  • A not so well known tune, from a not so well known movie called The Earthling from 1980. Regardless, a great song. It's sung by Maureen McGovern (best known for her 1974 hit “The Morning After” from the movie The Poseidon Adventure). For entertainment purposes only. No copyright infringement intended.

It's really touching that in real life Ricky Schroeder named one of his kids Holden after William Holden. 😇

Just watched the Earthling again for the first time in many years. Made me cry all over again. In Holden’s biography it said that he didn’t drink at all during the making of the movie because of Schroeder’s young age. They both indulged in ice cream instead and bonded closely.

Firstly, this is a beautiful & VASTLY underrated song from some 40 years ago now (perhaps because the movie wasn't very well received). And I'm pretty SURE the duo bonded, as yrs later, Schroder would name was first born son: Holden!

As a growing boy, William Holden was my hero, my role model and so much more. As an adult, I saw the Earthling and thought, "This is how he should end his career, strong, stoic, and concerned for others. It wasn't his last movie but to me, it always will be. I had searched for this recording for years. Thank you for posting such a lovely, piogant performance.

Ricky's performance was Oscar worthy, so was William Holden's, The other actors, not so much. Director, not so much. Ricky's parents, the pits, really yucky. That title song, I can't get out of my head for months after hearing it. Maureen McGovern, I love you. Love the movie even with the bad actors.

Maureen also recorded a version of the song on her own CD, Works of Heart, which appears to be much harder to find.

I had always wanted to see the movie "The Earthling" and finally did, just recently and it's true, a definite tear-jerker but worth each one! The song is lovely and I believed that when my mom heard it, she "let me" listen and we both fell in love with the song . With out the internet, we had a hard time trying to find out about the song or that it would have been easy if we just went to see the movie. Dad just wasn't interested in the movie so to him there wasn't any reason to see it. He was a dear man but both were children of the depression so if something wasn't a necessity, they rarely indulged in it. So Finally, I saw this movie. Thank you for uploading it. Mom passed last year and Dad 10 yeas before her. I think they both would have loved it as much as I did!

Thank you for sharing! This movie was one of the few foreign language movies I watched during my childhood in China. It left a profound impact on me: the people, the nature, the spirit. Back then I didn’t know yet that two decades later I would move to Australia and became her adopted child. This is a country with people of down to earth kindness, just as people in my mother land China. What I might say though is the indigenous spirit might have not been celebrated in the movie but Australia has come along a long way to create her own unique cultural identity with the blessings of her First Nation people, diverse immigrants and boundless landscape. I still have tears of gratitude listening to this song, knowing that I was half way to my other home then without realising. Thanks again.

You did a nice job converting the 45 Jerry, it sounds great to me. I can believe that about your fb posting. Most of what I see posted on fb is fake anyway. The people are not being real at all. This is a very real song performed by a very real lady, so it makes sense that it would not register with them. No problem Jerry, thanks again for posting. Maureen McGovern introduced this song at a telethon in early 1981, as I recall. I scrambled to record it from television immediately. Despite diligent searching (in a world without an Internet), I could not find the record. But persistence paid off eventually! McGovern has recorded it twice for later CD releases, but this original is only on the old 45, and in the movie itself. (The movie's audio mix is different, but seems to be the same recording.)
