I also switched from CS to MIS. I started programming at 12, and for a while, I enjoyed it. But as I began to use it on a more professional level, I started to dislike my time programming. I rather work directly with systems, or as a project manager.
Yea same dude. I loved programming when I was younger, and I still do when it's my own project. But I realized after I got my associates in programming I actually dont want to do this daily. This is the perfect degree, you can do business, technology, or both like you said. Hell yea.

apply to UTD. they give out a bunch of scholarship. the itss program here is ranked pretty high. I'm not too sure how competitive it is, but utdallas is a great school for computer / IT side of things.

Hi, my son got ITS in Jindal business school UTD, it seems there is no MIS right now. But UH has MIS and my son got an admission in UH as well as we are living in Houston. When you say MIS in UTD, when did they remove MIS and changed to ITS(Information Technology Systems) and why.. Do you have an idea about MIS in UH, how is it?

ITS is UTD's information systems course. I'd recommend looking at the course catalog to compare universities than just the name of the course.

honestly that sounds like a great idea. I'm here at utd as well doing cs degree, what he's saying is right in terms of being geared towards software development. If you want to do cs minor, try to take at 2-3 intro to programming, 1 data structures & algorithm class, preferable 1 advanced data structures & algorithm classes, 1 database course, and discrete math. That will give you enough breadth to probably pass an interview (along with leetcode/hackerrank practice), but also a good enough understanding of programming to get working with some stuff. In addition to all of the other resources he mentioned, the intro courses at your university are good for taking people with little programming and laying a foundation. from there, you'd be surprised, a lot of the progression will happen on your own through your own work. Not everyone needs the chops to be a software engineer, data scientists code less than software engineers, as do data analysts, as do business intelligence analysts, and yet they all involve some level of programming. So getting a basic foundation is a good idea.

hi, someone I know is working for a large semi-conductor, probably the largest, and he's a computer engineer. so this is what i've gathered from him. computer engineering opens a lot of doors, the whole engineering side is open to them, on the electrical front, as well as software development. The market is competitive though so you probably need a masters. If you're going into chip design, your location options are kind of limited. If your in the us, it's austin,tx or silicon valley. Hardware is more competitive and has less jobs than software, so a lot of computer engineering majors end up as software developers. But that could also be embedded systems or lower-level things. Doing things like being a flight-systems software engineer or even real-time computing or distributed / hpc / parallel processing. MIS is probably growing more because of the wide availability. Nearly every medium-large company needs IT people. They need systems engineering people, business intelligence, technology consultants, technical salesmen / sales engineers, erp/crm larger systems people, network administrators, system administrators, database administrators, etc., there's a lot more breadth as to what MIS entails. It's really big. You can also transition into other sub-disciplines fairly easily, because MIS at it's core is a business degree with a focus in IT. So you'll learn the basics of accounting, finance, operations, etc, so that your skill set will be viable to pretty much every business. You could get another degree / masters in a discipline like finance or accounting or supply chain and probably find work in those sectors as well with relative ease comparatively to somebody without a business background; though a computer engineer / computer science person could also do that too, however, the business-side of things would be new to them and they'd be starting from scratch. MIS people can also transition to cs, however a computer engineering person would probably have an easier time doing so. The level of abstraction is deeper in CS rather than MIS, and CE shares courses with CS. You could probably transition into MIS after computer engineering though. The computer side of things would be probably simpler, from a physical perspective. There would less focus on the physics or the scientific / engineering reality of the systems at play, and more practical focus and applications of systems that are already built. But both of which are challenging professions and have their own difficulties, you gotta just figure out what you like more. As far as salary, it's a little shady on the MIS side because there's so much you can do, but if you're a computer engineer then you're probably making like $90k - 120k entry level (assuming masters probably) I would say in the us (at least in texas), in california you're probably making a lot more than that just because of living. For software development, it really depends on where your focus is, so for a basic software engineer I would say the average is like $60-80k for entry level that would be a good starting salary. Then for MIS, it ranges. I would say for the beginning or starting salary you should expect about that of a entry software engineer. But in the long run, for most positions, you probably won't make the same amount. So, software engineers can make like $100-130k with a few years experience on average. Whereas, someone like a business intelligence analyst, would probably max out at $90k-100k and you'd have to be really good and have a lot of experience, this probably wouldn't be the average either (this is for texas). For systems people, i'm not sure of how much they make. A lot of it too has to do with whether or not your self-employed. Like if you run your own IT company, you could very well make upwards of $200k per year. It all depends. As far as transitioning into software development from an MIS degree solely, I think its possible however the market for software development / engineers is very competitive too. So you'd be competing with the cs majors, which is fine that doesn't mean you can't be a software engineer. You'll just need to touch up on data structures and algorithms and practice whiteboarding questions and practice programming in your spare time and build side projects. But yeah, the most important thing I would say is finding out what you like better. What would you not mind doing for a living, learning about in your spare time, what are your values, do you mind relocating, etc. these are all questions you should be asking yourself. There is no 'one way' to become a software developer or any of the MIS professions I just mentioned. But for computer engineers, it's pretty set and standard that you will at the very least come from either computer engineering or electrical engineering, and 'maybe' in some cases physics but that would be at a phD level probably.
@@sahilkakkar5628 MIS generally has a different focus than software engineering or computer science. MIS is blended with business; you're focus will be constructing, maintaining, and fixing systems that have been built by engineers or purchased via 3rd party companies by a firm. Lately, it's also included a huge analytical portion as well. So, you'll probably take classes in SQL / data management / data governance / business analytics / python & R / and excel. CS will be more like an applied math degree; it will be abstract math, programming in java / c++, and learning about the stuff that makes up the software components to computers like operating systems, data bases, networks, etc. Software engineering is broad - but it's pretty specific too. You're literally building software. So, yeah you could go embedded or web development and those two skillsets would be entirely different, but in the basic abstract sense - they'd still be development. The focus is product creation. Data science and machine learning is a big world too. So there's the people who maintain and build the infrastructure to support big data, like data engineers and architects and these people could be computer science or MIS folks. Then there's data science - which is more statistics / ML / theoretical CS / Math heavy. There's like a duality between hardcore data science which would be cutting edge research / research scientist / machine learning engineer world - which would be phD level competition and research oriented. Then there's the more business-inclined data science folks, who still have advanced degrees, masters & phD's but aren't necessarily focusing on developing / proving / and researching cutting edge techniques. Then there's folks who use machine learning models, but aren't necessarily data scientists, and they are just implementing them in some language like python and might not need to be as statistics heavy and they're doing this to provide analytics. They say the data science trichotomy is math & stats / computer science / business or domain knowledge. It's multidisciplinary. As far as salaries, I think on average software developers probably make more than analysts, however, data scientists probably (?) make more than the average software developer; honestly, i'm not too sure on that. Because there are the high-paid california swe's that make a lot, a lot of that though too is because of high CoL. As far as data science vs MIS; I think MIS would be better suited for business intelligence positions for a couple reasons. First, business knowledge is valuable. You could be the most intelligent person in the room, but if you can't put things in a context that's relevant to the business, you're not useful. MIS will provide a foundation in business understanding then it will veer off and focus specifically on information systems. For most people in the business, minus developers, the technology that is the focus of information systems is more relevant. For example, finance / supply chain / accounting / marketing folks all probably use SQL. Database systems are a big focus in MIS. Architecting them, handling unstructured data, and providing analytical dashboards with the data is a big part of modern MIS programs. Data science-focused degrees tend to either focus on heavy statistics and math and or theoretical computer science, but could also include areas like physics, engineering, or natural sciences. You can't go wrong with either area, really. Both are needed and necessary. It just comes down to where your inclination is. If you are more quantatively inclined and potentially like abstract model thinking, then do a math / stat / cs / physics / engineering degree and try to focus on data science. If you aren't so much that, but still interested in computer systems, then do MIS.

Each program has their own requirements, even for major changes within the same university. You can reach out the CS advisors and learn more about the process. I remember if you wanted to go from MIS to CS for Undergrad at UTD, there was a minimum GPA requirement.

@@devikajalgaonkar3532 Computer Science is heavily based on programming. After being in it for 2 years I found that I wasn't interested in developing code as much as I was in other things. Information Systems goes into a variety of areas such as Networking, servers, databases, and programming. Personally I love computer networking and I like that I could learn different things in information systems rather than just focus on code.

For MIS, u actually don't need programming skills .....
There u only develop business, management and leadership skills along with some basic coding stuffs .....

Atharva Biyani depends on how you feel about the subjects. CS is a more technical degree with a heavier course/ workload, MIS is more of a fine mix between CS and business. You still learn how to program and code but not as in depth as a CS major. With an MIS degree you’ll also be incorporating soft and hard skills into your work. I cant say which is better than the other. However, CS majors tend to make higher salaries than an MIS major

MIS courses will usually be in the business school, so naturally lot more social environment to study in. That's something to keep in mind. Are you ready for the social and networking challenges it would bring? Personally I was looking for that, so this was a plus for me as I made the switch.

it will depend on the school, but there should be at least a couple courses that teach how to program in MIS. Other courses might cover additional topics related to technology, which could involve programming, but won't necessarily be "programming courses" as in the focus is to teach how to program. Rather they'll just assume that you can figure it out and then continue on with whatever the topic of that course is.
is MIS easier then CS?
I found it to be easier. You learn about a lot of topics. Building depth in those is left up to you. Elective courses can help with building depth too.
