There's nothing wrong with marking your work as you go, brother. That just shows that you're thorough and care about the job you're doing. Great video and thanks!
The older I get , the more I double check my work and do things like marking rockers once they’re adjusted. Whatever it takes to be certain that the job is done right the first time.
In my second year of studying right now as a diesel mechanic. Watching this to prepare for a lab and the slow pacing and little explanations along the way is super appreciated. Having notes for references and marking equipment as I move along is something very valuable in the long run when it becomes a habit because it makes you thorough, consistent, and reliable. Awesome stuff, the walk through means a lot.
Pro Tip from a Cummins tech: did your hear how he said its a feel thing?? well that is correct to a certain point, let me explain. Did you see how when he would run adjusting screw down then "feel" for slight drag then tighten the nut? If you want the "perfect" feel every time do this: Insert your feeler gauge as he did turn the adjusting screw down just until you have resistance hold it in place and then tighten your jam nut down. The slight tension the tightening of the jam nut against the adjustment screw will create that "perfect" drag every time.
I'm a paramedic looking into becoming a diesel technician, this is a great resource to see what the work will look like and the engines themselves. You would not believe how hard it is to find the anatomy and physiology of a truck.
Absolutely phenomenal, very detail oriented video! I've never done the overhead on a Series 60, and am jumping into the service truck right now to go and get it done now. This video sure helps!! Thank you!
This video is very well done from the camera man to the man turning the wrench's aka Mr Cox played by himself. I've watched a couple of these video's but none were done as well as this one. I don't even do this for a living and I found it to be very Interesting.
Here's what I taught myself at 2 in the morning and the truck is to be rolling out around 7. New cylinder head installed, ran the overhead and missed my overlap. Doesn't take but a few degrees guys. As soon as that intake roller starts to move with your finger on it, stop. If your intakes are too tight or lose determines where the roller is on the cam lobe ramp. I always roll my intakes to the bottom of the lobe and set those intakes then roll it up to where the roller starts to move. Doesn't take but ten minutes longer. But so what.
Totally fascinated by this video. Watching a master mechanic with years of real world experience working his craft is so exciting. All the while, kneeling on the top of a steer tire hunched over. Makes me hurt just thinking about it.
Tim Jackson I pulled a muscle in my shoulder when I removed that rear Jake brake housing, been doing this stuff about 12 years professionally and it's made a tired body out of a young man!
So the paper said the pattern is good except for ddec v models. So what ephod you do for those? Don't think they touched on that. My luck that's the one i have so this video wouldn't exactly help me. Great video though regardless.
This is so awsome to see and learn thank you I have the same motor for work but for some reason it runs better in the cooler weather haven’t figure it out yet
Cheers from Down Under. Great video. Love watching this sort of stuff. Was a diesel mechanic years ago but now I just enjoy tinkering. Miss is a lot but watching you work on this kind of job reminds me of the sore back and the hyper-extended knees. Those screws that hold the Jake wires. Take them out and throw them to the schissenhausen then replace them with allen head screws. I hate flat bladed screws at the best of times but when they are tight like they were for you then they easily burr over resulting in a lot of swearing and added time to the job. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for sharing, good for you for sticking to whats right and not caving to peer pressure on not marking ones done. Better safe than sorry. God bless
You are welcome. Take a look through our playlist diy truck fixing there’s a ton of videos on there that can walk you through a bunch of common issues.
You run the inj height tool different than me for sure. I put my finger on top and rock the tool in and out watching the bottom of the tool. If the post moves in the inj hole too high, if the flag moves on top, too low. Right in between, lock er down. Also you don't need short rocker shaft bolts, just use the jake spacers on top of the rocker shaft. Also once a year you are suppose to remove the inj harness at the ecm, inspect for oil. If oil found replace the inj harness and if you have the million dollar fitting, vac test the ecm. Must hold 6" of vacuum for 15 minutes. I worked in a fleet that had 11000 s60's. Take care, wear gloves, that crap is highly carcinogenic.
When adjusting the J valve for the Jake's loosen the lock nut and turn in the J valve in about a half a turn to bleed it. Then set your lash adjustment. This pushes the oil out so you don't get a false reading.
Big Daddypat all the credit goes to Matthew Cox on this video ! He did it all. He did an amazing job of talking through what he was doing and showing step by step the process. All I did was hold the camera !

Like I said Clay you can't get any better than a 60 series Detroit. I love the engine best out there. He did a great job you both did. That is a dirty engine. I always marked the one's done to better than trying to remember. The tappets he mentioned I have seen them break we always carried extra and hope you find all of it. Great video thanks my friend keep up the great work. I think I'm subbed to Mathew I will have to check. Great job both of you see you in the next video.
They should make engineers mechanic on cars and trucks for a year just to see where not to put stuff make them come mess with back cylinders or plugs just to see how much of a pain in the butt it is when it’s right next to the firewall
I recommend every 500,000 miles you should run the overhead, rebuild your fifth wheel, pull and install new wheel seals, clean your doc and replace the dpf with new, and spin the fly wheel and install a new clutch.

I also believe there’s something else going on in that engine it has a good bit of front end noise to it.

Do you recall the tool sizes for the injector and valve adjusters? Allan wrench and socket/wrench sizes? I see the locks are all 14mm/9/16.
I think those are 30-35 ft lb on the locknuts. If you use a torque wrench on lugnuts, why not on these? Thanks for the video either way.

I've got a 1992 Series 60 Detroit. Can I use the same chart and method that you guys used?
I would remove the surge tank mounting bolts then swing it out of the way with out draining
Next I would remove the cowl
Doesnt take long giving you a better view for inspection and also prevent dirt and debris from falling off of it and going into the open over head
Then that tray of tools I wouldnt use them
I use my series 60 tune up tool I build
Sold many of them to some of the top series 60 tecs in the bay area who all testified they loved the tool because it was faster and made the job a lot easier
37+ years heavy duty mechanic
27 years at a major freightliner dealership
10 years at Mack
