    That video, I hope you could see was an Upper Miss Valley Towboat going around Algiers Point northbound with a fairly small. Tow and he’s saying “come on girl, come on girl” referring to his boat trying to make the steer around one of the toughest corners on the LMRR. It just shows how much power is needed to do the job right. Jimmy

    Please explain how you steer the barges for a turn. Do you push the stern of the barges in a direction then straighten the helm and push in the new direction the barges are facing?

    • @marktwained

      Steer it just like you would a small boat. Propulsion in the rear.

    They probably were shooting NCIS: NEW ORLEANS. Back in the late '80's I was the engineer of the Jefferson & Cypress Bayou RR in Jefferson, TX when a movie was being shot downtown and I blew the whistle on the steam locomotive. The mayor came down and asked me to stop.

    Never heard the ship blow a horn at you. Is horn signaling still required on the river? Or does GPS take care of knowing where the traffic is going to pass?

    It’s a sight to be seen knowing how large your tow is only to have a container or cargo ship pass you like a speed boat.

    I was on a tow boat years ago when the port engine tripped out on overspeed. It took a minute or two before the engineer could get it back on, but we were just above a bridge on the upper Mississippi at the time and the captain didn't have enough control to miss one of the bridge pilings. After we hit the tow broke apart. There was a bend below the bridge with a couple of docks. One of them was hit and it looked like it exploded. I thought we were going to pile up on the bank, but a small harbor tug saw the problem and was able to help get things under control. What a mess that caused. I just had installed a new phone system on the bridge and the first call the captain had to make was to the USCG and the insurance company. I went on to work on ocean going ships and believe that I was on one of the Cape ships you showed down in NOLA.

    So how do you get used to switching around on different tows?

    • @marktwained
      @marktwained  6 років тому +2

      Not really an issue unless it’s going from 30 to larger. At those widths the increase in difficulty is way more noticeable

  • @tenbelow9617
    @tenbelow9617 3 роки тому

    The NOLA Riverwalk is a great place to watch the ships. The river bend then the bridge (Crecent City Connection). One ship lost power and crashed. At least they had the good sense to take out the Mall.

      River time is required by USCG, but doesn’t necessarily, although usually, require.

      Everyone, all good captains and pilots, start at the bottom and work their way up. When shit is hitting the fan you have to know everything about everything that’s going on because it all factors into your decision making.
