    That carrier-type landing at the 6:05 mark shows the difference between Navy carrier aircraft and USAF aircraft landings i.e. - high sink rate (controlled crash) vs silky smooth sink rates.

    • @Mr51Caveman
      @Mr51Caveman Рік тому +1

      Actually there's no reason for Navy Ac to "Carrier" land an Ac on land as hard as they do. That's just poor training. Yes the Ac is designed to hard hit but again, not necessary.

    • @hifinsword
      @hifinsword Рік тому +5

      @@Mr51Caveman I'm not sure where that video was shot, but Navy pilots do a lot of those landings when getting ready to deploy. They have weeks of Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLPs) prior to doing it at the carrier. Once the daytime FCLP minimums are complete, then they do them at night. They have to get a minimum # of landings and are mandatory prior to landing on the ship. This landing could be an FCLP counting towards the minimum.

    • @jamesh.2271
      @jamesh.2271 Рік тому

      They know how to land light. But when you see them landing and taking off again… they are training for what would be Aircraft landings.
      There are lines painted on the runway to represent the arresting cables on the carrier and are monitored to see how well they are completing the task
      And in all honesty they don’t really do high angle landings anymore, unless it is at a time when things are very rushed with one plane landing right after another.
      Now it is much closer to a near level approach and then hit down at angle from a few feet above horizontal with the AC.
      The harder touchdown is when right above the arresting cables as it is a small area

    • @hifinsword
      @hifinsword Рік тому +1

      @@jamesh.2271 Unless things changed drastically since I was in the Navy, landing aboard aircraft carriers, they still must do carrier landings the same way. With the ACLS (Automatic Carrier Landing System) the computers can land the plane and catch a #3 wire every time, or a #2 wire on the latest carriers. The angle is set for a constant glideslope. They never varied during my time. The FCLPs (Field Carrier Landing Practices) are done with the lines painted and a Navy pilot can land softly when landing on a normal runway, not a floating one. But it's the same landing angle at the practice field as it is at the carrier if doing FCLPs.

      @@teddeebayre3433 Most people (often even
      engineering students and sometimes book authors) do not seem to know the difference. Many torque specifications are given in ft-lbf, not lbf-ft. This harkens back to the fact that torque is the cross product of the position vector first with the force vector second, thus many prefer ft-lbf for torque and lbf-ft for energy. And since work is force X distance (or better yet, the integral of force over distance) and has dimension of energy, lbf-ft could be argued as proper units of energy rather than ft-lbf. Of course in the metric system Newton-Meters are used for the dimension of torque while Joules replace the same unit, but represent the dimension of energy, work, etc.
