  • They did it AGAIN. The Floyd Rose FRX might be the WORST tremolo I've EVER USED on a guitar. It is unforgivably, bafflingly bad. DO NOT BUY THIS.

    😂 Dude! I just installed mine on my Les Paul Standard! Took me 7 hours to dial it in. Will admit it was a pain, but as you know, with brand new FR’s you have to break them in(I’d say at least a week of hardcore shredding, heavy dive bombing! I’ve got many and that’s just common knowledge. Anyways, my FRX is dialed in stays in tune way awesome! Just not fair to say it’s a piece of Sh#*%! Mine doesn’t make those weird spring noises! Maybe you got a defective one? Call the CS number on the instructions they are pretty cool!

    wow man, I'm really sorry to hear you had to go through all of this trouble. If there is a "highlight" of the video, or something that will help others, is the fact that hopefully people will see it and not buy one. Truthfully, I thought about getting one for my Epiphone Les Paul custom at some point,...definitely won't now. I have to tell you that in the last 10 years or so, I've really seen Floyd products go downhill. I've had several guitars with floyd specials, most of those were crap, but I managed to get one good one out of maybe seven or eight. The 1000 series is also crap or can be hit or miss as well. I've had 2 or 3 of those as well. You were right on with the Gotoh suggestion, truthfully the best quality for the money. Like the old saying goes, they don't make them like they used to. Thank you for making the video to help others out. I know that you're extremely pissed, and the time wasted over the whole thing is extremely aggravating. I've been there myself too many times.

    I share your frustration! I installed one on an SG and actually had to route into the body to have it sit low enough. Then during the first gig all the intonation screws loosened up and threw the whole thing off. Fixed that then the plastic threaded screw with the ball end that's supposed to center the trem when it floats had stripped out. The whole body of the thing is cheap cast metal and bends when I dive hard. It's not good. Pretty much ruined the SG. I never put out my install video since it is such a pile of garbage.

    The Kahler 2200 Stud mount unit is FANTASTIC! It works beautifully. The fact that some may say the they have a bad reputation means nothing. Try A Kahler on your Les Paul and you'll love it!

    Funny how you describe typical issues that any tremolo wrongly installed/adjusted has, it can be fixed by being patient and try many settings or pay someone to install it 🙂. Floating bridge can be frustrating, but once we get used to its picky adjustment it's fine. FRX in particular requires a bit of experience and a minimum of knowledge, it's not required to know Hooke's law and tension formula in physic though.

    Installed it on my Gibson LP studio and Epiphone LP Classic. I am very experienced with traditional floyd rose trems. Your entire video and findings are 100% spot on with the FRX. It was utter shit. I basically threw mine away. Literally no adjustment, or “block”, that would work with a regular floyd, works on the FRX. The main issue is that it uses a single spring that doesn’t allow for balance control which is why it goes out of tune after a pull, or dive etc. Think for a second: the bar is on the bottom, and so the pressure you apply is not evenly distributed across the bridge because it only has 1 spring on the center, causing it to pivot. This all is not counting the top dents from the posts

    Floyd rose has been weird, out of stock and unresponsive lately. Also their tech materials and specs and especially important tech pictures are either gone or very hard to find. The Pro is just as much a POS as this thing is

    I have one of these mounted to an ESP Edwards Star and honestly have never had any issues with it. Granted I didn't install it myself. Now, obviously that doesn't help your situation, but it makes me wonder if these mods are something of a crap shoot.
    The thing that stuck out to me most was how comfortable the mechanism felt to use, and that being the first thing you mentioned makes me wonder if there is just a 50/50 shot with these things.
    Thats a bummer dude.

    Mine is a noisy clunky mess. You left out the fact that without a retention bar behind the nut, it’s a nightmare getting it in tune. I have to tune mine near a 1/4 step down from where I want it because it jumps sharp that much when I tighten down the nut.

    I’ve been setting up guitars for just over 15 years professionally and over the years I’ve seen a few guitars that won’t stay in tune even with a double locking system and the fulcrum is lube……
    The PROBLEM is the neck/truss rod. The tension in the neck is being tightened and loosen in the most extreme way. If the truss rod is binding in the inside than the neck will keep the bowed shape in either direction.
    I always torque the neck after making adjustment for this exact reason. A “sticky” truss rod is really no big deal until you start “moving” the neck from the use of a trem system.
    In some extreme cases you can hear the truss rod make a rubbing tick tick tick sound when turning the truss.
    LOOONG story short, it’s not the FRX….its your guitar.

      This is because the inserts for the bridge screws are usually set 1/8" further away from the neck on the bass side to help with the intonation of the strings. There's your free lesson for the day. 🎸

    • @banced1
      @banced1 6 місяців тому

      which is precisely why it won't tune up. Because it's set like an acoustic bridge not a "floating trem" which is scientifically designed to return to a set position. The problem is the the points where it's set are cocked for a stationary bridge . Floyd's don't work unless they are square, round head. Now , here's a quarter, go play in the street. @@willswanderings6912

    I had one of these Floyd Rose FRX trem systems, but it was a chrome silver one, no matter how much I adjusted it, I could not get the damn thing to work like it was supposed to, it did not hold tune at all, full stop, I even carefully went through each and every step in the installation instructions several times in a row, making sure I was doing everything absolutely right, made no difference at all.

    This particular style trem I'm not very familiar with. But with any other Floyd Rose, I've never had any problems at all. Whether it be a hot rodded, traditional, special and so on. I don't care what company makes this type of trem, I'll stick with a traditional Floyd Rose, or just leave my hardtail the way it is, as I bought it.

    • @purgasound
      @purgasound 6 місяців тому +1

      @@joesantangelo1 please cite a professional reference to backup your claim. I can refer directly to the FRX instructions which show this statement to be false. Also, eliminating the standard nut in this setup would negate needing to use the FRX nut entirely as you would need to use a OFR locking nut which would require permanent modification by widening and leveling the existing nut shelf to accommodate the larger locking nut. This is also the fundamental reason you cannot use an FRX nut for this purpose. A standard nut shelf is lower than the headstock level and flat with respect to the fretboard. The FRX shelf is angled and designed to be installed on the angled part of the headstock. Even if you did slide it forward it would sit lower than the existing nut. Shimming it up higher would cause the rear part of the FRX nut to not sit flat against the headstock. We can all learn something new everyday.
      Cheers

      @@purgasound look no further than guitars that come with it installed that way, from the factory. Take it to a tech. Have them do it. And it will solve your entire issue. At this point you’re just whining. It can be done either way. Period.

    • @BigJakeMusic
      @BigJakeMusic  5 місяців тому

      Sorry, but I have to chime in here and say you are incorrect, @joesantangelo1. The guitars you are referring to come with standard Floyd nuts from the factory, not the string locker in lieu of a nut. Further, the instructions that come with the guitar explicitly tell you to install the nut locker behind the existing nut. Finally, the nut locker does not have string slots on the fingerboard-end, so it will not work as a nut by itself. If I were you I would not double down based upon conjecture or whatever conclusion you’ve reached inside your own head without having verifiable sources to the contrary. I’m not trying to be confrontational but you are behaving inappropriately toward other commenters on my video so I feel I have to step in.
