  • The Ballermann on Mallorca is the stuff of legend - in Germany, at least. The word refers to a section of beach on the Balearic island stereotypically frequented by Germans - some of them behaving badly. For the locals, this kind of tourism has been problematic for a while, defining the island's reputation as a place to party - and not much else besides.
DW's Lukas Stege visits the Ballermann - but not just that. After all, off-season, the island has much more to offer than just parties, palm trees and beaches: culture, nature and restful tranquility.

I loved how you showed that Mallorca is not only a place to get wasted in summer. Sadly, this year is set to be the first "normal" one after the pandemic but it seems we go back the tourism of alcohol with all this places like Megapark or "Schinkenstrasse" reopening again. I agree that you can have fun and drink here in Mallorca but always respecting the enviroment and the local people and that has been the problem years back. I hope we can create a sustainable tourism in the future and not depending only in summer season.

Unless u live there that tourism doesn't even affect u, it's literally just two towns, you talk as if it was an island wide problem, unless I specifically go to Magaluf I don't witness any of that "normal tourism" you talk about. I experience crowded beaches and cyclists, thats the actual normal tourism, not an epidemic of drunks. Most tourists do what the video has shown and you talk as if that was a minority of them.

After COVID-19 and Spain opening up again I forgot how huge tourism is in Spain. I live in Valencia and I do have to say it's a bit overwhelming for us locals having people over all the time waiting in long queues for most things people misbehaving etc and the language barrier I know your on vacation but please try to know ur basics in Spanish! And don't get mad if Spanish people don't know or want to speak English to u! It's Spain we speak Spanish simple as that. In general tho Spain is extremely welcoming 😊

Good video. Weather is usually unstable until Easter and becomes more stable and consistentlyl sunny in May or June. This year, the weather has been pretty awful during March and now continuing into April, though it might improve in a week or so according to the forecast. The boozy party mile could be erased entirely, but it isn´t because it makes a lot of money. Excesssive drinking has been not just allowed, but actively encouraged for years. What this lady at the Ballerman is saying is disingenuous. The island could function very well without these establishments that encourage excessive drinking and make a lot of money from doing so.
With regards to tourism having skewed the society in Mallorca, that is absolutely true. There has been far too much greed in the past five to ten years especially. It´s become all about getting as much foreign cash as possible in the summer and then closing up shop and doing essentially nothing all winter (five to six months). This has affected availability of jobs, affordable housing, and means that it is pretty dead in winter when the majority of hotels and many shops and other venues are closed. It has also affected people´s attitudes and there has been a normalization of disrespect in all spheres of society including the dangerous driving on the roads and dangerous parking as well.

  • @Mikolavic

I guess it was too much to ask to mention that some of the problems brought by mass tourism are an upward pressure on rents for locals, who can no longer afford to live near where they work, or an excess of low-paid hospitality jobs that limit the resilience of the local economy. Put these two things together and you get the working poor, who can't live on their salaries. It is not about not welcoming this or that nationality, it is about an economic model that does not support the kind of society that we would like to be.

I have been living in Mallorca for the past 20 years and I must say you should most definitely give it a go. Yes Playa de Palma and other touristy areas can be a nightmare, but as an independent-minded traveller myself who usually backpacks all over the world I must say Mallorca and the Balearics have some of the most gorgeous, unspoilt destinations in Europe. Try Mallorca's Tramuntana range, places like Sóller, Deia and Banyalbufar, Alcudia... the other more quieter islands such as Formentera and Menorca... stunning scenery, accesible, great local food... there is a lot to be discovered in spite of mass tourism.

I usually see northern European tourists go around in masses and being just practical, but to establish own traditional culture through big communities like traditional beer halls , names and making it virtually speaking its language written up at the same time is really unusual.
Germans especially bavarians care about their own rich grand tradition. Compared to an dutch and English tourist they dont really care take their own culture as a hierarchical establishment . And yet germans can really just be as travel happy. Unlike Spaniards Italians or French who stay either home or just travel without such aggressive common marketing mindset. Or it has to be so very elite minded if to operate .
German culture is rather unique on that aspect.

I live here, and the problem with mass tourism is worst than what people think. Pre pandemic it was just chaos, planes were landing every minute at the airport non stop for 7 days a week, all rentals cars were fully booked, thousands of cars on the road made traffic just insane. The pandemic as bad as it may have been, made many people in Mallorca realise how important it is to limit tourism on the island, the environmental impact was just terrible. You literally couldn’t go on a beach without having there massive tourists storming it. During pandemic, beaches were deserted and made them beautiful and relaxing as they should have been. I am afraid that the 2 years of peaceful living are gonna be over soon.

"Where Germans like to drink and party". As a title, and I'm from Mallorca, I think it's disrespectful, knowing that Mallorca is not only that. We have a beautiful culture, a beautiful language (catalan), and heavy tourism is killing our island, also due to the bad politics who let despoil our land, constructing, constructing, constructing... If you come to Mallorca, don't go just to typical places. Learn just the basics of the language and support local factories. And now, I'll see the video, may be I'm wrong, but I wanted to make it clear...

tourists have to understand that they are guests on the island, not the overlords of the residents. so shame on those, particularly Germans who are quite picky about what tourists do in their own country, who would trample on the cultural traditions of the people and their island, treating it as if they can trash its beauty and its environmental integrity with impunity, and all because they carry loads of cash or have credit cards.
