I have a 2002 polo classic, I tried all options but it seems that car has ghosts in it. The car is giving fault codes of bad map sensor. I replaced it first with an after market product, didn't work so I bought the very unreasonably expensive vw part..and the car won't even start anymore with I plugged. With the aftermarket sensor it starts but it hesitates when accelerating. Please help with any advice Scotty..I'm in Namibia by the way. I love your videos so much.

I have a 99 Plymouth Grand Voyager . It was running fine and all of a sudden wouldn't accelerate. I cleaned the throttle body and it still runs rough.

This video was perfectly timed... I developed a low idle problem recently in my '05 Chevy Cobalt (140k), especially when coming to a stop. I pulled the throttle body and gave it a good cleaning, and she was good as new! :-) Thanks Scotty!

Just did this to my car just now. Everything worked perfect. You specifically want to do the re learn step at the end so the car idles normally. Great video Scotty!!

I've also found it helpful to remove the Idle Air Control (IAC) and clean that really good when cleaning the throttle body. Great Video!
If you take the hose off thats connected to the iac to air duck. Stick a funle in it and dump seafoam gradualy it fixes iac issuis

Wow, I did the same job on my accord 07 and it actually solved the idling issue on my car, before doing the throttle body cleaning whenever I put the car in drive or turn on the ac , the rpms drop which resulted in the vibrariin. After cleaning it the car rpms have improved from 650 to say 850 while idling and no vibrations, secondly after this whenever I turn AC on , the rpms just increases 100 for a second and comes back to 850, and no vibration. It feels perfect and even driving I feel more power in my car with getting better acceleration output speed. Thumbs up to Scotty .... You rock 👌

My 96 civic was idling poorly when I had it in neutral and at red lights. and sometimes I was worried the car was going to die because of how low the rpm was.I did the same steps as your said and now my civic idles right below 1rpm and it drives amazing! feels like I actually have some torque now.yes i know its a civic but still..and it picks up speed way better than before ..before every time I shift into gear and gave it gas it seemed to pudder and the throttle didn't respond well. thanks again. cost me about 6 bucks at the O'Reilly's
You should really take the throttle body off to clean it so all that crap doesn’t go into your intake.
I just clean my girlfriends throttle body on her 2005 Acura TSX and the rough idle/surging is gone! Thank you Scotty for giving us the knowledge and encouragement to get the job done!
just did this to my 08 TSX and it made a world of difference i was having the idle drop when breaking at stop lights or when shifting into any gear it dropped idle to like 600 this keeps its at a nice and steady 850 - 900 ish its feels way smoother
Thank scotty! Cleaned my throttle platte, car was idling rough en was jumping between 500-700 rpm with A/C on. Now runs perfect on 900rpm! Kia Rio 1.2 CVVT easy diy!

johnathan lopez check the throttle cable if it's an older car; if it's newer it's the computer that controls the throttle
automatics do that. please do not reproduce
If you disconnected the tps sensor connector you may need to do a tps relearn
Scotty I have a 2003 Corolla with 206k miles. I started to have problems when I came to a stop while idling my car would shudder and drop to about 200 rpm or less. I found your video ( already a subscriber) . I did exactly what you showed in the video and I have not had a problem since. Thanks for the tips!

Best to remove the throttle body (only takes a few minutes more) and thoroughly clean front and back of throttle body plate. And be careful, jamming your fingers into that throttle plate can mess up the throttle body motor that's on the side.
I really wanna do this because i saw the inside of it and it looks nasty.

You should have taken the throttle out of the car first and then clean it up, otherwise, all dirty stuff would get into the engine.

HI Radhy, my car ,Renault Megane 1.6 ,as a electronic trottle and somebody told me not to finger open the butterfly trottle when cleaning as it can upset the sensor, is it true? Thank you
@@pauloisidoro2 you should put the car on without starting the engine and your friend must push the gas peddle in. Then it will electronically open and you can clean it without using your finger.

I just did this in my 2010 crv. But I didn't push the throttle manually, in other channels they say u have to turn the ignition on and have someone press the gas pedal. Other wise u might break the some thing in the electronic throttle. What the right way Scotty ? Love u r videos brother.... Best wishes from NYC
You are correct. You don't want to manually manipulate an electronic throttle body. Doing what you did is the proper way.
NEVER do such cleaning with the car on, notice I disconnected the battery doing this. Any throttle can be opened by your fingers or a wooden tool so not to scratch anything.
Scotty Kilmer Hi Scotty. Actually if you open the throttle body with your fingers don't you risk ruining it? I've heard that it will burn the motor in the throttle body on newer cars. Also it has enough force to clamp shut and take your finger off.

Unlikely. Unless you forced the throttle plate open with the key in the run position. Or forced it open against a mechanical resistance.
These are the most common causes of the P2118 code:
Poor electrical connection
Open or short in the actuator circuit
Throttle actuator control motor failure
Failed pedal position sensor
Throttle position sensor faulty
Removed cats+ 02 sensors...now car idles at 500rpm instead of 950rpm.....should I get a high flow cat and throw sensors back in? Should do it? Oh-- only when it's hot does my idle drop.....about 8 mins into driving it. Thx. 0 issues, and 0 C.E.L was on until the SAME DAY I replaced my exhaust to a no cat exhaust.

Hi Scotty. My 2009 Toyota Auris is still idling poorly when the engine is hot, after I pulled off and cleaned the throttle body as you said, and also cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor, but still the same...

You shouldn't have used car cleaner on the MAF sensor or WD40 for that matter, electrical contact cleaner is the proper stuff !!
Ha! 4 different answers.
You can't do a repair on a Toyota poor idle without checking the IAC! (Idle air control, most common cause of idle issues).
The dirty butterfly valve/throttle body doesn't affect the idle on these engines unless it's stuck slightly open, causing fast idle issues instead of low idle.
You need to start by removing the IAC from the throttle body and clean it with carb cleaner or similar. Then use wd40 to free up the shuttle inside. This shuttle rotates to create an air passage that bypasses the butterfly valve and allows the engine to run while the butterfly valve is closed. (This is why dirty throttle body issues don't cause slow idle)
They can suffer from a carbon build up that causes them to stick in the position they sat in while the engine was warm but this is no good when the engine is cold and requires more air to run smoothly. This is why the problem only persists when the engine is cold.
You should also do a simple vacuum leak test before taking anything off the car so you can eliminate vacuum leaks as a cause. The rubber gaitor that attaches the MAF to the throttle body on these engines is a common failure and would also give issues with erratic idle.
It's an electronic throttle body it doesn't have an iac
1998 Toyota Camry. This is exactly what’s happening to my car. I haven’t found a leak and I’ve cleaned the valve. I might’ve missed the butterfly valve being stuck I think I noticed something like that but I have very little knowledge when it comes to cars
Electric throttle body uses a (TPS) throttle body position sensor to control the idle and throttle valve position.

It worked!! Thanks Scotty! I have a 2011 Toyota Sequoia and had just replaced the battery. After I replaced the battery, I started the vehicle and motor was very quiet couldn’t tell if it was on. I started backing up on my driveway and it turned off. I turned it back on and drove to gas station, again it turned off as I was turning into gas stall. I wondered why just changing the battery would relate to this problem. Well looked up info on UA-cam and found Scotty Kilmer’s video. Did just like he said to do, cleaned out throttle body, test drove vehicle and now running with normal idle rpm. Was about 500rpm after battery change, then about 1,000rpm after cleaning throttle body.
Back when i had crown vic she was idling low and the mechanics drove me crazy they changed oil pump and spark plugs and coils ! But the problem was not fixed yet , after one month one guy cleaned my throttle and the idling problem was fixed ! I wasted so much money on unnecessary parts change , i know changing them is a must but not in that situation. Thanks scotty😍

Hi Scotty~ I have a 1998 kIA SPORTAGE upon cold START the idle is too high and goes to 3,000 rpms..when I DISCONNECT the IAC the idle drops back to normal (850 RPMS)...someone said that means the n IAC valve is good???? PLEASE ANSWER ASAP thanks!!
And is non of that is the issue in a MK3 2007 Clio, which while idling, the revs keep dropping then reving back up, and while accelerating, you keep losing power causing a juddery acceleration but runs smooth at speed, 20), 30,40or 50 mph,how do you fix that, please?.

Car used to idle at 1000RPM but after I changed the sensors it started idling at around 600RPM. Anyone else have this happen to them? How can I get back to 1000RPM?

Kilmer the MAN........1996 Subaru legacy outback , engine area fuse box has a fuseable link 125 that gets pretty warm at night with lights , heater, wipers on. Is that normal.? Its warm close to hot to touch...
I have a 2017 Hyundai Elantra. 61k miles. Slight jerks when in idle. Jerks more pronounced when driving at low speeds, when accelerating again after taking foot off the pedal and also when the A/C is on. I have changed transmission fluid at 60k miles. Engine oil changes are also regular and on schedule. Tested ignition coils by removing connectors and seeing the engine response. All seem to work fine. Fuel injector test also done with the screwdriver. All seem to work fine too. Replaced spark plugs recently. All of these done but jerks still occur. No check engine lights. Any help?

Hi Scott, I got Mazda 6 2005 hatch 2.3L. Every time I stopped at traffic light or round about, my car RPM level dropped and the engine shuts off. This only happens at the first 10 or 15 min, after that the RPM becomes normal. Any suggestions?

I have a 1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme S 3.1 and about 5 weeks ago my cut cuts off as I was idling @ a stop light, but it started right back up,I thought that I have an bad alternator or something electrical so took it to Firestone to have it checked, but everything was ok,starter, battery & the alternator was doing what it was suppose to do.but it still was cutting off,so I googled it and said that i may need an AIR IDLE CONTROL VAVLE, so again back to Firestone and when they put the part on, they said it was worse off, then they put on a sensor & that didn't solve it either.They told me that it could be an elecertical issue, which I remnded them that it was already checked and now they are telling me that my computer and may have to go to the dealer.I think I may have to change my battery, it's about 5 years old,DIEHARD, will a weak battery causing my idle speed to drop and cutting off. They did cleaned my throttle body,but it even cut off in the parking lot as I was going home,so what could be the issue? Thanks

Been having an issue with my car. It had a really bad low idle and surging. Would sometimes turn off when I came to a light. I got some maf sensor cleaner and sprayed the intake and cleaned it out. It ran fine till about a month later(now) when I turn it on, it's in really high idle (2000, 2500 rpm). But quickly drops down and after riding it doesn't drop or spike up. It's a Mazda p5 2003. Any suggestions?
Hey Scottie i have a 2013 Toyota camery SE. it’s been idling low for about 1-2 months and I recently started my car up and it idled really low and the engine sounded like it was struggling to stay alive and it eventually tuned off by its self. I went to an auto parts store to get the battery checked out since it’s a couple of years old but everything checked out okay. I was thinking of doing this trick but I don’t have my original keys with the remote to lock and unlock my car, do you think I can still try this or will my alarm go off? Will a low idle (2008 Mitsubishi Lancer, original factory, 120,000 miles) make the car speed up to fast as you give it gas from a stop position to go (the surge of power jerks and speeds up abruptly). Haha, im not sure how mechanics describe it. The abrupt jerk from 'Stop to Go' is very annoying, and even when i give gas at 20 mph and more, it's abrupt.
I can't figure out what's wrong with my car(2001 Ford escort se). Had a radiator leak a week ago. Replaced the upper/ lower hoses, cleaned the reservoir tank. New heater core pump. Low coolant light still flashes on. Then had a engine misfire. Replaced sparkplugs/coils & wires new thermostat. Code cleared and popped up again w/engine misfire and a random misfire. Plus the coolant light came back on whenever the car starts shaking really bad. Changed filters. Had a fuel system service done . Same problem and rough idling.

Scotty! My Honda Accord stalls when I start my AC... When I scanned the car a CKP sensor code (P0339) so I replaced the wiring and also changed the spark plugs... but the thing still stalls. Can you suggest me what should I do? As there are no codes showing up...

I have a 2000 HSV Clubsport (which is a Holden, in Australia) that utilizes the 5.7L LS1.
It idles funny. By funny i mean the engine seems to jolt randomly. You can feel it through the car it's like a misfire but it doesnt happen in any sort of rythem. It seems to do it a few times, then once, then once again, then a few times, then a few times and so on.
I hear these engines just don't idle smoothly in any case but I still think it's a little weird. I've only replaced the spark plugs and ignition leads so far and wondering what I should look at. Is cleaning the throttle body a good place to start? what about the maf sensor? Also I hear the o2 sensors cause problems in the ls1 but believe there not really associated with idling issues.

I just trade in my 2003 Camry for a 2015 Camry I should have done that but I didn't nor my mechanic :( now I have to pay 16,000 dollars for a 2016 Camry suck but I got old with that 2003 I need a upgrade
I have a 2002 Chevy cavalier that idles randomly between 500 and 1100 rpm, dies as the car comes to a stop and will no longer rev past 4000 rpm in park. I took the IAC and throttle body out cleaned both tested the IAC with a multimeter which read 71. Checked plugs and wires cleaned and regapped plugs. Still it runs like a tank any suggestions or a point in the right direction would be of great help. "Currently waiting for New online order IAC" to arrive".
I have 2003 Mercury Sable and it has been driving too lean. It started off with a vacum leak. My husband has changed out oxygen sensor, pcv, pvc valves, mass, map sensors, tps, new oil and fuel filter, new gaskets, idler air control and probably some other items I can't remember at this moment. I pretty much have a new enging, anyways my car wants to stall out when sitting at lights or stop signs and even when backing up. We have been dealing with my car for over a month now and are getting really frustrated as to why it's stalling when everything that has to do with sensor's and vaccums has been replaced. He has even cleaned out the throttle. Please Help!! Any ideas!!
Please help me Scotty. I've got a 1999 Civic that is starting to drive me nuts... A few weeks ago it wouldn't start, so I had it towed to a shop and two days later it was ready... The guy from the shop told me that it had been the distributor (some parts were out of place...) and that no parts were necessary, just some re-adjusting... When I got a chance to open the hood, I found out that the throttle cable had been tightened somewhat... I noticed right away that the car was idling a little lower than usual, but since it
drove fine, I didn't make a big a big fuss about it... Anyway, it would always start with a low rpm, but it would go back to normal shortly after, when I would coast or stop. However, a few days later, when I went for a drive and sped quite a bit on an open road, the car's idle has changed significantly...
It idles at around 1500 rpm when coasting until I come to a full stop, after which the idle drops to 1200 rpm... On cold starts, it revs up to 2000 rpm, but gradually drops down to 1200 rpm, so I guess the IACV is ok...
I've checked the spark plugs which have about 12000 kms on them and look almost new,
I've tried readjusting the throttle cable, but to no avail,
cleaned the throttle body,
searched for any hose with damage, trying to find a vacuum leak with water,
I also tried troubleshooting as in the shop manual, where you cover the lower port of the throttle body, where it states if you cover it and there is no change in the idle, then you have a vacuum leak and there is no change to the idle when I cover it...
However, if I cover the air inlet tube to the air filter, it makes what seems to be a suction noise...
When I have the air inlet removed and stop the engine, a strange noise comes from the throttle body, like two or three hisses...
Does this mean I have a vacuum leak?

My 2001 Grand marquis 4.6L has been cleaned in throttle body, and still has some strange issue only when idle at stop in drive. Voltage drops way down from about 1/2 way on voltage gauge to about 1/8 just above lowest reading on in dash voltage gauge! Then back to normal when I start moving again and step on gas... however it doesn't fluctuate when traveling, stays in mid section on gauge. No change it blower or AC is on or off doesn't matter...tested all voltage wiring and replaced alternator! still same thing at idle when stopped in drive! Doesn't stall out, still idles and stays running but with barely any voltage. Battery is tested under load and voltage is good. I'm at a total loss.. " no clue what could be causing this problem, but apparently I'm not the only person. There are many complaints about a voltage drop issue at idle under various conditions! It's got the voltage regulator build on the back of the alternator on this model car. Any suggestion Scott please?
Scotty, I have corolla 2009. I just change all the filters, motor mount, alternator, do tune up, ignition coil changed, spark plug and done by toyota dealer… but after done of them, my car shaking and sometime shake badly when its idle and check engine light ON.
Toyota ask me to change wiring engine harness, but it doesnt change anyhing… please help me
Mine is new...filter is clean and yet the check engine light only comes on at idle and goes away at 25 mph...any suggestions? It's a 2007 chevy suburban 5.3
Hey Scotty. Just subscribed. My 2001 jeep Cherokee is stalling and low idle. I cleaned the IAC, because my throttle body didn’t look too bad. Should I go ahead and clean that too? My car still isn’t running good.

My 2002 Renault Laguna keeps swinging low when I let off throttle.
It will swing down to 600RPM, almost stall, but then it climbs up to normal 800RPM or 900 if I have AC on.
It kind of drops fast then catches it and I don't like that, it must be putting strain on the engine and other parts, I would much rather it come down slowly and stop at 800.
Is there anything I can do about that?
Scotty I recently clean my mass 02 sensor and throttlebody I seem to still be throwing a trouble code of Running to lean now I’ve noticed when I go down the road and let off the gas my idol is jumping up and down slightly in a rapid pace it’s a 2008 Toyota tundra with 200,000 miles on it 5.7 L V-8 please help do you think I need to change the Iac sensor
Hi, my chrysler C300 5.7 L , i did clean the throttle and fuel injecters but the problem still not fixed,the rpm somtimes drop down like the engine about to stop for second while stopped the car in p gear and it going normal again,can you help??

Hello Scotty. Today i have cleaned my vauxhall zafira 1.8 petrol throttle body but after cleaning. Car idling really badly going high and low revs crazy. Its a factory fitted lPG car. On lpg its even worse. What could it be please can you help. Is there any vacum leak or bad idle sensor. It use to be a minor idle problem in cold specially on lpg but when it reaches the normal temperature it’s idle fine . Sorry for the long message . Thanks

Scotty, Please help! My 2002 Saturn Vue 2.2 Ecotec has 260K miles.... the Reduce Power light on... I would usually pull over and turn off the car and then back on and it would go away... well finally, the car went into Reduce Power, and stayed that way to where it could idle anymore. It's in a parking lot and I went to get a throttle cleaner and I cleaned the throttle fairly good without taking it off. Now it will kinda start, but it will not idle... I let off the gas, it goes out..... what can I do to get it running again??

I did this for my parent's Ford Taurus 2008 and car is still idling at about 500 RPM's. I cleaned it really good, I even took out the throttle body but still idling poorly. What could be causing this?

My 95' toyota starts up and idles normally (800rpm) most times but sometimes when I start it up it will idle low @500-600rpm. I have already cleaned the throttle body but it will still idle low sometimes, until it has been running for a few minutes, then it idles normally. should I try cleaning the maf sensor?

But after some time car idle fluctuate up and down and when you rev up and leave or driving and press clutch rpm dropped to 150 to 200 rpm and back to 800 rpm and slowly back to 900 its struggles i clean IAV with throttle body cleaner and clean throttle body from inside only i can see little part iis still black inside

Hi Scott, I have done the above things to my 1996 Nissan Sentra. I swapped out the IAC valve and it still idles poorly. Should I disconnect & reconnect the battery in hopes of resetting the car's memory?
If applicable, it's also a good idea to take off the idle air control valve and give it a good cleaning. Often fixes poor idle as well.
