I did Striding Edge for the first time this year. As someone who is terrified of heights, I'd asked a local mountain guide friend (who lives in Glenridding) to guide me across for the first time. A few of us ventured across and we stumbled across a guy who was on one of the lower paths. One of my friends stopped to talk to him and handed him something. I was too focused on not having a panic attack, so wasn't fully paying attention. It wasn't until wed gone past him and I turned back to see what was going on and saw him in a squat position leaning against the ridge and he was....well....you know when you said you didn't soil yourself? This guy wasn't so lucky. We made it over Striding Edge and I was elated and stated for the entire weekend "I did Striding Edge AND I didn't sh*t myself".
I remember going over striding edge with my dad as a kid. Dreadful weather, slippy as hell, terrifying experience. One of the best things I've ever done.
You're becoming my favourite youtube channel. Easily the best footage and editing I've come across. Love the dramatic production style, nice ratio of talking/music. More like mini films than videos. You come across modest too, unlike some other youtubers with massive egos. Keep up the great work, hopefully bump into you on a fell next time you're in the Lakes
Hi Andy, thanks for the comment! Glad you're enjoying the videos and very glad you said they are like mini films. That's been my aim, I love editing dramatic sequences together in different styles and music so I try to break up the video like that. I'm a full-time commercial filmmaker so taking that approach to UA-cam, helps improve my commercial work. I just try and be me in my videos, I'm in my ancient 30s now so have given up trying to be cool a long time ago* 😂 (*I was never cool)
Great video of a beautiful location. If I had to run I doubt I would have gotten out of the camping ground. I saw the number of people on that ridge and thought its like Pitt Street, Sydney on a Saturday morning. Bumper to bumper. Thank you for sharing. Cheers mate.
Thanks John! Yeah was definitely busy up there, was about midday on a Saturday afternoon. Had originally planned to do at sunrise, but the weather was rubbish in the morning so waited for it to clear.
Being a native from NI and live in MCR I go to the Peak District quite a lot if you get a chance do some walks there they are excellent 👌 love your videos around the mournes gives me inspiration when I’m home to do some walks keep up the great work 😊😊
Great video. We have just moved near the Lake District so we are going to work our way through the wainwrights so I’ll be doing Helvellyn at some point. I’d love to say I’d done striding edge but I hate heights so I’m not sure I’d be able to!
Thanks Marie. This probably makes striding ridge look worse than it is. Definitely is scary in places, but also some of the worst bits can be bypassed on a lower trail
Very good Stephen. I was up there Thursday morning Stephen, but left Glenridding at 4:30 am to avoid the hoards. Result, saw 2 people before the summit and one of those had wild camped on Birkhouse Moor. You captured some great angles and perspective. Much more exciting than my simple video. One thing though, I find the frequent perspective switches a bit disorientating. Ultra wide, to zoom, to POV, to drone all in one flow. Just my perspective and I know you put at a LOT of effort into capturing all of those angles, just might be too much of a good thing sometimes.
Thanks for the comment Dave! I had originally planned on heading up at a similar time and avoiding people, but it was completely clouded over in the morning, hence the later start. I actually climbed up Birkhouse Moor the evening before to capture some additional landscape footage and only saw 2 people. Thanks for the feedback on the different kinds of footage, I guess I tend to edit for people who like me have very short attention spans and that can result in quite a lot of fast cuts.
Looks like you are having an amazing time in the Lake District! How does it compare to the mournes?. You may hurry back home , you are running out of hill and dale races to qualify for the souvenir jacket! lol
Thanks Michael, I've actually been back a couple of weeks, just spreading the edits out the videos out. I've now officially missed on on my H&D jacket though. Was sick last week and had to miss the race even though I signed up and I'm away net week so the most I'll manage now is 5.
I did this as a 15yr old with my bro and a mate - was foggy. I remember jumping with a v heavy rucksack from one rock across a gap - then the momentum of my rucksack as I landed pushed me forward and I nearly fell off...shat myself a tiny bit I don't mind admitting:)
@@StephenJReid that's the thing about the lake district - can be sunny one minute - you look down to find your sandwich in your rucksack, look back up and can't see a thing. It wasn't too bad tho that time.
Haha, well on Saturday afternoon anyway, I'd imagine it's very quiet early morning or mid week. Mach loop eh, I am planning something for Wales possibly later in the year.
This place looks amazing, but this is what puts me off going to places like this. They are always very busy and I hate the idea of queing to climb over a mountain - I always think of mountains as places of solitude!
This was midday on a Saturday. Which wasn’t my original plan, I had planned to do it mid week at sunrise but the weather didn’t play ball. The area was much quieter during the week, also it wasn’t peak holiday season
@@StephenJReid ah I had a feeling you did this during a busy time and from lighting it looked like midday! It's very satisfying when you wake up early enough and get the place to yourself.
Great production as always -- but running? What about 'the views?' If I want to relax a bit I put on one of your crazy videos and am thankful it's you and not me racing over the countryside :-) These days I trek at a much more leisurely pace. Keep up the excellent work One of the best such channels on UA-cam. Best wishes Bruce aka Dr.T
@@StephenJReid 17 miles long mass exposure brutal descents…. Can I just add I was walking it not running this time…. Thankfully. How do I attach a photo to you??? #technophoabe
Yikes sounds epic! I can't do that distance at all in mountains currently. I'll be in Scotland in September doing a 35km/21mile mountain race, need to get my distance up. You could DM me on Instagram if you are on there @stephenjreid. Although I've googled some images on it too.
I did hear them say "she's been on harder climbs than this", so dunno. I'd say a well trained dog would handle this better than most people. But not sure I'd risk it myself.

Omg! I love watching Striding Edge videos but yours blew me away. Drone footage so you could really see it was amazing. Thanks so much x
Thanks! 🙂 put the effort in for this one, climbed most of the way twice to get all the footage!
Thank you for taking us through this awesome experience! It's as if we are following right beside you.

Epic. Song choice, scenery, banter mighty video.

Excellent 👌 job Stephen, nicely edited. If you’re ever in wales try Snowdon via Crib Goch. Similar to striding edge but even narrower and bigger drops
Thanks David 🙂 Am currently actually plotting something for Wales…

Stuff queuing for the descent hahah. you'll be there all day. There are other lines, the queue is just for the easiest.
There was a lower bypass that avoided this bit entirely, I think that would probably have been the easier option.
You really captured the beauty of helvellyn. I was right, this was going to be a good video haha.
Haha thanks Damien! Wish I had slightly more time on the day or had managed to do it at sunrise or sunset, but very pleased with the end result. 🙂
So Helvellyn is going the same way as mount Everest: traffic jams on the way up.
For Wales: go and have a look at the Mach Loop! :-)

Stephen, which chest rig do you use, any chance of a short review of it?

Think he means fast walk 😂
Mountain running is generally run the flats, fast walk the climbs and run the downs
