    CP actually bought three E8s. #1800-1802. However, 1801 was wrecked prior to VIA.

    Thanks for presenting videos on Canadian Railway locomotives however l find your videos move along a hyper pace therefore l'm able to get little from them. Plus too much description of what you go through making them.

    While the E8 did have a V12 567B engine, it didn't have just one. Almost all of the E units (for sure the later models) had 2 567 engines. Each truck (interestingly enough not C-C trucks but A1A-A1A) had its own engine and generator for the traction motors. The 567 was and still is very dependable, but it was quite limiting when only 1 engine and/or generator was operational. One of the last surviving Union Pacific E units (I believe there's only 5 now) for the longest time only had 1 working main generator from abuse in Chicago commuter service, leaving it with 1125 horsepower to work with. Thankfully, E8 #942 is now up and running just fine and resides at the Orange Empire Railway museum with a completely rebuilt replacement main generator.
    I wish more E units were still running. They truly were wonderful locomotives.

      LET ME CHIME IN! THE E-8'S&9'S WERE AND STILL ARE MY FAVORITE DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES! I JUST LOVEDTHEIR ENGINE SOUNDS AND THE SHEER SPEED THEY COULD GET THEMSELVES UP TO. THEY COULD RUN ON THOSE A1A TRUCKS. AND DONT FORGET THE ESTHETICS OF THEIR GREAT LOOKS FRONT TO BACK! AND DONT FORGET THEY EVEN HAD A BACKUP LIGHT IN THE BACK! THE DESIGN OF THOSE LOCOMOTIVES WERE TRULLY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME! THEY ARE SORELY MISSED BY ME! EARL OF EL BARRIO NYC NY. SIGNING OFF FROM SOUNDING OFF. 6/28/18. 6:26PM

    There was one small thing you missed about the E8s: CP had 3 (1800-1802) and 1801 was wrecked in a head on collision in Jan 1969 in Ontario. otherwise great video!
    Ik this comment is a year late, Lol.

    E8 were never used on the Transcontinental, it was a CN train. E8's were used by CP to pull trains from Montreal Windsor Station to White River Junction,VT, an exchange point with the Boston & Maine, because they were built, in 1949, by EMD, not GMD. Yes, they pulled trains to points in NB as well. FPA-2s, at least CN units, were not built from 1946 to 59. They were built only in 1955 with 1600hp 244 engines, rebuilt later with 1800hp 251s.

      When I say built I mean every single one purchased by railroads. the first one was ordered in 49. as for the E8s not being used on the Canadian my researched turned up that was the reason VIA kept the E8s.

    • @realcanadianrailfan110
      @realcanadianrailfan110 6 років тому

      Via used them on the Canadian as far as Calgary. The reason they weren't used further West to Vancouver, was because they weren't equipped with dynamic brakes. So, yes, they were used in part, on a Transcontinental train.

    • @davidlisowski5245
      @davidlisowski5245 5 років тому +1

      Yes. They were purchased as “pool power” to be used with Boston and Maine units on the daytime Alouette and evening Red Wing trains to Boston. RDCs replaces the day trains and the evening train was cut, so that’s how they ended up on the New Brunswick route.

      The FPA2 is a passenger version of the FA2. Missouri Pacific, Lehigh Valley and the B&O had them. They had the 244 Alco engine. The FPA4 were built for the CNR only and looked very different from the FPA2.
      As far as the E8. They were used in the Montreal-Ottawa and the Montreal-Boston pool until the RDC came into favor with both the B&M and CP.

    Love your vids so keep em coming. Just a minor point, you said CP ran the E8's (correct) but you also said they ran on the Transcontinental, later called the Canadian. My dad worked for CN then VIA for a career spanning 42 years. The Transcontinental was one of 2 East to West that CN ran before passing the name over to VIA

    • @greenmanofkent
      @greenmanofkent 4 місяці тому

      CN's name was the Supercontinental, not the Transcontinental (I know, because I rode on it in 1965). CN did indeed have 2 transcontinentals - the other was called the Panorama.

    Hello
    I enjoy your videos especially the Canadian version of engines of via I was hoping that you could direct me or explain the differences in the names of these engines I grew up when there was CN/ CP and the transition to Via….
    How much it still confuses me I noticed that some have six wheeled trucks While others have four wheel trucks I see some engines with work is called a B unit attached not certain if he’s being answer specifically steam generators for the old steam heated passenger buggies however if someone Was able to explain the differences in these engines as they often appear identical and or very similar also I have seen various engines back in the day with what they classified as slugs….
    Thanks for the videos
