  • On Saturday November 23, 2019 I went out to the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve to do a demonstration pottery firing. The pot came out great, check out how this primitive firing was done and get a brief tour of the museum and rock art.

My first piece was done like this, except I put it directly on the coals. It did crack, which is what I expected, but didn't care, since I planned on making grog out of it. I just wanted to do a practice run before I made something nice. I'll let you know how my next piece turns out.

also do you think the Indians would have used grass?

Grass and weeds were used to start the fire, but I have experimented with firing using only grass and it is difficult to use because it burns to ash so quickly. You basically need a truckload of grass and you need to keep throwing on armfuls. Also the pot ends up getting smothered with ashes and will not properly oxidize.
