Dandadan doesn't spend episode after episode with nothing happening other than the aforementioned tropes.
I think what he doesn't like is just the "slice of life" thing. It's like watching a podcast, you know it's gonna be just a bunch of people talking and nothing special is really gonna happen, but in the end you can still enjoy it and turn your brain off for a moment.

I am not socially awkward, but I know quite a few people who are on that very extreme side. They absolutely do exist I knew a guy who is so terrified of people that he refused to leave his mom's side to hang out with me and I have had a few friends who made me talk to cashiers or order food for them because they were so scared they would practically stop breathing if I didn't. It was annoying sure, but people actually struggle like this in real life, and I don't think it should be taken too lightly. And I saw another comment saying that yeah, they exist but it's rare to run into them because they would shut themselves in their room. Only reason I had a bunch of friends like this was because they went to school with me. Love the boys but this is the one and only thing that makes me kind of annoyed.
I still think his “it’s not my fault all the anime in 2021 were mid” then later admitting he didn’t actually watch any anime that year was extremely atrocious. Got to be top 3 terrible take by him. (I forgot if it was 2020 or 2021 tbh)

All those weird tweets and the videos of Ado reacting to her own concerts are a huge indication that she relates heavily to Bocchi. Ado also still usually records music in her room, while her agency does everything else. Also, Joey doesn't seem to understand, he tends to not see people like Bocchi because they seclude themselves in their homes. @@waveybooo while true, the essence of Joey's statement was downplaying Bocchi's representation of social anxiety (which is a disorder distinct from shyness and introversion, despite people using it synonymously) as the internal experience that most, if not all, of those who have felt social anxiety in any significant form (where the disorder is defined by the impairment of function/obstruction of daily life) can relate to when put in a visual format. TL;DR Joey is definitely not someone who's experienced social anxiety to the extent Bocchi is trying to describe and represent, and it shows in the dismissive way he talks about it. Continue at your own discretion: Bocchi does good work showing the more obscure yet severe emotional problems that people get treated for when they're diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, and because it's obscure people can tragically think like Joey and instead of simply saying "I don't like it", they think it isn't as severe because the visual metaphor goes over their heads. That's fine (although others in this comment section might think otherwise), but it's also upsetting due to the feeling of invalidation that comes from that less-than-researched and less-than-open-minded opinion. It's a personal opinion that's very steeped in both bias and an unwillingness to change despite evidence against it, it's fine, but only as fine as it is to accept that some people are just dismissive sometimes. Not a good thing, but not immediately controllable in a lot of cases, and most times better to move on. Ironically, I didn't move on immediately though... Speaking of not moving on, if you want to read an essay on mental illness (mostly depression) in media and representation and why visual metaphors can work, my neurodivergent ahh decided to write one: In other words, it's like watching a media representation of an episode of depression (from major depresive disorder), say where you make the world black and white in a visual form of anhedonia (an- no; hedonia- pleasure) where previously fun or enjoyable activities become less and less fun until enjoyment is almost impossible. Causes of this symptom include the other symptoms present in depressive disorders: low self-esteem, negative interpretation of ambiguous events, and emotional dysregulation as well as the most important one: numbness. So much of a depressed individual's emotional experience is painful that the mind learns to numb itself, and the problem is that emotional numbness works like anaesthesia rather than analgesia (pain suppressants/killers), because all pleasure acts as an opposite to pain. Pain is a warning signal, pleasure is a reinforcing signal, to reinforce without pain is to jump headfirst off a cliff because of the thrill. So the mind's best way of fighting against emotional pain without even worse consequences-including physical harm and death-is to simply numb all emotions, and to become inactive, like one would see in the hypersomnia or insomnia, low self-esteem and negative self-talk (self-deprecation), negative interpretation of ambiguous events (neutral events and scenarios are perceived as negative), and even the tendency for depressed people's opinions of reality to be more objective and accurate due to their lacking subjectivity etc. this all can be visually abbreviated as a black-and-white world of objective survival rather than one of colour and enjoyment. The point of subjectivity is to believe in something not-currently or previously-real, such as the objective substance of justice (the substance of a concept born from the human mind doesn't exist, this is a human standard imposed onto the world, one cannot find it in the smallest molecules, atoms, and quarks of the world) and making it real (such as how we all agree to treat people in a somewhat fair way, and thus make a shared mental contract that creates civilisations and justice systems, no matter how flawed, they attempt something that other species and other aspects of reality do not and cannot), this is the same way colour is "not a thing" in nature, it's just different wavelengths of light, but by making use of the way our eyes see we can paint pictures and paintings that evoke emotion and inspire despite simply being blobs of matter on somewhat flat, sometimes not flat, surfaces. This is not objective reality, this is subjective reality, the belief and thoughts borne by the unknown and the ambiguous to create a reality that doesn't yet exist, which is not guaranteed to succeed, but is much more successful at growth than simply staying inactive. That being said, due to that low chance of success, in a high stress or dangerous environment survival can only be guaranteed by being more preoccupied with "what is" than "what could be", growth is not a risk worth taking when death is more immediate, so black and white (presence of or absence of light, very real universal phenomena) rather than colour (perception of different types of light, very personal opinion) is a very apt visual shorthand. Now it's not a one-to-one metaphor, humans' and other creatures' colour vision aid in better discretion of relevant objects and creatures, but that's similar enough to why we enjoy things, to expand our experience when the dangers are low enough that it's worth it to be risky and find higher peaks to stumble on but still climb. There are cultures that have more names for the colour green than English does for the colour blue, simply because it's more relevant and subjectively important to them to be able to tell the types of plants. That's a very important survival strategy for them, but not universal, in a remotely similar way as you might enjoy a podcast and enjoy and learn from it, but others will simply skip over it or stop watching after a while. This is all a very long-winded, but-I would like to think-relatively researched way of saying that Bocchi the Rock's representation of anxiety is an accurate portrayal and visual shorthand for the lived experience of anxiety, rather than the objective signs one might try to see without asking and talking to someone who's experienced it. Joey's dismissiveness on it is natural for someone who hasn't learned much about this, and ignorance itself isn't a sin, it's the fact he's unwilling to leave space for the event that he might be (and from what I can see, most probably is) closed-minded about this topic.
@@nin2494 i really appreciate you dedicating the time to write me and entire deep-dive of the representation of social anxiety in bocchi and simply media in general, and while i definitely see where you're coming from, but I still think bocchi exaggerates these traits *way* too far yes, despite technically being in the target demographic made for bocchi (introverted highschooler who can't speak and express their emotions well and struggles far too much to create any sort of meaningful connections), I understand the use of visual metaphors and comedy to represent anxiety but bocchi’s behaviours are so extreme that i feel like they lose relatability for many viewers, for example, things like hiding in trash cans, collapsing in bizarre poses, or wearing *mascot suits to avoid attention* (which is just straight up stupid) are exaggerated to a point that they feel more like caricatures than genuine reflections of social anxiety. even the spiraling internal monologues, while entertaining, push the limits of realism im not saying the show can’t represent anxiety effectively-some scenes are done really well and did hit-but bocchi’s portrayal leans heavily into humor and absurdity. for me, that makes it harder to take the depiction seriously or connect it to real-life experiences of social anxiety, but i guess at the end of the day, media representation is subjective, so maybe this interpretation works for you. but i know that for me though, it feels like they played up the comedy at the cost of making bocchi’s anxiety feel believable or grounded (which is where i feel joey stands aswell)
@@waveybooo If you don't mind another person jumping into this, if that's what Joey said then really I don't think you'd have the backlash that he has because one can stop, think about it and go "Yeah that makes sense.". You would have people still arguing that expecting realism out of what is meant to be an absurdist comedy is... well absurd but also more people generally understanding. The problem is with Joey's statements regarding people with anxiety and introversion and how no one's exactly like this which go beyond opinions on a show, especially people have expressed why they relate to the show and for them it can feel pretty extreme. Whether or not he likes Bocchi doesn't matter, it's the lack of regard for people who suffer with social anxiety that makes it a problem and it goes beyond just "bad takes".
@@the-aspiring-creator4249 why are people taken his off-the-cuff arguement as a prewritten statement to the world on his opinions on social norms? Was it poorly worded? Sure. That's it. It stops there.
I am a person who had such extreme social anxiety I sat on the toilet every school day the whole day for like a month because I was too scared to sit in a room with a lot of people, and I was also too scared to tell anyone about my social anxiety. I absolutely love Bocchi the Rock because I can relate to her social anxiety and her journey getting rid of it because I have done the same journey myself.
As much as I don't agree with Joey with his social anxiety takes, that clap back he gave Sung won for introverts being anxious around him simply because of his terrifying aura is so funny
I think what he’s trying to say is that he finds those over exaggerated aspects of Bocchi more annoying when you’re supposed to take aspects of the her story seriously where Nichijou is just comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously or is trying to say anything about those with social anxiety. (Not saying I agree or disagree have no stance on that but I’d assume that’s what he means) What I would not defend is saying nobody acts like that because he knows introverts who aren’t that socially awkward because there is a difference between introversion and social anxiety.

I had a crush on a girl in highschool, and in typical fashion in order to make her like me I wanted to get into some of the things she was into, so I decided to watch an anime that was one of her hyperfixations, it was one that she talked about all the time and had many friends that also really loved. At this point in my life I had only seen your Soul Eaters, your DBZ, and your Tokyo Ghouls, so I didn't have high hopes for this anime, but I still wanted to give it a shot so I can talk to my crush about her favorite anime. To my surprise this anime fucking slaps, it was genuinely good, despite everything I had known about anime at that time this anime really made me turn a new leaf, and instead of pretending to like this show to my crush, I genuinely loved it and we connected talking about it, what was this anime? It was... Lovelive Sunshine.
About Bocchi: Something doesn't have to be 100% accurate to real life to be relatable. Bocchi is relatable because she does what a lot of introverts *feel* like. Introverts feel like crawling into a trash can, Bocchi actually does it.
"Sauerkraut comes with everything" I'm German and probably eat Sauerkraut once a year if that. Though I'll say I feel like many younger Germans basically eat more Italian food than German food. Making good pasta is quicker and cheaper than most German cuisine.
listening to Joey defend himself for that BTR take really is annoying. He's just being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian - just so he can have an opinion different from the rest. He isn't even pointing out stuff that people who legit did not like BTR would point out eg. they don't like cute girls doing cute things genre etc. It was like he didn't have a brand of having actual analysis, and critique of the things he watched, and instead just blurted out an opinion out of clips, and synopsis. Joey is just a contrarian as always.
Brilliant summary. Again, he’s arguing out on what he’s seen outwardly, but how Bocchi feels is portrayed in a way where it forces you to understand via sight how a severely anxious person would be in place of true emotional perception.

Although I disagree with Joey, I think he's referring to all the imaginations like her thinking she's Godzilla while she's anxious and stuff. But yeah, bad take from Joey
I don't understand this criticism to begin with. Character traits are played up for laughs in a comedy, it's like complaining that real people aren't as dumb as Homer Simpson.
no way he's still doubling down on this horrendous take 😭
As someone who has social anxiety that bad: Yeah, it's that bad.
I really can't stand this apathy towards social anxiety.
you can?
Joey literally has no idea what he is talking about (whether it is social anxiety nor the show itself) and i am 500% sure he doesn't remember anything of substance from the show to have any meaningful opinion or reasoning to defend him at 2:45 either.
Also how tf he went and travelled to so many placrs of different culture and gasl&ts himself into thinking that nobody is that socially awkward or anxious.
he is not st00pid. literally the only reason for his stance would be that he doesnt like the idea of those people getting any sorta catharsis or validation for their lack of social skills and he doesnt wanna entertain their feelings as it might reinforce that undesired behaviour. thats it.
sure nobody glitches outta existence like bocchi obviously but his take is
really shallow and disingenous honestly
tbh i couldnt care less that Joey didnt enjoy Bocchi that much but his take about social anxiety is so bad
the thing i related to Bocchi the most is not being able to do the things that YOU WANT TO DO, due to social anxiety.
+
You mean you can't stand it? Same.
I haven't watched bochi but Joey had the same opinion if not worse about Komi Can't communicate directly making fun of fans saying "oh it doesn't matter if those people do exist because they can't speak up hur dur they can never come after me" bla bla
Sounding more of an ass than he ever has.
@@ViktorErikFade It would honestly be 100% fine if he just said he didn't like it because he couldn't relate or even process how it could be relatable for people, and that the characters don't feel real *to him*
All of that is valid.

Ado literally said her favorite anime is Bocchi because she's so much like her. All those weird tweets and the videos of Ado reacting to her own concerts are a huge indication that she relates heavily to Bocchi. Not to mention the hordes of socially anxious fans online who love her because now they have a famous person representing them in media. Ado also still usually records music in her room, while her agency does everything else.
Also, Joey doesn't seem to understand, he tends to not see people like Bocchi because they seclude themselves in their homes. The hyper-introverted people who met ProZD in a con are just the braver ones. Like FFS everyone is indoors and online too much, we have a global male loneliness epidemic, and there are both female and male (and enby) hikikomoris in the country he is currently residing in.
And I question his knowledge in music, I think he's just an "expert" in Western music and doesn't know much about Japanese music, because of Yama, the singer who is literally shyer than Ado, with stage fright, wears a mask, and doesn't even reveal anything about themself. Their age, gender, and interests are completely secret, unlike Ado.

How Joey, in the land of hikikomori, does not think social anxiety is real?
his argument wasn't that it wasn't real?
@@waveybooo while true, the essence of Joey's statement was downplaying Bocchi's representation of social anxiety (which is a disorder distinct from shyness and introversion, despite people using it synonymously) as the internal experience that most, if not all, of those who have felt social anxiety in any significant form (where the disorder is defined by the impairment of function/obstruction of daily life) can relate to when put in a visual format. TL;DR Joey is definitely not someone who's experienced social anxiety to the extent Bocchi is trying to describe and represent, and it shows in the dismissive way he talks about it. Continue at your own discretion:
Bocchi does good work showing the more obscure yet severe emotional problems that people get treated for when they're diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, and because it's obscure people can tragically think like Joey and instead of simply saying "I don't like it", they think it isn't as severe because the visual metaphor goes over their heads. Speaking of not moving on, if you want to read an essay on mental illness (mostly depression) in media and representation and why visual metaphors can work, my neurodivergent ahh decided to write one:
In other words, it's like watching a media representation of an episode of depression (from major depresive disorder), say where you make the world black and white in a visual form of anhedonia (an- no; hedonia- pleasure) where previously fun or enjoyable activities become less and less fun until enjoyment is almost impossible.
Joey's dismissiveness on it is natural for someone who hasn't learned much about this, and ignorance itself isn't a sin, it's the fact he's unwilling to leave space for the event that he might be (and from what I can see, most probably is) closed-minded about this topic.

i really appreciate you dedicating the time to write me and entire deep-dive of the representation of social anxiety in bocchi and simply media in general, and while i definitely see where you're coming from, but I still think bocchi exaggerates these traits *way* too far
yes, despite technically being in the target demographic made for bocchi (introverted highschooler who can't speak and express their emotions well and struggles far too much to create any sort of meaningful connections), I understand the use of visual metaphors and comedy to represent anxiety but bocchi’s behaviours are so extreme that i feel like they lose relatability for many viewers, for example, things like hiding in trash cans, collapsing in bizarre poses, or wearing *mascot suits to avoid attention* (which is just straight up stupid) are exaggerated to a point that they feel more like caricatures than genuine reflections of social anxiety. even the spiraling internal monologues, while entertaining, push the limits of realism
im not saying the show can’t represent anxiety effectively-some scenes are done really well and did hit-but bocchi’s portrayal leans heavily into humor and absurdity. for me, that makes it harder to take the depiction seriously or connect it to real-life experiences of social anxiety, but i guess at the end of the day, media representation is subjective, so maybe this interpretation works for you. but i know that for me though, it feels like they played up the comedy at the cost of making bocchi’s anxiety feel believable or grounded (which is where i feel joey stands aswell)
