    Via Rail discontinued passenger service to my home town of Peterborough in 1989, and I'm like 90 percent sure the last train out was an RDC.

      Yes they were, the line went from Toronto to Havelock, "fish hook" in conductor terms, I used to ride it about twice a week.

    Awesome video! The set of RDCs that were rebuilt were bought from the DART by AllEarth, and are expected to see commuter service in Northern Vermont within the next year. There are two in St. Albans, VT, and another ten in Barre, VT. They will be on a VRS dinner train out of Burlington, VT in November, to show the public the qualities of the RDC. Once in service, I'll try to get as much footage of them as possible, as I'm a fan of the RDCs as well

    Greetings from Brazil. Used to ride these RDCs as a sort of intercity bus. We still have a couple around in tourist trains, one in Curitiba-Paranaguá grade, another one in Rio de Janeiro. The RJ one looks more like the vanilla Budds, the ones I used to ride were built under license and look quite different.

    HiGood video.In the years 85, I worked for the company Cummins to Pointe-Claire.
    In these years, VIA Rail made a major change on engines.
    Of the original series GM 110 (330 HP), they changed for a NTC 340. (340 HP)
    Coupled with an automatic transmission 4 or 5 speeds, made by Twin Ind.
    I have myself make tests on all the engines which had to find themselves on all Budd of VIA. No information about this on Internet.

    I had a conversation about RDCs last night with another fan. Apparently New Haven had the most, with Boston and Maine probably second (they replaced their entire passenger service with RDCs in the 1950's!). When Massachusetts' MBTA took over the B&M commuter operations they eventually "neutered" their Budd cars, removing the engines and the exhaust/radiator "hump", making coaches out of them. They ran that way into the early 1990's when "The T" got new equipment and many of them became the first passenger cars for Virginia's VRE commuter operation for several years. Then many of them were sold to a startup commuter operation in Texas (Dallas maybe?). They may still be operating as coaches somewhere. After all, Budd stainless coaches are virtually indestructible if taken care of properly. There was one other type of RDC you probably didn't know about. The B&O had two RDCs that were food service table cars (I think Nos. 1960 and 1961) for service between Washington, DC and Pittsburgh, PA. By the end of the 1950's, the B&O had converted that service totally to RDCs (called "Speedliners"). One of those table RDCs is/was owned by the B&O Museum in Baltimore and was used for many years as their snack bar. I don't know if that is still true. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad between Cleveland and Akron, OH rosters around 3 RDCs, and recently converted one to being a charter executive/business/meeting car.

    • @paulw.woodring7304
      @paulw.woodring7304 5 років тому

      Just remembered, the CVSR also rosters at least one of the "neutered" MBTA Budds as a handicap access coach.

    • @alanwbelcher
      @alanwbelcher 2 роки тому

      Actually, the B&M had the greatest number of units, not New Haven. I believe the grand total was 109 (Wikipedia says 108), though not all operating at the same time. They even rostered an RDC4, though it was used as spare parts source & stored in Billerica shops.

    Every major company ran RDC, because they were trying to cut costs on low revenue routes. The companies in question were actually trying to end passenger service altogether; then consumer protections stepped in and said, you can't just abandon all those passengers who came to rely on you. So after years of the companies complaining about lost revenue; the government stepped in and took over those money-losing routes, and actually made them profitable, by onsolidated them all together.
