Mix some turpentine half-and-half with mineral oil and you will get a clear solution with a delightful sweet pine scent. Use it with a rag to wipe down your helmet, including leather liner. But be sure to let it soak in a few minutes before wiping off any excess. DO NOT use an abrasive pad or anything harsh---just a soft cotton rag is best. You'll be amazed at the results---your helmet and liner will look like new! Incidentally you can substitute gasoline for the turpentine, because they're both solvents. But in either case be sure to allow plenty of fresh air so you don't breathe in the fumes, or wear a respirator mask (available at paint/hardware stores. Also both solvents are flammable, so don't use them around lit flames of ANY kind. I have a Swiss WW2 helmet which is slightly different from the German; it came out great!

Nice stuff, I'd try and clean up that M42 a little bit to get rid of the surface rust if you're careful. I came very close to buying that M40, good price..

Hey @jonathan Christian achatz - Enjoy the collection, but mostly the fact you have studied up on the history and you've taken the time to learn. Impressive. Hit me up if you are ever looking to sell any personalized items.
