I know I’m late to this video, but with an 8 week old, I’m so glad to see that what has worked for you is working for me too! I follow the “easy” method (eat, activity, sleep/you time) from the Baby Whisperer book, which is the same as “eat play sleep”, started at 5-6 weeks old. We do 3 hour intervals throughout the day and our baby sleeps 6-8 hour intervals at night before a feed then another 3-4 hour stretch of sleep. It’s been wonderful!

I’m not a mom yet but I have worked with many babies and young children. It’s so hard to give specific tips because every baby is different and has different needs. I have some kids that I can lay in their bed and fall right asleep no crying. Others I will read books or rock them. Trial and error is important! And as you mentioned, not stressing and staying positive is the best advice. Stay strong moms/dads and child care workers!

My number one tip for getting my 5 month old baby boy to sleep better through naps and nighttime sleep, is definitely what you said the consistency, and we have stuck with the eat, play, sleep routine since he was first born as much as we could, and I honestly feel like it has 100% helped him learn to fall asleep on his own. Very rarely does he ever cry while he's going down, and if he does I know something else is wrong. I think just because we have tried to stick to that schedule and routine as much as we could it has helped us a ton. Thanks for your video! I always enjoy what you share!

So many great tips! We had our daughter sleeping through the night by 5 weeks old and we swear by routines and consistency. We then used those same habits to teach her how to nap (she was a HORRIBLE napper haha) and put her into a napping schedule and she's done so well with it. She's now about to be 6 months old on the 28th and our household runs on the same schedule every day. It makes life so much easier. And like you said, the better they're sleeping, the happier they are! :) lifesaver!

My baby is an IVF baby he took us 17 transfers to get him, he sleeps in his own bed in our room he is 5 months old, there is no way I could let him sleep in his own room right now, in saying that he sleeps through the night, he goes down at 9 pm and wakes up at 6 am, I need to have him next to me, Benjamin talks to himself and that's how he gets to sleep. But he is a not a day time sleeper he does not have any longer than 15 minutes during the day. He will be our one and only he is a true miracle we have no chance to have a baby with out IVF. I think we all do things differently and that is ok. Never ever could I ever let him cry his little head off, not even for a second. I have some PTSD from the 6 loses we had, so for me I need to have him close.

Nikki Mctouton wow 17!! Dear god, my heart goes out to you! So happy you have your miracle baby now! Of course you keep him close, whatever works for the both of you. I always say that sleep training and letting the baby sleep in its own room instead of parents room or bed, is for the parents comfort mostly. If you enjoy having him close to you at night, if you dont mind rocking/feeding him to sleep, if you have found your own ways to soothe each other, then go for it and enjoy it. This is your time, feel it the best way possible, whatever that might look like!

I sleep in my babies room. I have a bed in his room that I sleep in. He sleeps in his crib but he does wake up through the night and honestly it’s just easier for me to bring him into bed with me for the rest of the night until morning. I know the risks of sleeping with baby but it’s the only way I’ll ever get any kind of sleep. He isn’t much of a day sleeper either. His first nap he usually sleeps from 15-30 mins. His second nap he will sleep up to 2 hours.

I always did co sleeping with my kids, (3 children and now 5 week baby). As I only do breastfeeding so I find it much easier if they with me on my bed. All of them slept through the night around 5, to 6 months of age. And new baby also started to sleep now for longer stretches.

Wow did I need this video today. My baby is around the same age as your girl, and she is going through a lot of stuff. She got two teeth this month, and I can tell she’s developmentally taking leaps and bounds. She’s normally a wonderful sleeper and takes good naps during the day, but lately it’s been rough to put her down for her naps. I don’t believe in letting them cry it out either, but today my girl was struggling. So tired, only taking 15 minute naps. I’m thankful that during one of those naps I was able to make some lunch and watch most of this video. You reminded me that there’s only so much we can do before they need to learn to self soothe, and the necessity of naps to have a good night’s sleep. I finally just changed her, fed her, swaddled, and then walked away. She cried for less than two minutes and then immediately fell asleep. Thank you so much for reminding me to be flexible and needing to always be on my toes about changing routine when necessary!

Excellent differentiation between self soothing and 'crying out' -- thank you for making that point! Crying is a form of communication. I lilke how you use certain sensations routinely to help baby regulate her/him self. I am a pediatric OT so I love how you consciously incorporate certain sensations -- one powerful thing that you are doing, but did not mention was the soothing, rhythmic motion on the rocking chair on the way to bed. That works! Regards, IreneMar from BestBabyBeginnings.

We are SOOOOO on the same page. This is super encouraging to me as a first time mumma!
My tip along the lines of 'don't stress' is if your baby is having an off day (we all do) then placing your baby in a carrier (e.g. ergo baby) can really help. You can get things done while your baby sleeps well in the carrier. Then at the next sleep time you can try again in the cot/crib. This is so much better than trying to 'will' your baby into sleep if it just isn't going to happen! Don't make a bad day worse, just go with the flow. I learnt the hard way!!! :)
Thanks Nat for one of your BEST videos yet :P

Natalie this is the best sleep video I have seen, I agree with all your gentle methods. Sleep, feed, play is definitely the best way to go. My son self soothes by rubbing his lips, and my daughter self soothes by sucking her thumb, both kids attapted these strategies themselves and learned them at different times (Charlie was 11months, Clara at 2months), best thing we can do is support and love them until they learn that skill xx

Love your videos Natalie. So helpful and actually help me relax and calm down in my stressful moments. My 3 month old son has just recently (like the last week) finally gotten into a sleep routine at night. And the things I've found helpful are dimming the lights, giving him his passi and patting his bottom lightly and he falls right off usually within a minute and is down for 9hrs usually. We always feed him right before bed and change him into "Jammies" so maybe that triggers night time too. It's been so nice to get the rest I need. And we both wake refreshed and ready for the new day in the morning.

AMEN Natalie! A rested house is a HAPPY house! We followed the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Dr. Weissbluth, it follows the eat, play, sleep method too. The best thing we've learned from it is "Sleep begets sleep," meaning the more sleep they get during the day, the better they sleep at night and for my kids that is DEFINITELY true! You're doing a great job, thank you for pointing out how important a well rested mama is!

Thank you for the advise . Very helpful. I have a 2 month old son and his sleeping I feel is getting better , however the last couple of days he's having a really hard time going down for a nap, he looks extremely tired but he closes his eyes then wakes up right away, making him fussy all day . He's struggling to go to sleep at night too so I decided I just needed to pray for my baby and it works miracles because right now he's sound asleep. #powerofprayer

Susie duenas finally I found a comment from someone who shares something In common with my baby boy . Been scrolling and scrolling , thought he was the only one who struggled sleeping during the day. He also looks extremely tired and even yawns so I know he is , he will look as if he’s about to nap and close his eyes and be still and quiet and than all of a sudden he’s awake and fussing. If he happens to fall asleep it’s for no more than 20 min unless somehow he has a miracle nap and that would only be on my chest . he sleeps fine at night . Few hours at a time .

You are amazing, Natalie. Your videos have helped me out so much. My baby is now 14 months. I have been watching your videos since I was pregnant. I do breastfeed my baby before naps and bedtime. Sometimes she falls asleep at the breast and other times I sing to her and rock her to sleep. As I am rocking her to sleep and singing to her she hums along. She used to wake up several times during the night but now she sleeps so much better, as she is able to transition well from one sleep cycle to the next. I am grateful to God. I am hoping that at some point I won't have to rock her to sleep, as she keeps getting heavier. For now, I am happy to show off my muscles. Lol! It's a work out! Thank you for all of the tips and encouragement you give to moms (:

  • @meikalewellyn9646

Oh my goodness right around the 3 minute mark you totally spoke my mind! I have said time and time again that I cannot be the mom I am meant to be if I don't get enough sleep. There are people out there who can survive on minimal sleep, my husband being one of them. I however am not one of those people. I need to get consistent rest every night in order to be the very best version of myself. I feel better, interact better with others, and perhaps the most important--I'm a better momma for my kiddo! I am expecting baby number 2 within the next month, and I am terrified that we are going to run into the same sleep issues we ran into with our daughter. I'm doing all of the research I can now to prepare myself and hopefully create a better sleeper this time. As a first time mom I just did so many things that I know now were "wrong" and now is all I have to do this time is learn from those mistakes, and keep watching awesome videos like this! Thanks so much for your video, I loved this one and the routine one last week!

We had 4 baby's they are all different in many ways. For me having a routine from day one has made a large impact on growing good citizens and positive life now routine, Now into their 20's. Our oldest son is now married and they have a new born 5 months so much fun. I'm bonding being a Grandmother and learning the do's and don'ts. Thank you for sharing this..eat,play,sleep routine. Blessings to your family and a wonderful Mom!! I myself are a twin and my twin had a baby 7 weeks apart from mine. She criticized me from time to time about having a routine. So this was a challenge but it has paid off in many ways and I'm sure glad we stuck to it. One thing I'd like to add is discuss and have the same idea's or plans worked out w husband and wife before baby comes is very important, being open to your spouse and just working together as a team in raising yours kids is the best.

Wow i never had thought this topic will be trending sleep training is what i did over 8 years ago with my first born child even before its all out in youtube lol 😄 not really realizing it, coz at that time when i had my first born most people around me was against it and thought of me as am a weird mom having a schedule for my child, the thruth is that i was just only thinking of my child's health being a new mom we everything that is best for our child and as a baby they need a good quality of sleep and rest to help them grow happy and healthy, i never experience though my child cried really wild as a baby nor let him cry over a minute coz i always make sure i always check on him and attend to his need all the time that he needs me and it works for me for us the whole sleep training did great, untill now he is eight years old he grown up happy and well diciplined, responsible and healthy kid. and now that we are having our second baby soon i know ill definitely do the same 😊 (Just my own experience)

Natalie!!!! I really hope you see my comment. 😁 first I want to say I've been watching your channel from the very beginning. We are completely different people, but I enjoy seeing all the love and positively your little family has. I am currently reading a book called "Positive parenting" from Rebecca Eanes. I think you would really enjoy it. You might find things that you already know, but it is such an insightful read when you are raising children. It teaches you how to build a connection with your children beyond parenting. and it also has practices you and your husband can do. I found it is really bringing us together more as a connected family. Especially being a mom of 2. a toddler and a mewborn. I love you guys! and thankyou for reading my comment ! 💕

I always let my baby cry - our pediatrician told me to have a set time in my head that I would allow her to cry before I went to her. I could tell the difference in her crying and if it was a hysterical cry I went to her immediately, but if it was her I want to be held cry then I let her cry for about 5 minutes before I would go to her. Sometimes she would go back to sleep and other times I would get up. It definitely helped her learn to sleep on her own. I needed my sleep to be a good mom and I feel that she got more and better sleep because she may not be fully awake when crying (she would sleep for another hour after she cried in the morning) and if I ran to her the minute she started crying then she would've woken up and she would have lost out on sleep. Now shes almost 5 and is a wonderful sleeper. We still have periods when she wakes up at night and hollers for me (we are in this period right now) then she'll go back to not waking up at all for awhile.

Yes just did this yesterday for the first time for my five week old and although he slept on his tummy, he did sleep through the majority of the night for the first time ever. I slept next to him on the bed next to a nook that he sleeps in, so I was waking up every bit of time to make sure that his little face was in smashed into the side but it never was because he has mastered tummy time and is capable of moving his head and rolling over. Which I believe is the only fear parents have been letting their newborn sleep on their tummy. I am so thankful for a good nights sleep finally!

What happens when your baby doesn't like routine, when she sees any signal of bed time she freaks out and screams and fights sleep constantly and theres no way around adding a bottle sometimes, or when she wakes up constantly screaming from reflux and isnt hungry after her nap and refuses to go back to sleep.

We consistently do the eat, play, sleep method during the day and he has a structured bedtime routine of bath, lotion, nurse, cuddle, and then down to sleep. He sleeps roughly 6:30pm - 6:30am every night. The problem is, my sister's wedding is at 7pm and she wants him to be there for a short period of time after the ceremony for pictures. Natalie,
I very much enjoy all of your videos and now they hold greater meaning as I am expecting my first child at the end of April 2018. My husband and I felt we were at a good time in our lives to begin a family and we are both so excited. However, after our first appointment (where we got to see our wiggling baby!) he expressed a sense of shock and fear because it finally seemed real to him. As the one who is pregnant and experiencing the symptoms I understand how I have had more time for it to feel real. Do you have any suggestions on how I can help him feel involved with the pregnancy throughout?
Thank you and keep making wonderful videos!

I c an agreed with the “well rested Mom makes for a better happier home” right I have a three year old. Then I have 2 children both under three that I babysit on top of being pregnant with my son. The nights I sleep with out waking up at 2 am are much better than those when I wake up two-three times. For nap times the older two sleep where they drop and I don’t touch them they are both pretty light sleepers when it comes to movement. For the youngest she sleeps with no noise at home and I can tell this because by time I get her to nap if something makes a loud noise like the trash truck outside or the 2 year old is being extra loud she wakes up crying. With this process it takes me up to three hours to get her down so I can feed the older two and myself. And I’m in bed dead on my feet by 7 pm. Which means I’m typically waking up between 12-4 or some days I’m just up and can’t get back to sleep at 4 am

    • @kaylamarie4640
      @kaylamarie4640 7 років тому

When I’m not rested I get tired of the fighting between the toddlers a lot faster than when I sleep through the night and wake up just before the 2 year old gets dropped off.

Hi Freckle Finance. I also follow the Baby Wise principle of eat wake (or play) sleep with my 12 week old. Early on the wake time is almost nonexistent but by now (since your comment is from 2 months ago) the wake time should be more defined and definitely noticeable.

FTM here: I am transitioning my 4 month old out of a swaddle. We have the Halo swaddle that allows both arms to be down, then 1 arm down, and then both arms out. We are on the both arms out stage because she now can roll over easily (she has yet to roll over in her crib at night) and she just can't stop moving her arms around and waking herself up! Any advice out there?Sincerely,One Tired Mama!

Hi Natalie, I really enjoy following your vlog. I have 5 month old twin girls. I wonder if you have a sleep video for putting twin infants to bed. My girls do get consistent naps and do have a long sleep period at night but it’s been getting more challenging to get them to sleep. I am inspired to help them learn to self soothe more but wondering how you approach it with twins and waking each other up. Also in the night if your baby wakes what do you do? Thanks!

Loved these tips! My daughter is 10 months and I have tried everything to put her to sleep in her own room. I’ve tried, lovies, blankets, swaddles, her stuffed bunny, sound machine, she won’t suck a pacifier! I’ve tried laying her in her bed and leaving but she screams as soon as she touches her bed ( I don’t leave her in there screaming I pick her up) She started sleeping in her room at 4 months and was sleeping through the night! But, now she wakes up every 3-4 hours! This started after we went on vacation! Any tips will help!

I actually have a question that's more geared for us adults (young, and old) and sort of a personal question on self - soothing. What do you do to self-soothe yourself on sleepless nights? I've had a lot of those due to school and finals which are over and I just wanna know so that I can use those tips to self-soothe myself even though I'm already 20 and not a baby anymore.

Emily Elizabeth I'm not going to lie the first month or two is difficult. You're going to be tired and frustrated, but the second you pick up your baby to feed or cuddle it all melts away. There were nights that I slept maybe 3 hours total and I would still pick up my son and smile. You will be so full of love for your little one that the sleeplessness is so worth it. My son is now sleeping through the night and there are times I wake up and miss him. The first months are such a blur and when you look back on them all you'll think of is the love you have for your squishy little baby! So be excited the sleep deprivation passes so quickly!

    • @emilyburns4474
      @emilyburns4474 7 років тому +1

Emily Elizabeth you just have to take it one night at a time and when that get too much to handle, one feeding at a time! Take any help that is offered! If your in-laws offer to let you have a nap TAKE IT! Sleep when your little one sleeps even if that means sleeping all throughout the day. I know I felt so bad that nothing was getting done while I was home all day. But remember the most important thing is that you and your little one are happy and healthy! The dishes can wait! Also a nice long shower will do wonders for your state of mind and energy!

I am still nursing my one year old to sleep 😅........
She sleeps wonderfully! Seriously! But I know the time is coming when I will need to stop this. I'm scared it's going to be so difficult 😩. I don't want to make her cry or be upset... ugh. Even with the going in and out of her room, it breaks my heart for her to be crying before she falls asleep.
    Momming is so hard sometimes.
Also, do you have tips for what you do when your babies wake at night? Do you go in and soothe without picking up?
