I actually had this and the portable as a child and my parents enjoyed me playing it because they thought other video games were violent and they didn't want their daughter to suffer. I usually played it with the volume down because I was embarrassed. My parents actually would WATCH me play it and cheer me on to specifically embarrass me. These games were on physical cartridges and there was a compartment on the system that fit up to 8 cartridges in them (2 rows, 4 cartridges per game). I played the shit out of Shrek 3, Alphabet Park Adventure, Noddy, Dora, and Cinderella. I experienced evisceral joy every birthday I got a new one. It was actually really good for the demographic and I got cracked as hell at platformers.
Unironically I learned more from regular video games than I did from the V-Smile. The V-Smile didn't teach me to read, Zelda did. The V-Smile didn't teach me to do math, Paper Mario did. The V-Smile didn't teach me about George W Bush's propaganda machine and America's bloodlust for oil, Guitar Hero: World Tour did.
These things can actually be worse for a child's learning because they gate skill development to such low levels. Kids who had Leapfrogs were worse at language skills for example because nobody in real life uses such simple sentence structure and short words so regularly. In real life kids are exposed to a variety of different vocabularies, dialects, and contexts that span from grunting like an ape to explaining ego death in precise language. Meanwhile those toys isolate each individual facet, pare them down as much as possible, and prevent them from interacting. You can't divorce teaching a skill from using a skill the way so many "childhood development toys" end up doing.

I mean, Educational Series like Reader Rabbit, JumpStart, The LeapFrog learning toys of the past (including the Leapster and other devices) and even educational games based on Licensed Properties were all quite magical, and they had a charm that you don’t see in newer educational games released nowadays... Heck, even the V-Smile was quite magical too, even if I didn’t play it!
Some even featured Charles Martinet as a voice actor too! You know, the voice of Mario, Fowl Mouth (Cel Damage), that big-ol dragon from Skyrim, and more recently, a Dragon Ball character! Yeah, he actually played a voice in some educational games!
