I love this truck more and more every time I drive it. Fantastic quality and feels like a tank. You can keep the new tech everything is going to. I want knobs and proven reliability.

Thank you Scotty. i have a 2020 Tundra crew cab and was going to trade it in at three years but saw that I could not get the V8 and decided I will just keep mine until it hits 1m miles. Exactly for the reason of the V6 turbo. i can promise my V8 will still be running without issue while the turbos will start having issues when I consider mine just broken in
I've had a lot of cars and trucks over the past 45 years, including many Toyota's. I bought a 2021 4Runner Trail model in November 2020. While it may be archaic by modern standards, this thing is the best truck I've ever owned. I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off, which should be for a very long time.
I love bigger displacement V8s and V6s, but for the Tundras and Sequoias 19 mpg vs 13-14 mpg is a big deal, especially as Scotty says, gas prices are about to go through the roof.

When they put a 4 cyl turbo in the Land Cruiser, the 4Runner had no chance of not having one. I bought a 2023 4Runner last April when I retired for this very reason. It is my wife's daily driver and when she gets tired of it, it'll be my second (play) vehicle next to my 2020 Tundra with the V-8.
Just bought a 2023 4Runner 4x4 SR5, on January 21st. They were trying to get it off a lot and make room for the 2024 coming in. I got it for $43,308 out the door. I felt like I got a good deal on it. Sold my 2004 4Runner SR5 and it was still running fine but wanted to get one last “new” one before they changed motor.
The prices are crazy, I've bough a 2017 TRD Pro Tacoma brand new, the cement color one, at the time I paid 40k even out the door, I remember a PRO 4Runner was around what you paid for your base SR5, that's just wild. Nothing has changed in 2024 models over the past 7 years to justify $10K. They got heated steering wheels now and power seats, thats doesn't cost 10 grand even with inflation.
Replacing a naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engine with an inline turbo 4 cylinder and saying you get the same fuel economy under real world driving conditions is like putting in $0.50 cents into a machine and magically getting back a dollar 😆. It's just not going to happen. On paper for CAFE numbers it works great but this is going to hurt the people that buy these things down the road. Will they last?? Sure. Will they last as long as a naturally aspirated 6 cylinder?? Nope.
@@GXMAN16well said, was about to say the same as well. Even Fortuner, Prado, Hilux is using the same 4 cylinder Turbo platform. American's are still having it easy with the bigger engines that they get. SEA, Africa, Australia are using the 4 cylinder Turbo.
I bought a 2022 highlander new in 2022 and little did I know that was the last year of the V6 . I was getting the oil changed recently and the salesman asked me if I’d be interested in trading it on on a 2024 and I said no way ! I wouldn’t have bought this highlander if it would’ve had the 2.5 liter turbo . He said oh they have more power and they’ll surprise you . Surprise is when it blows up after 100-150 k from hauling a big boat around . No thanks , I won’t ever buy one again .
I sold all my American junk cars a few years ago and bought a 2021 4Runner TRD, 2021 Tacoma TRD and a 2017 Avalon. I change oil religiously so therefore I'm set for the next 15 years!
Yep. Have a 5.7 V8 Tundra. Will drive it forever. And if the body ever rusts away, I will put the engine and transmission in something else and keep it going!
We bought a 2015 4 runner Trail premium new. Has 100k on it no problems. we surprisingly get 26MPG on the highway. Probably wouldn't have bought it if I knew it had the cartridge filter. I do most of the maintenance myself like brakes tune ups oil changes. I changed the oil 2x second time got the wrench stuck on the end of the plastic filter cover. Went the dealer for a recall congratulated them for making the first vehicle that I refuse to work on. Thought about buying the adapter you had a video on but also needed a different skid plate for clearence and would be about $500. Know have a friend who owns a garage change the oil.
I’m looking at buying 4 different vehicles. 2006-2011 Toyota RAV4 2006-2011, Honda CRV 2007-2011 Honda Fit 2005-2009 Toyota Matrix I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Where it gets really cold during the winter time. I understand SUVs are different than cars. I’m looking for the most reliable vehicle that will last me during the winter and a vehicle that won’t cost a lot to maintain when parts break down. What would you buy for a vehicle that’s going to last the longest and run great in cold weather?
Since you live in snowy place, the best ones in snow are Audi, VW, Subaru, Acura. These drive like cars and auto transferring power to required wheels..... If you need truck like then 4runner which you have to manually switch to 4wheel high.
I bought a used low-mileage 2012 RAV 4, V6, 4wd, and I LOVE it! I drive it like a truck....as my daily driver...to occasionally tow a 2,500 lb. trailer...to pull up a couple tree stumps...and to pass with authority on the highway. When I'm not towing, it averages 21-22 mpg, which, for its multipurpose capability, is fine with me. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is that stupid oil filter canister! It's messy and a significant waste of time every oil change!
My kids Corolla has one of those idiotic oil filter cartridges. I use more paper towels to change the oil because of that. It is impossible to not make a mess when changing the oil.
Buy Amsoil Signature, get an Amsoil oil filter. Have the dealer change the oil. Just check it and top off if need be. The second alternative is Mobil 1 extended performance with a Mobil 1 oil filter. Do the same checking oil and topping off if need be. I’m running Mobil 1 in a 2018 RAV4 hybrid. I change out the oil at 15,000 miles. Doesn’t consume oil.
I have to say that the 2005 4-Runner that I used to have was probably my favorite vehicle that I've ever owned! I would have kept it for a lot longer except that I discovered the frame had rot holes and the transmission cooling line rotted a hole in it by 2015. I traded it in with only 75K miles for a Rav-4 since the new 4-Runners that year were much larger and I really didn't meed more space. It had a 6 cylinder with a lot of power! I'd get a kick out of stopping at a light with some kid next to me in a little, small sh^i box revving up like he was gonna leave me in the dust. The light turns green, and without hardly any effort he was way back there loud and getting farther behind! 😅
Great video. But many "automotive journalists" expect the 2025 4Runner to have the same 4 cylinder options as the 2024 Tacoma (with and without hybrid).
Was hoping they would Enhance the 4Runner current V6 with a hybrid model. They did BUT, its in the Lexus TX 550h. 30mpg with a Combined 404hp & 33 miles EV capability for short trips.
The 3.0 liter V-6 in the early 4Runners were infamous for blown head gaskets. Mine went at 60k miles. The EFI shorted out the same year. The 3.4 liter in my 97 Tacoma was a big improvement. I wish you could still get a normally aspirated 4cyl regular cab Tacoma with a Manuel. That is a setup that would last.
I don't know about that but if the engine is a 4 cylinder it needs a bigger displacement (if I'm not mistaken to get mo powwa) without the need of Turbo. NA cars tend to be slow overtime imo.
I would like you to have a secondary channel about the videos you upload but dubbed into Spanish, it would be of great help to the Latin community, your knowledge is worth gold
The way things are going they are going from V-8s to twin turbo or hybrid V-6s, then to turbo fours. I figure soon they will go from turbo fours to twin turbo threes with astronomical boost. Blown head gaskets and burning oil before 50,000 miles will be the standard.
I had one a 2022 TRD Off Road Premium in Lunar Rock. I bought it in October 2021. I was doing Uber/Lyft and couldn’t afford the 12mpg with $3.86/gallon gas prices. I just (27Jan2024) bought a Tacoma V6 TRD Off Road Access Cab because I don’t need the back seat room and like the aesthetic better and the 2024 Tacoma is going back to the Xtra Cab. If I buy another SUV it’ll be a Lexus GX 460 since it will be gently used unlike a 4Runner.
Unfortunately I don't think the car industry will ever be going back to these cars that could run forever, its just way more profitable for them to make cars that die every 5 years or so and you have the replace them. Just like what Apple does with the iPhone.
My 4 runner is an 18... Love it...... Not to mention the 6th gen Runner they're eliminating the power rear window.. that's the staple of 4Runnee... I'm pissed at that
Got my 2019 Toyota Corolla. I’m a happy camper because I don’t take it off roading, I take to work, run errands etc. knock on wood, but im just saying, I see SO MANY Toyotas that are NEVER on the side of the road.
Scott please comment on second generation. Toyota Sequoia. I traded in a 2011 tundra for a 2020 certified pre-owned sequoia. I went to the dealer to test drive a new 2022 Tundra but left with the sequoia after test driving it an realizing in the 11 years with the pickup I had only towed a trailer once and only hauled stuff 5 times. I can sleep in the back of the sequoia when I go fishing and rent a trailer from haul if I need to haul junk. I have gotten 19/20 mpg on the Highway in my Sequoia. I love my 5.7 engine.
For towing in the smaller trucks, Hybrid AWD could make up for the turbo, but there's really no substitute for a V8 in a Tundra unless they did a supercharged V6. I don't think I've ever seen true 4WD combined with Hybrid AWD before though.
No air bags, no ABS, no electric windows, no gizmos, less chips and the car could be built cheaper and be more reliable. You can't beat simple diesel turbo like the 2.8 ltr 4 cylinder diesel in the Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck and the Fortuner SUV.
I remember when they first announced the creation of the airbag. It was developed to protect people who refuse to wear their seatbelt. So, conversely, if you wear your seatbelt, you don’t need the damn airbag. I don’t really like airbags. I like to to wear my seatbelt instead. If you rely on an airbag and a sensor fails, then what? And further insurance companies have a policy of totaling vehicles when the airbags go off, so a little fender bender could conceivably cost you your brand new car
And half the hooptie vehicles I've had in the past have had airbag system issues anyway (airbag light on) 🤣 but they otherwise still drove safely and comfortably enough, all that matters to me
2015 LTD, bought new, coming up on 200k miles. Had to do a transmission flush at 140k miles as it was hesitating in the 40 mph range as it accelerated. The front door lock actuators do not work. Im on my third one for the driver side and 2nd one on the passenger side. One of the parking sonar nodes has not worked for a while and gives me a fault when I turn it on. And the clearcoat is completely crazed on the roof and is started to do the same on the hood. Through all of this is actually drives the same as it did off the showroom floor. Is there a solution for the clearcoat that doesnt involve a complete repaint?
Hey, Scotty, me again just wanted to keep bugging and ask if you watch king of the Hill. There’s an episode where Hank’s truck breaks down, and the mechanic tells him to just trash it. Being a pretty simple truck I don’t understand why Hank couldn’t just fix it. Have you seen the episode and if so do you know what was wrong with it? And was it actually fixable or was it really too expensive to fix?
the buggers have just done the same in Oz with our beloved 70 series was a 6cyl diesel then upgraded to a v8 diesel fantastic and now have decided to put the hilux 4cyl in it I'll give it 12months and the phase will be gone fingers 3:47 crossed anyway
I totally agree with you I don’t think they should get rid of the v6 and V8 engines either! I don’t think it has anything to do with fuel mileage, but they have to change to be compliant with the stupid government emissions standards.
Scotty, you seem to love Toyota's, When I was looking for a HD Truck to tow my trailers. I couldn't find any information about Toyota's trucks that was comparable to a F-250 Ford or 2500 Chevrolet. Does Toyota sell any trucks that have the same/similar/comparable towing / hauling capacity as a 3/4 ton Chevrolet or Ford Truck or are Toyota just into smaller trucks. Thank You!
I''ll never understand why car companies don't use their fans to their advantage? Toyota KNOWS their fans want to keep the NA V6/8 versions of these vehicles, just like Ford knows that about the Mustang's. Instead of just quietly dropping the beloved power trains, point to the politicians and legislations that are FORCING you to drop them. Let your fans fight for you! Don't just cower and bend the knee!
I wish I had gotten a 1996 4x4 4cylinder Manual 4Runner back in college instead of my 1996 Honda Accord manual (good car nonetheless). I would still have that vehicle I bet.
If we're going back to 4 cylinders... just resurrect the 22RE - another one of those engines that not only lasts into the next generation, but relatively easy to fix/rebuild. But if it's 6 cyl they want, and we want torque... its time for an updated straight 6. Poly-quad heads are a must.
I bought a new 2024 Honda Accord it has a turbo 4 cylinder, that’s the only engine that comes with it. I’m still a fan of the Accord but….I wished they still offered/had the bigger 2.0 naturally aspirated 4 banger in it cuz I had one in my 2016 Accord and that motor was truly bullet proof. I’m just not a fan of a turbo motor in a daily driver.
I haven’t heard many good things about this turbo motor. My mechanic said to dump oil every 5k and run with ethanol free gasoline and he said it will delay a lot of issue that may happen.
I gave up with small cars and have bought a Lexus rx450 h with 3.5 v6. Proven reliability and quality. I have accepted the mpg, but find it manageable.
The more Scotty talks about these new vehicles they’re putting out the more I want to hang onto my 1987, Land Rover 90. It’s kind of Spartan inside, but it is easy to work on and I can fix almost everything in there.
I wish they would have the 2025 4Runner with the same engine but maybe an upgraded transmission maybe 8 or 10 speed if they want some better fuels economy. But I love the 4Runner the way it is anyways
I bought a brand new 2022 4Runner. Paid ii off early. I bought it specifically because I knew Toyota was gonna go with the Turbo on the 6th gen. Eventually illl have to cave and get the new crappy government mandated vehicles. But it will be 20-25 years before I do😂

Nope.
Turbodiesel hiluxes have been running strong for years now, no need to be afraid of Toyotas turbo engines.
They being bisses eventhough they know its only crap they make the downfall of toyota started from rav 4 ditching the v6
Which model year of highlander has V6? Does Highlander hybrid too have V6?
Don't mind the filter, but taking the skidplate off to access it is a royal pita$$. A simple access panel like at the drain plug would have been nice.
I sold all my American junk cars a few years ago and bought a 2021 4Runner TRD, 2021 Tacoma TRD and a 2017 Avalon. I change oil religiously so therefore I'm set for the next 15 years!
What junk American cars did you have, also what about American cars from the 50s, 60s, and early 70s?
2006-2011 Toyota RAV4
2006-2011, Honda CRV
2007-2011 Honda Fit
2005-2009 Toyota Matrix
I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
4th gen 4runner
Since you live in snowy place, the best ones in snow are Audi, VW, Subaru, Acura. These drive like cars and auto transferring power to required wheels..... If you need truck like then 4runner which you have to manually switch to 4wheel high.
I hope Toyota sees this. I wish they’d listen to Scotty!
Exactly mate, to me it's V8 or nothing, I bet this 4Runner will outlast any overpriced Ecoboost truck with ease by a massive shot.
Have a 2017 Tacoma Off Road and I HATE those oil filter housings too! Like a solution to a nonexistent problem. 🤦🏻♂️
They have a filter adapter that you can buy that converts it to take a spin on oil filter.. you can goggle it ..
There's an update to the plastic housing. Toyota makes a metal housing for the filter
Awesome video Scotty, we have a 2023 Toyota 4Runner with a 4.0L V6 and man we love it.
I have a 06 4Runner for a winter vehicle and it looks new. Never any issues. Great vehicle.🙏
What about the rust issues that the 4 runner has?
I thought Scotty had a ( video) it was a online kit to change it back to the old way
Buy Amsoil Signature, get an Amsoil oil filter.
We like our 2021 4runner. Wife doesn't drive much so I get to drive her 4runner and my 2016 Tundra SR5 4x4. Swap every week.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
My 2014 4Runner gets 20mpg. Bulletproof, will drive it anywhere anytime
8:23 Google Maps calls this stretch of road: Scotty Kilmer Dragstrip
I’m obsessed with my 40th Anniversary 2023 Black Fire Breathing Dragon…Best purchase of my life
I would like you to have a secondary channel about the videos you upload but dubbed into Spanish, it would be of great help to the Latin community, your knowledge is worth gold
Was gonna wait for a 2025 4runner but guess not, thanks Scotty, I'll get a 2021.
I love my 4runner never will sell it. Its a baby 32k miles.
My 4 runner is an 18... Love it...... Not to mention the 6th gen Runner they're eliminating the power rear window.. that's the staple of 4Runnee... I'm pissed at that
New ones still have sliding rear glass
A 2021 is not affordable. I used to buy 5yr old cars. I can't afford them anymore. Now I just want to pay cash and be done with it.
Just bought a 2019 Highlander with the 3.5 naturally aspirated V6. Not interested in turbo.
My neighbor has a 2021 & bought it new. Don’t know the miles but he’s had zero issues.
I'm definitely going to get a 2024 4Runner. I just wish there were cooler colors like that Cavalry blue or voodoo blue
I’m biased, but underground is 🔥
Underground will likely have higher resale value later since its last for the 5th gen, pseudo Trd pro treatment
No substitution for displacement
Replacement
@@ML-lg4ky No alternative for displacement
Got my 2019 Toyota Corolla. I’m a happy camper because I don’t take it off roading, I take to work, run errands etc. knock on wood, but im just saying, I see SO MANY Toyotas that are NEVER on the side of the road.
I own a 2020 TRDORP, you can change out the plastic filter housing for a metal OEM Toyota filter housing, one of the best mods, your welcome :)
Same!! I bought a used 21 Platinum with 10k mikes
For towing in the smaller trucks, Hybrid AWD could make up for the turbo, but there's really no substitute for a V8 in a Tundra unless they did a supercharged V6. I don't think I've ever seen true 4WD combined with Hybrid AWD before though.
What happened to the electric turbo that was promised? I always drive on a dyno but habevLexus RX 350
Hi Scotty, loved all your videos, What do you think of high mileage Toyota land cruiser 200 series V8 and put supercharger in it?
Thanks for telling it like it is. I'd rather have my 4.7 liter in my 2006 Tundra than any dual turbo in a new Tundra.
And half the hooptie vehicles I've had in the past have had airbag system issues anyway (airbag light on) 🤣
but they otherwise still drove safely and comfortably enough, all that matters to me
2015 LTD, bought new, coming up on 200k miles.
My wife has one. I do an oil change once a year before the inspection. Zero issues. She loves it.
They should make them v8 instead.😅 the TRD 4runner is going to be my next vehicle when the time comes to replace my ultra reliable 07 Honda pilot.
Imagine Scotty waving his hands around while holding those gymnastic ribbons!🤔🤔😁
Hey Scotty, I hear those V6s in the 4runner only get 17 mpg on average. I don't think that's good gas mileage.
2000 3rd Gen Limited 4x4 with E-locker. Will never get rid of it.
I wish I had gotten a 1996 4x4 4cylinder Manual 4Runner back in college instead of my 1996 Honda Accord manual (good car nonetheless). I would still have that vehicle I bet.
Thanks Scotty for increasing the value of my 23 TRD Pro 4Runner Solar Octane. Even though, I will never sell it.
I have been waiting for 4 years for the redesign 4Runner I’m going for it I waited to long. Plus with all the modern upgrades I want.
I’m just not a fan of a turbo motor in a daily driver.
change the oil frequently and dont overdo it.
Probably will burn oil.
@@timmy-wj2hc it will get oil dilution
They are having trouble with the 1.5 Accords blowing head gaskets between 60-80,000 miles.
I haven’t heard many good things about this turbo motor. My mechanic said to dump oil every 5k and run with ethanol free gasoline and he said it will delay a lot of issue that may happen.
The 4Runnner is the best 👌 👍 Unfortunately the MPG'S are really 👎 bad. 😮
Reliability > MPG
@@FreemasonshairThe V6 Highlander is almost as good as a 4Runner. Almost. 😂
@@lanesworld4000 almost, I’ll take the 5 speed and body on frame over the 6speed/8 speed unibody, especially over the 8 speed
@Freemasonshair 4Runner is the best! I never go off-road in the Highlander. Sport mode improves the 8 spd a lot.
I gave up with small cars and have bought a Lexus rx450 h with 3.5 v6. Proven reliability and quality. I have accepted the mpg, but find it manageable.
Scotty you are the best.💪 Greetings frm Poland.👍
There’s no replacement for displacement.
man I was looking at a really nice 2021 4runner, 54k miles. it’s not cheap but man it’s in beautiful condition and basically brand new
The more Scotty talks about these new vehicles they’re putting out the more I want to hang onto my 1987, Land Rover 90.
But it will be 20-25 years before I do😂
I bought the adapter that allows cartridge filters. Should i install it?
