I don’t care how screwed and messed up my hometown is, if I’m offered a way out, I’m taking it and leaving for good and never coming back, but for Sweet he did the exact opposite because CJ literally offered him a better/wealthier lifestyle and yet he still wants to settle things in the Gang.
Some people cling heavily onto where they grow up even if it isn’t a good area. People like sweet are very frustrating because they try to hold everyone back . If you get to look for a better life they get angry at you for it .
I think the fact that he's the leader is why he feels so strong about staying there. Especially once you factor in what Smoke did.

There are so many times I wanted CJ to stand up for himself and actually explain properly to Sweet the things he did to help him, all the stuff he had to go through just to get him out.

What CJ did for toreno was basically extended black ops. He cannot tell sweet about them. If sweets gets to know at all, toreno will probably have sweet abducted and vanish into thin air. What's to say toreno wasn't watching carl even after Carl was done working for him

Being from the hood myself I grew up around a lot of people like Sweet. That stay put in the same place and have no interest in exploring the rest of the world. Couldn’t be me I joined the Army right after high school and got the opportunity to travel to several countries overseas and don’t regret it one single bit. There’s definitely more to life than your hood.
Is it because of lack of interest in exploring or is it loyalty and trying to preserve some sense of dignity when faced with overwhelming odds? Because I can relate to Sweet's idea. I'm Eastern European and I don't necessarily have an attachment to a neighbourhood, but I do have one towards my country. Even if I'd travel elsewhere, I could never leave it forever. I have an American friend who has suggested the possibility of me moving to the US (the visa process would be a hassle, but I could probably get one, I have 3 friends over there who could probably guarantee for me to the embassy)... But I know, I could never become a US citizen... I would feel like a fish out of water. It's not my land, my very presence there would feel unfair. And it would feel like betraying my country and giving up on it when it needs me the most, so I couldn't take that oath with a clean conscience. I don't blame those who left, but I couldn't do it. I go down with the ship.
I get that there might be more to life, but the country itself is more important than me. I have to work to fix it. And this mentality is indeed a sort of refuge, truth be told, I know that for someone in the West, my country is something to look down on, but even though we have little power or money... it feels like hanging on to some shred of dignity when you're not respected. We don't have the power of the West, but we have this: the land beneath our feet. It's not much, but it is ours. Yes, our flag isn't the easily recognisable and respectable star-spangled banner, but it's our blue-yellow-red tricolour. It's not much, but it is ours. I get the sense that for Sweet, it's similar. He feels disrespected by a hostile world, so he hangs on to the little things he has: the land beneath his feet and his colours.
@@octavianpopescu4776 Fair enough, speaking on the people I know personally, I think it’s an unwillingness to step out of their comfort zone as well as complacency. I decided to join the Army because I always wanted to travel and never saw myself living in my hometown for the rest of my life. There’s not much opportunity there, a large portion of the locals have low paying blue collar jobs, so it’s easy for the younger generation to resort to crime in attempt to get ahead in life. My family personally didn’t have a lot of money so they couldn’t afford to send me to college and I didn’t have the best grades or was a star athlete in high school so I didn’t exactly have many scholarship offers at my door. It was the best opportunity for me as far as stability, travel and further pursuing my education.
Not to say that there’s anything wrong with wanting to stay in your hometown. I completely understand your perspective and respect it. I still love my home regardless of all the negativity. You seem to know what your goals are and want you want out of life. Stay committed and one day you or those that come after will experience the work you put in to improve your community 💯

In my opinion, another example of Sweet's old school mind is when he buys the exact same Greenwood car, which was destroyed in the mission,' Reuniting the Families', when CJ could easily afford a much better car, and when asked about it, he just says don't fix if it is not damaged. I think the reason Rockstar made this vehicle mandatory to enter and not any other random vehicle, is to give us a hint of Sweet's character.

After replaying it I noticed how cj was a bit of a pushover everyone got him to do as he was told, like a dog, he also was a bit of a whinny baby
You're missing one crucial point. The reason Sweet treats CJ like that is because he never knew what CJ went through to get him out of prison,Toreno wouldn't allow CJ to tell the jobs he did for him to Sweet. Discretion is key in these situations,they're basically covert operations.
Even without the crazy Toreno jobs sweet knows Carl kept Kendle safe and he should know about Carl infiltrating and wiping out the loco syndicate . That got a lot of the drugs off the streets in Los Santos but never acknowledges cj for it .

Sweet’s desire to stay and fix things in the hood is actually very rich of him, he was offered a way out and still did the exact opposite of what most people would do. He annoyed CJ a lot, but he had a point and a great objective, imagine how much he, with his decisions and CJ’s balls, improved the lives of the residents of Grove Street by taking out drugs and Tempenny

Well CJ did most of the work. Sweet could’ve did something during those 5 years but didn’t. It wasn’t until CJ where things started turning around for the better.

I think its a wider social commentary on the hood.
Being an "egoist" and leaving like CJ or staying and trying to fix the hood like Sweet.
I also think that touches on how bad places like hoods are self-fulfilling prophecies - all the good, smart, driven people move away, so there is noone left to fix the mess.

I think there's another aspect to Sweet that isn't touched on much: he feels responsible for the hood, and he feels that if you enter the gang, you are responsible as well. Because if you're in a gang, especially the Families, you do what you do to help out the hood. And he thinks that if you leave the hood, you're leaving all the other people who are struggling behind, while staying and robbing people to get the money means actually contributing to the wellbeing of the people in the hood.
This is why he says "You're talking like smoke right now", and why he feels like he and his family can't leave Grove Street: as the leaders of the Families, it's their job to provide for their community, and no millionaire ever did that from the comfort of a mansion.
The thing about that is while his reasoning on paper is good. His method of carying out that goal is highly ineffective. He went a whole five years, stumbling over his “leadership” losing territory and watching as the crack epidemic took over before his brother came back and fixed everything by putting most of it on his back. He did not have any reliable way of seeing that dream come to fruition instead of what he should’ve done is actually do stuff to help his head from a different standpoint like buying a properties giving people opportunities if you don’t do that in the hood and it stays the way that it is then eventually people are gonna try to leave and seek out other opportunity
In Sweets mindset he is more vulnerable outside his hood when in reality he can live a much better life
True,in reality he is most vulnerable in the hood because every enemy knows where he's at,just like they already did try to murder him with the green sabre. In reality the ballas,vagos and the rest of the gangs are just lowlifes that live in crack houses and shitholes meanwhile CJ would've offered him a way better life

Yhhh its true i think w/ sweet its one of them ones where he rather go w/ the devil you know as oppose to the devil you don’t. He feels a lot safer in the hood because he knows the potential scenarios that could occur and is well aware of his surroundings. That’s why he’s still alive x well.

Yeah plus the dudes who don't wanna move out the hood don't wanna do so because they don't wanna leave others behind to suffer it's guilt for sure but if you don't have the people you loves back what do you really have?? @TheProfessional Sweet notices how CJ is changing big mansions cars etc. It's not about him it's about You/CJ. You/CJ went from normal person too scarface very fast. When CJ said big mansion this luxury it gave sweet impression that CJ is getting spoiled that materialism is getting to him
Yeah thats a good point. He was in jail the whole time and who is to say that Torrino (or whoever he sent) had an obligation to tell Sweet that it was all CJ.
It's supposed to be a covert operation from Torrino's end and it would probably make things worse if Sweet found out that CJ basically turned to the Feds for assistance. Even if he had no choice (which he didn't).
And if CJ did tell Sweet, there would had been no way to make the reasoning not sound like he cut a deal with the cops or betray The Grove as Sweet would say. Plus, Torrino or his superiors would had to kill CJ incase anything he did say could be linked back to them.
How long can you last with a permanent 5-6 star wanted level?
My suspicion rose during the homecoming mission. If you remember when sweet phoned carl when cj thrown into angel pine (i forgot the part, but i think the call happen between angel pine - san fierro part) sweet sounded like he already gave up on everything. Then after the mission outrider which toreno looked for cj's identification the next thing in "homecoming" is, sweet suddenly got his spirit (and temper) back! What a strange comeback! xD
@@PeninsulaCity2024 The thing is CJ didn't need to bring in the feds when discussing his attempts to bail Sweet out of jail. He could have just simply told Sweet that he made all the money from his business empires in San Fierro and Las Venturas, not to mention how he became Madd Dogg's manager in the first place. So there was really no reason for CJ to not explain what he did to bail Sweet out of jail.
Sweet's mentality is pretty easy to understand. He grew up in Grove Street, saw the rest of his siblings grow up in Grove Street, met most of his lifelong friends and fellow gang members in Grove Street. For him, it's home no questions asked. It might be a shitty place, but as far as he's concerned it could be a lot worse and wants to make sure it never does get to that point. And like you said, it's where the Johnson siblings mother came from and died in. Sweet already feels bad enough that she died in a hit & run clearly meant for him, he probably feels like he'd be abandoning her too if he ever left the area.
Not to mention that I don't think we've ever heard much of the Johnson siblings' father. Looking back on "The Introduction" video, CJ actually says he never knew his dad. If he isn't dead, then I can assume he might have ran away from his responsibilities as the patriarch of the family to do his own thing. If true, then it might be why Sweet is so against the idea of leaving Grove Street since he might think it'd make him no better than his dad.
There's also the fact that Sweet probably thinks like he'd turn into someone like Smoke or Tenpenny if he ever leaves. In a quote taken from Red Dead Redemption "Power is like drink. The more you have the more you want it. And there's few men who could handle it". Sweet's no doubt capable of becoming a success like CJ if he ever puts his mind to it, but he clearly doesn't want to go down that path likely because he thinks he'd lose his roots and become an even worse criminal than he already is and thinks CJ might end up that way too.
All that aside, there's the obvious fact that Sweet's just plain stubborn and too old-school to even think about trying something new outside of the Grove. CJ might have turned out the same if he never left for Liberty City and thus got a taste and experience for life outside.

late reply, but another factor for his attitude might be this: he never knew about everything CJ did for his sake. as far as he knows, after the incident that got him arrested, CJ ran away and left him to his fate, only coming back when he was released. the only thing CJ could provide him with directly in the meantime is reassuring phone calls. from sweets POV, CJ comes off as a fairweather friend who backs off when things get difficult

@@Underworlder5 Sweet knew CJ couldn’t be in LS, Sweet knew CJ was with Cesar protecting Kendl. Carl told him he was going to get him out of there, and he did.
Then, Sweet gets all mighty when Carl offers to buy him some clothes, just clothes and he gets pressed. He says his main responsibility is the hood and even asks CJ what he’s done for the hood, when it was CJ who single handedly recover the hood after Sweet’s dumb ass let it break apart. It’s Sweet’s fault that the GSF got like that in the first place, it’s his fault his best friends and second in command betrayed him right under his nose. CJ had to come and fix Sweet’s mistakes, and now Sweet thinks he has the right to recriminarte CJ for being successful and taking opportunities outside the hood.
Sweet knew he was a loser compared to CJ and he couldn’t stand that. CJ had everything so Sweet clung onto what he had to not feel as bad, he clung onto the hood as his last resort to feel like he was someone.
And Sweet is too dense to think outside of the box. Instead of thinking the casino could be an opportunity to help the hood, he rejects everything because he wants to do things his way. Sweet doesn’t care about the hood, all he cares about is being the one in charge.
Sweet is loyal, but his loyalties are in the wrong place, he’s a bad leader and without CJs help the hood is gonna come crumbling down again.
I don’t doubt CJ, Kendl and Cesar moves out of LS and kept their business, leaving Sweet to ruin the hood again. I think that’s why in GTA V the GSF are almost extinct, because Sweet ruined things again and CJ was too tired to come fix them.
I understand sweets mentality. I had a problem with that when I was in the hood. One day I got jumped along with allot of other kids.. when we were all done getting beat up, we all gathered up and made deep friendshipships and we made plans to return fire on them next time they hurt 1 of us. We started hanging out in dark areas and where people like us would get hurt to mark our territory.. we shot up places, under age drank, had a fight club, had ego problems etc. Because we were pretty much raising ourselves and our only inspiration were cheating moms and gangster dads.. If you picked on 1 of us, we would relentlessly make ur life hell as a group and risk our own lives. We already felt like we were risking our lives everyday just existing in a public space, and sometimes even inside our own homes with break ins and drive bys. so risking our lives for "something" or someone else made it feel allot better and somehow "safer". Standing for something made me feel like I had a purpose at the time. I wouldn't say that it was loyalty to a specific plot of land, but I felt a loyalty to the product of the environment. I felt like I needed to be there for the people who couldn't get out themselves, because there was allot of people like me who died there and didn't get lucky like I did. When I was a youngin I remember we had this tough guy mentality that if we are in a horrible situation then you MAKE it better. Like if you're broke - you work. if you're hungry - you hunt. If your environment is shit, you work to make that shit better. If ur neighbor is weak, you teach him to fight with u, if your neighbors on Crack, you stop Crack from getting there in the first place for the future children, if you're get rich, then you give like Akon did to Africa lol. Our natural tendencys growing up in an area where we are at a disadvantage (or not comfortable in the situation) is to RUN. People freeze, run away and never come back or hide forever. And IF you do that, then you are dead or atleast pretty much dead in our eyes.. So the reason we would look down on that "weakness" is to promote a strong mentality that will keep you alive. Its what we call "tough love". So that's what I think sweet is pretty much try to Carl on his comparison to big smoke. He's looking down on the "weak" mentality and saying that Carl and him are similar in that way. He's saying when things get hard, then they want to run away and find a better life rather than make it better themselves.
Although I see why that mentality is bad and how it can be misunderstood, I'm glad I had that mentality to keep me going through my parents not being there and growing up with a terminal illness (to wich I was supposed to die at 8 years old). Now that im in a better place and i love my family, I look back and just see that we were all just kids wanting to be happy.. we were fighting eachother and ourselves. A few people had something horrible happen to their lives and it spread like a disease. Just an endless cycle. I made peace with most of my demons. It sounds corny but its real.. the worst about my terminal disease is not that I cant stand up all the time, I can't follow my dreams without even bigger sacrifice, or that I'm in pain 24/7. But its living with myself knowing all these things.. its wanting to exercise the pain away and not being able to get up. It's feeling to stressed to sleep at night and too energized and angry at myself.. but anyway. Maybe no one knows what I'm talking about or this is too long to read so I'ma stop now lol

Keep in mind there's a difference between understanding why someone behaves this way and sympathizing with them. So while I do understand why Sweet behaved this way, I still can't sympathize with him, because he's very ungrateful towards CJ after his brother busted his ass trying to bail his stubborn ass out of prison, he's very hypocritical, and he unfairly compares CJ's ambitions to get out of the hood to Big Smoke selling the gang out for money even though they're nowhere remotely the same thing. And after everything CJ did for him, Sweet still calls him a perpetrator and claims CJ was doing everything for himself. So no. Sweet still deserves no sympathy for his ungratefulness and hypocrisy.
He's like one of those old school old heads who thinks there's nothing outside his neighbourhood.
The city sizes in gta are realistic to them because they haven't left that same radius in 6 years. Actually as I think about it all 3 cities in gta sa feel huge compared to the single city we got in gta 5
@@Huddy52 its probably because the fog so you can never see the whole city at once. But i have to agree even though all im pretty sure the San Andreas map can fit in the GTA 5 map it does feel bigger.

The problem is nobody asked how CJ was doing to help Sweet out of prison. Nobody's asking CJ's side of the story. CJ was pulling the Grove family together but he's just one man. But I guess Sweet was just too old school.
And even if they did, CJ can't answer about working for Toreno.

I always considered Sweet as the leader of the grove street families and I understood his position as leader and was never really angry at sweet, he has his way of seeing things and his life is focused on saving the grove from drugs that aint too bad
What I really hate Sweet for most is that Carl does manage to break out of that locked in mindset and can leave "the hood" behind him, but Sweet keeps pulling him back in and down to his level. It's because of people like him that gangs prevail and the "circle of violence" simply for being born in a certain area of a town continues.
Sweet is the person that made Families take back Grove Street and kill Big Smoke. If Sweet said: "Yes CJ, let's go to Las Venturas!", Grove Street would be under Ballas control forever. He is not that bad, he just cares about the gang he leads.

Sure Grove Street doesn't push drugs but they still follow the same gang mentality where beating someone up for "wearing the wrong colors" is acceptable and murder for anything they want is as well. I don't want to tout something like "morals" but any gang that operates that way is in the wrong, and pulling someone who managed to break out of that mentality back in is a dick move, and Sweet's entire mentality is that that nobody should ever leave it.
@@DanielKay06 Yes but if you leave a hood or a group of friends (especially when you are their leader) that you grew up with just because you can live wealthier somewhere else, you don't do the good thing. Loyalty is important, even in gang, you can not just leave people that like and trust you. I am not saying that Grove Street is better than Ballas (in fact, they are doing the same shit, maybe except drugs), but I think Grove Street members wouldn't approve Sweet going away from them.

Really I think the main reason why Sweet doesn't want to leave is because Grove Street IS all he knows and can do. He doesn't have a life outside it by his own choice, so of course he wants to keep everyone locked into his little circle because, frankly said, he's a loser who never managed to make anything else of his life than "gang boss"... and even at that he sucks :P

Not an old way of thinking but more of sweet’s POV everyone you grew up with is dying or hooked on crack and your closest friends and family does their best to abandon the place without trying to fix it yeah I’d be pissed off at everyone as well.
@@chamllis I'm glad you get it. He built everything in his home and CJ left once after Brian died and Sweet didn't know CJ was doing stuff to get him out. The way he just popped out saying everything he did outside of the Grove. The average person who goes through this game cares mainly about accruing wealth in the game. But it a question of what drives you to get up every day. Sweet wants to protect his home no matter one, lived in green, buried in green. CJ is about moving up. Notice that he came into town with just blue jeans and a wife beater. Its a clean slate. But throughout the game, he does his jobs and makes money outside the hood cause the hood ain't gon pay him.

You're right but in a way he might have felt that he can watch over him and Kendl. Cause remember their brother and their mother already died and their dad left them or already was dead I don't really don't about their dad but I guess Sweet doesn't want to lose what's left of his family. It's clear that yeah he gets mad of Cj for getting out of the hood but he's not really holding Cj back cause Cj himself decided not to argue with his brother and took back their hood from the Ballas just so he gets some love from him. I’m almost 23 now, & i’m still learning so much more about this game, when i thought i knew everything about this game already. & that’s why this game is my favorite game of all time. The developers did a phenomenal job with the game, from voice acting, to the detailed story line.

I still remember getting it on launch a little bit over 16 years ago. It is still the most complete GTA title (Story Mode only) to me largely because of the narrative, the variety of vehicles and mission,the three distinct cities as well as the little communities in between.
Sweet is tragedy of pride. He is too stubborn to admit he is wrong even when he has no problem admitting he is criminal. Of course he has relatable motives behind his bigotry and is able to change or at least understand other people changing. Interestingly Sweet's statement about Kendl's home being on Grove Street might imply that she is always welcome there as long as Sweet's around.

I think CJ definitely left after the end of the story. CJ is genuinely not interested in the hood anymore at that point, what he did in the last act of the game was really just for Sweet.

In the later missions we can see him being present in Madd Dogg's mansion alongside the others, and he also starts taking interest of who CJ was hanging around with back in his absence (like in the Riot Mission when Sweet asked CJ about Paul and Maccer).

Here's a theory of Sweet's behavior: He was just simply jealous of CJ deep down. When CJ bails him out of jail and explains everything he got after moving out of the hood, Sweet gets pissed because he feels insecure deep down. Because his younger brother accomplished so much more than what he accomplished for the hood, so in order to make himself feel better, he tries to prove himself as the bigger man by using that "keeping it real" excuse as a means to mask his envy towards CJ, and what better way to do that than drag his younger brother back into the ghetto life? So yeah. I think deep down, Sweet behaved this way because he was jealous of CJ.

Gotta say, that's not entirely true. He was tempted to smoke crack with some junkie chick near the end of the game and only stopped because CJ arrived in time. He admitted he'd might as well let it destroy him like it has the hood, and while it may seem like a low point in his arc it didn't mean he was beyond corruption. It would have been interesting to see Sweet go down this pathway at least initially, seeing that he has endured hardship (not to the same height as CJ) but it would expose a vulnerability behind his naive nature.

Sweet grew up as a person at the end of the game, he doesn’t see just the neighborhood anymore he accept Cesar as family, he sends CJ to aid Cesar, he spends time in the mansion and is proud of his brother and sister for what they did in San Fierro and Venturas but his persona always take care of the place he was born
Imagine an epilogue where sweet agrees to travel to San fierro or Las Venturas.. sweet goes proud of CJ's accomplishments, cj introduces sweet to woozie, or sweet also agrees to become a co owner of either the chop shop or the casino, while still maintaining his loyalty to the hood. Sweet would have even encouraged the other gsf members to experience life outside the hood while not letting it affect their loyalty, or cj could have helped the gsf members have legitimate income by employing them as guards in either his chop shop or the casino

I think that Sweet is mentally stuck to the hood, and that he doesn't feel (and he probably isn't) qualified to do anything else except blast. Also, the hood is the only place that he has power in. He would've felt powerless anywhere else, and also, he would've felt humiliated that his little brother is more powerful and successful than him.

I don't hate Sweet. Even when I was kid when this game came out, it was clear to me that he wasn't going to change his mind and thats fine. CJ was not his enemy despite their massive differences because if Sweet was really that mad at Carl, he would had taken him out.
In the end, CJ had to do whats best for him and Sweet ultimately just wanted CJ to stay loyal. Not necessarily to him or The Grove, but at least to his friends. It was in that scene where Cesar was asking for help during the riots where Sweet made it clear to CJ that is what he wanted all along - to keep his promises (his "debts") even though he was indirect about it. At least, thats how I saw it - A hint of respect and acceptance for CJ (and maybe Cesar too).
Although in a seperate universe, GTA 5 gave a general explanation in Hood Safari (if you left with Lamar) that all of the GSF members had eventually gotten out of the hood. If Sweet existed in the GTA 5 timeline (which might be possible since CJ does appear on a billboard in GTA 4), he would had died when the Ballas took over again or CJ swooped in and got him out of LS. Either way, GSF was erradicated by 2013.
That also makes sense as well by GTA 5 they would be in their 50s if still alive so I'm not surprised they probably left by then

Let's look at it from a different perspective. Sweet has an even older mentality where gangs are to help their community. If it weren't for Sweet, Grove would've been swimming in drugs since the beginning. So as the leader, you would never live it down abandoning an entire community that once lived decently under your wings. He doesn't treat Grove as a territory, he treats it as a family, a thing CJ doesn't get. Things can be better for the entire Grove but it takes thankless effort, which is what CJ couldn't accept.

That kinda makes sense. But I disagree with Sweet protecting the hood. Sweet is not a good leader. The hood was using crack for 5 years and it wasn’t until CJ returned when things started changing for the better. CJ took out the crack warehouses. CJ took back Grove street territory. CJ protected kendle, Sweet and his hood up to point where the hood drove him out and he still came back to help out. What did Sweet do? All he did was complain and belittle CJ for trying to better himself. Yes, Sweet wanted to get crack off the street but only because his way of living was threatened. He wanted to get it off the streets so they can return to their old way of living aka being poor and nonsense killing and robbing. He did nothing the past 5 years to improve his neighborhood and in the end blamed CJ for it.

Funny thing, yesterday I was wondering if CJ had the nerve to stand for Sweet, after all he did to save his brother's butt cavity. From working to C.R.A.S.H. killing government guys and all. CJ learned and you can see his character arc take many different ways, as he now had assets around the state, broke into mafia plays, became pilot, etc. If by doing it CJ could change Sean's mind.

Sweet actually prefers staying in the hood because that's where he grew up and probably its where he's gonna stay because all of his missions are all tied up to the Grove because he's their leader but since he got sent to a prison hospital cj had no choice but to look into other ways opportunities to survive and make sure Caesar and kendl safe its almost as if he wanted to get out of the hood because he regrets letting his brother Bryan die and leaving his childhood friends as well as his mom which is why he wants to do something better in the future to feel redeemed but sweet doesn't realize that because he sticks to his morals about staying close to the hood no matter the cost which is very selfish in a way because he didn't appreciate cj's hard work even though cj stole a military jet just to get his brother out of jail and yet sweet isn't great full because he thinks now that cj went full business man he's probably gonna end up like smoke and eventually forget about the hood all together.
Sweet didn't care about personal success. He wanted to see the entire hood succeed not just himself and his immediate family members.

I feel like Sweet is staying in the hood bc he wants to protect everyone in it. He is the leader, he cares about the people he's in charge of. Sweet may see CJ as not understanding what it's like to stick to your principles and that's why he's always so hostile. To be honest, CJ wanting to take Sweet and Kendl out of the hood is really kind of him, but it shows that he doesn't think about the bigger picture; everything is good for him but not everyone else. Sweet has a big brother mentality, meaning he thinks he's right a lot of the time, but it also means he is more parently to his homies and strives to take care of them. He is the leader, so maybe he sees himself as the Grove's big brother in general.
I think Sweet still cares deeply for CJ, he's just not that great at expressing it. A lot of people have this problem. Also you have to remember that Sweet has a lot to worry about, and he feels he has a responsibility to the Grove. If he left with CJ, it would be pretty much surrendered to CRASH. Sweet is rough around the edges but he is not a complete asshole. Also in the second-to-last mission, I think Sweet gains a little respect for Cesar because he hears him say that he wants to bring his gang back together and he wants to defend his own turf. Sweet would understand that and I think that’s when he finally realizes that Cesar isn’t that bad a dude--if he had just been more open-minded like his brother then maybe early on he would have taken a liking to him because he would have seen Cesar’s true principles. Unfortunately Sweet is stuck in his mindset, which I think is both a good and bad thing because it shows he has integrity but it prevents him from trying new things to improve. Like you said, he has that tradition mentality where they have to do things the old way, not considering outsiders for help. Personally I disagree with him on this but tbh I think he is the only one upholding that idea, ao maybe he feels he has an obligation to stay loyal to it. If Sweet no longer had that mindset, that mindset would forever be gone, and in society there needs to be more AND less favorable opinions for there to be a balance. I feel as if Sweet sticks to his guns because if he didn’t there could be a lack of order and things would get more crazy.
And this is not to say CJ is therefore worse by comparison; no, I think they both offer great perspectives and their differences really make the plot more interesting. It’s just that CJ was always the younger brother, always a little more naïve. He did what people asked him to and was very open-minded--if he wasn’t he wouldn’t have agreed to such dangerous missions all the time. CJ is a great main character, because the player by comparison to the situation is also a bit of an outsider, more naïve and is given less information to be aware of. CJ more than anything cares about his family, and wants to do things right. Sweet by comparison feels he has a responsibility to the hood, since it’s where he grew up. Imagine abandoning your principles, and a place where everything is really fucked up, for the sake of living a more carefree life--that is the dilemma Sweet faced, that was what he saw.
About Sweet’s treatment of Big Smoke--Sweet trusted Big Smoke because he was there all along, but he didn’t see it the way CJ did, because CJ backed away from the situation for five years and now knows that there can be traitors and bad ideas in people that you trust. Sweet cared about his hood, and cared about Big Smoke and Ryder too, because they were all good friends. He owes loyalty to them. He also probably didn’t have time to deal with Big Smoke, or look too deeply into his character. Sweet also probably thought that having someone to challenge his ideas was good in a way, but the reason he’s hostile to CJ about doing the same is that he thinks that CJ doesn’t understand a lot of what’s going on like BS does. The way I see it, Sweet was afraid of change, and that was what influenced a lot of what he thought and did. CJ confronted change, and that’s why they are different.
Then to address his double standard with OG Loc, I think you’re right about him being more of an outsider, but the advice he gives him shows that he cares about him and wants him to live happily. That is how Sweet treats his friends, and that interaction is really important because it shows how Sweet treats people he cares about that aren’t affiliated with the Grove.
This is not defending Sweet being cold to CJ, because I want more than anything for Sweet to thank his brother and for them to make up and be a happy family again. And I think if Sweet wanted to change the hood for the better, he should have listened to CJ more often because while he had different ideals, he also had a different perspective, which is really great to have especially for someone near the top that talks regularly to the leader. But Sweet is a good character, flush with principles and a great contrast to the main character. He is a good leader, stands his ground and does what he thinks is right. He has that older sibling mentality where he thinks his way is right but that also means he does what he does in everyone’s best interest and he really does care about his hood; that’s why he stands up against cocaine because he knows it tears the hood apart.
Yes, Sweet is bone-headed, but like you said that makes him incorruptible and strong. BS and Ryder were more bendable, weak-minded.
And I agree, I think Kendl should have said something to Sweet, especially at the end of the game. I’d like to think she does off-camera, and that they have happy endings of course :)

I feel like this video overlooks the severity of crack on the storyline. Sweet isn't just angry that Carl left the hood, he's angry that Carl let all of their homies get taken out by the ballas or get hooked on crack.
When Carl is bragging about all the money he's been making, Sweet is furious that he hasn't even tried to stop Big Smoke from pushing crack on their homies.
In fairness, that's cus Tenpenny said he'd hurt Sweet if Carl tried, but Carl never even mentions that. Carl is geniuenly excited to be out of the hood, and Sweet resents the fact he's not willing to go back and help the homies.

Making the hood livable? How? Sweet only had a problem with crack. How does drinking, robbing, murdering and doing nothing remotively productive all day make the hood a livable place?? Because that's what Sweet did pretty much all time, and most likely would have continued had Smoke and Ryder not betrayed the Grove.

At the end, I think he was basically saying that they need to get rid of any lasting effects from the fights. Basically clean up the area and make it better. He wants to improve his neighborhood. That said, his and CJ's goals aren't necessarily opposites. In fact they can work together really well if they spent his fortune the right way.

If you haven't already, there's a rewrite version of this game's storyline on both Fanfiction and WattPad called "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Rewrite" where Sweet actually gets better character development. You should give it a read if you haven't already.

Man, CJ and Arthur are my favourite protagonists, both go above and beyond to provide and care for others.
Also, Toreno says he'll make sure sweet is "well taken care of" and he literally means that, Toreno knew CJ would take care of his brother, i think Toreno always was hinting at getting sweet realeased.

Irrespective of one's local area, state or country. Standing by and for your own area is like a moral bond/obligation, and fix things there and make it better. I guess selflessness? Not sure. But also, hating someone because of ones choice? Can't relate to that.

Sweet is a great character. If anything, I just wish they'd have a redemption cutscene somewhere before End of the Line. One where Sweet is made aware of all the shit CJ went through. Your idea with Kendl lashing out at Sweet would've been a great example.

Yeah cj had the right mindset he wanted to get out and move on to greater things, sweet was just stuck in the same old mentality wanting to protect the hood forever, that’s why all that crazy shit happened to em cuz he still wanted to stay in the hood, if he had just left with cj he wouldn’t have had to experience any of the fucked shit that he did.

Bruh, the first vid I saw of yours was about who really killed CJs mom, that was about a month ago. I was disappointed that you didnt have many san andreas analysis videos like that but still subbed. Your other videos got me into gta and red dead online though tbh. Anyway long story short this video is a breath of fresh air, San Andreas has such a rich story. Love this vid!
I think the reason is as simple as the fact that Sweet has never tasted life outside the hood, so he was not able to see the opportunities it could give him.
CJ's exile outside Los Santos gave him a new perspective of life and made him able to see the world outside Grove Street in general.
That’s what I loved about CJ character development
I always thought it's because he's scared of the world. I have this planned fan fiction where Sweet and Brian are protagonists, and the one that travels San Andreas is Sweet. During it, he sees a lot of horrid things, and that was the backstory to me -- maybe he has traveled, been traumatized by what's out there, and is afraid to leave home just as well. I wanted to stay true to the San Andreas flair by having Sweet do similar over-the-top things as what we do in the original game. We don't really see how Carl's adventures affect him, but the way I see it, Sweet's adventures were traumatic for him. This is a perfect analysis, but if there were a real San Andreas Stories, I like to imagine it should have two playable protagonists, Sweet and Brian, until Brian's death. Because I honestly hated how in Vice City Stories, Victor leaves the city but you still have control of him. With stories like that, that's when you need backups; in VCS, we should've taken control of Diaz, as he's the owner of the city, or at least filling the power void the Vance Crime Family leaves. But it's just my take. There could be room to develop Sweet in both ways as to his mindset.
If there was a San Andreas Stories game, i want it to follow Sweet's story, being the protagonist, 5 years before San Andreas takes place and after Brian died. CJ left to Liberty City, Beverly is still alive, Tenpenny didn't order Big Smoke to kill Sweet, Ralph Pendelbury is still alive, he still tries to show the true side of Tenpenny, Sweet and his gang took over the entire Los Santos but something bad happens and we could finally understand Sweet's fear of the outside world. But i don't think it's possible, because if it does follow Sweet's story, Rockstar needs Young Maylay and others back.

I've lived a comfortable life in my neighborhood for the entirety of my life. My aunts and mom felt so confused as to why my grandmother insisted to stay in this home despite them taking her to a lot of different countries where they currently live. (we live in the Philippines) She bought this house 20 years ago. I feel kinda confused but also kinda understand her especially because I am the only one she spent her life recently with. To me, yes this neighborhood is home where the person at a local store knows what stuff I'm up to the moment I show up, they immediately know what kind of cigarette I puff and what food I eat. It feels like this entire neighborhood is a big'ol house. But at the same time I have to move out to try and live a life of my own and achieve my dreams, I basically have to leave all the stuff I spent in this household The memories, food and the times where I played PS1, PS2 and PSP for countless of hours or other stupid stuff I did as a kid. We have to live a life of our own and not get stuck with one place. That and we'll end up dreamless. This is a very good analysis. I've been watching ur vids for a week now and I still haven't subbed. However this video made me click the subscribe button. It was so good of a content. So please, keep doing the hard work and thank u for this wonderful content.
When he compared him to smoke he didn’t know all that smoke had done , also he was sounding similar to smoke talking about leaving the hood and chasing money that’s literally all smoke was about in the end .

If you hear big bear unused dialogue, he says that sweet did nothing for the hood after Brian death, that's why drugs did get into the hood.
Exactly then sweet decides to try drugs until Carl comes in and stops him
there is a removed conversation from CJ and Big Bear that indicated Sweet's hood mentality (and his lack of intervention when there was tension among the Seville Boulevard and Temple Drive members) was the issue, or at the very least a contributing factor, when the Grove Street Families fell from grace before CJ left for Liberty City
I think what Sweet meant with CJ sounding just like Smoke is that both seemed to want to abandon the hood and live a life o luxury, away from family, aways from the homies, forgetting what is important: the hood itself. That's the issue Sweet sees there, imo.
The main reason I got pissed off at Sweet is because he called Carl a perpetrator. In what circumstance is Carl a perpetrator in any way possible? Carl agreed to stay in Los Santos to help out the gang, by keeping his word, had a sense of loyalty towards his siblings as he felt an obligation to protect them. Now, of course, he successfully got businesses in San Fierro and Las Venturas, not because he was trying to get rich, but because he was trying to support himself, Kendl and Cesar financially in order to return to Los Santos, and exact revenge on those who betrayed Grove Street along with Sweet, who was in prison at that time. And after Toreno got Sweet released, he immediately lashes out at CJ just because the former wanted to show him some of the outside world. How can something be harmful when a person just wanted to show his/her sibling a different world? Now, I am talking about this from my personal experience. I had to leave the old neighborhood where I was living years ago due to some problems. My friends over there were initially sad, but didn't try to obstruct my parents from leaving any way possible. There was this one friend of mine, who studied in the same college where I was, but despite being friends, she never talked to me, unless I attempted to make a conversation with her. And, I noticed this same attitude with almost every single friend of mine when I returned to that neighborhood. They did speak in a nice way, but me and my sister felt insecure deep down because it seemed like they didn't feel interested in us being in that place any more because we had to leave them. I always to tried to make myself be loyal and helpful to them after leaving the place. Now, yes, even my friends had this very same old school mentality that Sweet had about his neighborhood. Both were sad as well as mad that the person left the neighborhood. The difference was that my friends were never openly mad at me for having to do so, unlike Sweet, who was harshly judgmental at CJ for abandoning the hood.

Ryder acts the same thing. He was rude to CJ as well. Ryder was never going to betray Grove Street, but that all changed when the voice actor quit. If Ryder was never killed, I bet he and Sweet will be mad at CJ for abandoning Grove Street. Ryder was never meant to be the antagonist, only Big Smoke. Imagine Ryder helping Sweet and CJ at the end of the mission.

To an extent I agree with you. But I live in a not so good neighborhood and you know from my perspective, It almost never gets better. It would take a huge movement to get the attention it deserves but there's almost no improvement. It's a weird feeling like you know that the city itself doesn't want to help you out. My Aunt(Who I live with) was attacked actually at her job which is in a bad neighborhood and shoplifting is rampant. There's nothing in the area that'll help them even the police don't wanna get involved. As I said before, in these areas it basically feels like you've been abandoned by the city itself that's why most things don't change.
in the end they took down Smoke and Tenpenny, possibly ending the crack epidemic. He did make the hood a better place, but as expected, Sweet still wants to live there
