    Such a wonderful list! I still remember when I read The Wall (in German) for the first time in my twenties, many, many years ago. It made a huge impression, so I'm extra happy it made your favorite 2023-list. The Parisian / Enter Ghost are on my Palestine reading list &I hope to get to them soon.

      I'm so glad I read The Wall this year, and that there was a new translation for me to read in English. I wish I could read it in German - I tried studying German on my own in my 20s and maybe need to pick it back up. I'm going to read Enter Ghost as soon as I can get to it! Happy New Year!

    The Wall is in my online cart. Ann Novella actually recommended it to me. Hurricane Season was tremendous. I love Melchor’s writing. I need to sign up for indie newsletters! The Parisian is on my shelf!!! I hope to read it with Britta. 😊

    What a great list. I really enjoyed the bonus of books by the same press. I trust your reviews because the ones I’ve read match up to what you’ve said. I also liked you talking about your joy about books I think I’m similar. I’ve never had a DNF ( but had some I didn’t care for as much) I do read a lot of books in translation which usually means indie presses. This channel is making me go shopping

      @eyesonindie  8 місяців тому

      You've made my day! Thank you so much for your kind words. I am the exact same way with DNFs. It's rare that I don't finish a book I've started, and in the few cases where I don't finish...I don't intentionally stop reading it or DNF it. I kind of just...pick something else up and never return to it. Happy reading to you!!

    I’m pretty sure very few, if any of your books will be on other peoples 2023 favorites but that’s why I love your channel! I’m very much curbing my book buying this year but, as a lover of Indian literature, House of Caravans has been on my radar for a while so …🤔😉

      You always make my day! Thanks so much for the kind message. I hear you about curbing book buying!! House of Caravans sounds great, though. But no pressure!! :)

    Thanks so much for this video Sarah, it was such a pleasant and enjoyable watch! I've heard a few people mention The Wall and you finally sold me on it. I've also added The Art of Libromancy, House of Caravans and The Parisian to my TBR 😄

    Thank you for all the work you do on this channel!! You’re one of my go-to sources for book recommendations. I just requested that my library order Sister Golden Calf, and I got gifted Kingdoms of Elfin for Christmas and I’m very excited to dig in! Re Grove Press, I just finished Viet Thanh Nguyen’s memoir, A Man of Two Faces, and it was amazing. Definitely one of my top 10 books of last year. I think you might really like it. And I will definitely be checking out Raised by Wolves! Happy New Year 🎉

    What a fantastic list. Putting The Wall, Hurricane Season, Strip, Art of Libromancy, and The Parisian on my list. I've had In the Distance on my shelf to read for years--thank you for reminding me to move it up the list, and I'm reading The Sleeping Car Porter for a buddy read in March.

    • @eyesonindie
      @eyesonindie  8 місяців тому

      Amazing!!! I loved all of those books. =) In the Distance might have been my favorite straight-up story of all those you listed. It's just such a great (though harsh) adventure. Along with Strip, which was a total page turner (but also covers difficult subjects). Happy New Year, and happy reading!

    The very 1st video of yours that I watched was your best of 2022, which was also by your tree.🙂🎄 The view of the books from your lovely reading chair was a nice addition. I will be looking these up these up today to decide which ones I will be adding to my tbr. I am immediately drawn to the short story and poetry collections first. Happy New Year and Happy Reading!📚

      Aw, that's right! It was by my tree. Ha! I don't have very many places to film in my condo, and that spot is right by the only windows that get any light. Thanks so much for your kind comment, and Happy New Year to you!

    Your husband gives good compliment.
    Sarah, this video was brilliant! So many of these videos I have read or rejected three quarters of the books listed. I am returning, having given up remembering all the books I want to read, watching it on my computer with my keep notes app on my pjone open so I can remember them all... But I really want to read the Isabella Hammad because she's brilliant and the book about bias in the publishing industry.
    While I didn't enjoy Carpentaria, I think you will have the patients to get everything out of it and really love it.

      You made my day! Thank you so much for the kind comment! I'm so glad Enter Ghost made it to your top reads of the year list...because I'm eager to read it ASAP! I'm curious about Carpentaria, but we'll see. It might be over my head! Happy New Year!

    i've been meaning to read The Wall for such a long time, this is a good reminder for me to get to it.
    like the carpenteria cover!
    The poetry collection sound brilliant. I struggled with all the collections i tried last year, both from an indie press and one from a Korea author. I liked them but I suspect I'm out of practicce with reading poetry. I don't let the writing sit with me as long as I used to when I read it more regularly.
    These all sound brilliant. Great job, as always.

      @eyesonindie  8 місяців тому

      I struggled with poetry last year too, but I read From From right at the end of the year, and it really stood out. I'm hoping to read much more poetry this year. Thanks so much for the kind message, and Happy New Year!

    Ooh, Carpentaria has been on my list for a while. Thanks for the heads up. Like your advise about The Lost Journals. Sometimes you have to just experience the book on its own terms and let the book work its magic. Enter Ghost is on my list for this year.

    • @eyesonindie

      I'm pre-ordering Carpentaria for sure!! =) And I can't wait to read Enter Ghost; it's on my list for early this year. Happy New Year!!

    I've heard really good things about The Wall - I literally bought a copy of it last week! Pollak's Arm also sounds intriguing as I love art / art history in general. Trust was one of my favorite books of 2023 so In the Distance is obviously also on my TBR b/c I loved Diaz's writing style so so much!

    • @eyesonindie
      @eyesonindie  8 місяців тому +1

      This is all amazing! I think I want to read The Wall again...and I'm not a re-reader at all! (I wish I was). In the Distance is an incredible story/adventure. I loved it. And Pollak's Arm is ALL about art and art history! Thanks so much for watching and Happy New Year!

    As always you recommend such great books Sarah! 😍 The Wall is one of those that every time I see someone talk about I put it on my wtr list but I still haven’t gotten to it! Maybe this year will be the one 🤞🏼
    The Art of Libromancy and Pale Shadows are also going on my list

    Oh PS- We may be related to Sacajawea’s “husband.” His brother is one of our ancestors, at least on paper. There is suspected to be an adoption along the way so we may not be blood related to him despite him being there.

    You have possibly changed my 2024 life… TBD. I added almost all of these to a wish list and also plan to read way more indie books this year. Why is it that the BEST books are often indie?!!

    • @eyesonindie
      @eyesonindie  8 місяців тому

      Sometimes I despair a little when I hear about an amazing book published by a big corporate publisher, because I think, "I want to read that but I don't have time with everything I want to fit on my channel!" And I worry that I've boxed myself in a little. But then I remind myself the huge list of amazing sounding books that are from indie presses, and remind myself no one can read everything... and I feel better. I can't wait to see if you find any new fave books from indie presses this year!!

    I tried reading Lost Journals and may need to try audio and let the words wash over me. The Parisian has been on my list forever. This year?????

    • @eyesonindie
      @eyesonindie  8 місяців тому

      Audio is an interesting idea for Lost Journals! I definitely needed to let go the part of my brain that wanted to perfectly understand every word or description. I hate to admit this, but the Parisian taught me SOOOO much about that period in history.
