*Corrections and Additional Information* 1. 1:26 I completely neglected to mention Ace Frehley, who Dimebag was such a huge fan of he had a portrait of him tattooed on his chest, and yes I said Tony Iommi's name wrong. Funny enough I've said it like that my whole life and never knew otherwise, so chalk another one up in the Crime Spot name pronunciation hall of shame I guess haha. 2. 5:30 So I've heard people pronounce his name ANNE-SEL-MO and AAN-SEL-MO, I've pronounced it the way I say it in the video my whole life so that's just how I said it here. 3. 7:06 This is probably the biggest mistake of the video. He actually changed it after their 1994 album Far Beyond Driven, I'm sorry about this. I listened to Pantera growing up but I was still pretty young when they were at the height of their popularity in the 90s, by the time I got into the band it was the early 2000s and they were basically already broken up so I just always knew him as Dimebag. 4. 14:24 So originally I thought this was weird, but a friend of mine told me it isn't as uncommon as you might think for a singer to do this. The band's chemistry was definitely starting to fall apart at this point, but this may not be as big an indication of that as I originally thought. 5. 16:46 Lachman was not the front man of Halford, he played guitar for them. My mistake, thanks to commenter Toshi Iseda for pointing this out. 6. 17:45 In an interview years later, Rita Haney said that Dimebag was actually becoming frustrated with Damageplan's lack of success and was considering reaching out to Phil and Rex to try and set up a Pantera reunion. Obviously because he was murdered this never materialized, and at the end of the day it's just Rita's claim, but I figured it was worth mentioning. 7. 22:08 The fact Nathan committed the murder on the same day John Lennon was killed was deemed a coincidence by law enforcement, but it's definitely weird. 8. 23:08 I am well aware the security camera footage of the incident is not good lol, but it was all I had to work with, this was 2004 so HD cameras weren't really a thing yet. Sorry. 9. 25:34 The hostage did survive, sorry I neglected to mention that. Vinnie Paul passed away from a heart attack in 2018 and is buried next to his brother (also in a Kiss Kasket), I didn't mention this in the video because I didn't want it to drag on much longer than it already had, but it was probably a mistake not to talk about it at least briefly. Apologies to Rex Brown fans for him getting swept under the rug in this video lol, I was trying really hard to keep it all under a half hour so a lot of stuff was cut for time and unfortunately I really neglected Brown here. He was a great bassist and an invaluable component of Pantera's success, but I was trying as much as I could to keep this video focused on Dimebag's side of things. A lot changed with security at concerts after Darrell's death, for many years before the shooting it was very very common for fans(especially at metal shows) to jump on stage with the band and jam out before jumping off. Understandably, Dimebag's killing changed this, and these days if you jump on stage at a show uninvited you will likely be dogpiled by security and thrown out. I just wanted to reiterate that while I am a fan of Pantera I would not consider myself a super fan by any stretch, I listened to their music growing up and still do on occasions but I never looked into the band's history or story all that much before doing research for this video. So if there is something wrong with the summary I gave of their career, please feel free to let me know!
I read about that years ago, and I thought even at the time what a fucking legend Eddie was for doing that. Hopefully these two are rocking the fuck out in the afterlife, with Vinnie Paul on drums and maybe John Entwistle or someone like that playing bass.
Only guitar player I've ever heard and have just been stumped on how to make some of those sounds. Generally speaking, I can hear something and have a ballpark idea on what's happening, with dime, some of that shit I still haven't a clue. Dude had so much talent
@Matt I absolutely agree!! I play several instruments and sing. I practice a ton and I can't seem to get the guitar. It just seems harder for me. Dime made that thing talk to you!! I'd have to say he has a sound of a Randy Rhodes and Cliff Burton. Dime is among an amazingly gifted few
Picking up a instrument means nothing. The majority of you 🤡s can't even make a song or anything good at least yet bash great bands for mediocre sonatas.
You told the story of Dimebag better than most actual music channels can. And FAR better than the average metalhead can. And you made a True Crime video about a mass shooting; yet also made one of the best Dimebag life and death documentaries around.
Agreed.. remember working with a co working in Sidney Ohio. He invited me to this show. I was recalled to another job in Chicago & didn't attend the show.. he did. I Haven't seen him since.. True Loss of a guitar legend....
@@RedceLL1978Yeah, he was the only person in history to have ever committed such a heinous act and it absolutely played a major role in his life, career, and untimely death-by-murder. We need to petition to have this added as a pivotal turning point in this story. Maybe even change the entire title to accomodate it: _Dimebag Darrell: Murder, or Justified Elimination of a Racist Monster?_

It’s kind of weird to think I was born the exact day dimebag died (8th December 2004). Of course artists like John Lennon, juice wrld also died on December 8th. I think my birthday is cursed.
I feel horrible for the fan who went up and tried to save dimebag. Respect. There are only so many musicians that would make someone care that much to take a bullet for them.
Having met hundreds of metal musicians and knowing hundreds of them are great people, no one touches Dime's absolute class. We were at an after party at a bar once and a man walked in beat up and bleeding. He walked over and Dime told his bodyguards to let him through. Dude said he came all the way from (city 1k miles away) just to shake Dime's hand. Dime shook his hand and asked what happened. Dude said he was jumped and robbed, and car stolen. Then he followed up and said thank you sir for making this all worth it and began to walk away. Dime called him back, got him a hotel for the night and bought him a cheap used car in the morning and got him home. Dime is class. I was supposed to be at the show he died at, but my truck broke down twenty miles outside of town on the way.
My mom used to work at a club that Dimebag & Vinny would frequent often, she has told me that when they were around, that they were always the safe table to go to, to chill out from the chaos of the club. Many of years later, and a few years after Dimebags murder, Vinny would recognize my mom soon after I was born in a Target just around the corner from our house and hold me for a few minutes while they chatted, apparently I loved Vinny so. :D
A moment for vinnie who had to watch his prodigy little brother get murdered in front of him. I can’t ever imagine that level of pain. RIP Dime and Vinnie
@@jacqueskisling8241cardiomyopathy (broken heart syndrome does fall under this category) and coronary artery disease. All those years of partying, drinking and smoking contributed to both.
In interviews with Hellyeah, they detailed Vinnie going back into the studio where they’d last recorded before Dime’s murder. They recorded 5 albums and was in the process of recording #6, _Welcome Home_ when Vinnie passed.
A friend of mine met Dimebag Darrell in a nightclub. My friend wanted to talk to him, but was worried he'd get rejected. But he reasoned he'd never get another chance like this, so he approached him. To his delight, Dimebag was extremely cordial and appreciative, and they bought each other drinks and talked for a while. A few weeks later, Dimebag was killed.
My friend worked for Darrell a few years before he died. Said he was a great guy. Darrell's in a better place now, let's be glad we got to enjoy his talents.
Every story I’ve ever heard of meeting the guy is he stopped and spent time with that fan for a little bit, in a bar so shots have a beer, in public chat em up a bit, try to motivate them in whatever they were doing in life. He was incredibly kind to the very young rockers with the Pantera shirt way too big for them, cause he remembered those feelings and made sure they got a memorable meeting. I don’t have to blow him cause of his playing or he’s a great partier, we all know this. But more should really know what a great and kind human being he was.
I met Pantera in 2000 at ozzfest in Camden/philly. My girlfriend at the time was offered backstage passes. Dime and Vinny were really nice guys. They both signed my shirt from the vulgar display of power tour. It’s framed in my basement and it is one of my prized possessions. It is also the only time I have ever seen a full half of the general admission area(the field) become a pit. It was a very dry summer night. It was hot as hell and the dust rising above the pit looked like steam. It was the best set I’ve ever seen at a festival. The only show I’ve ever seen that could come close was slipknot at the electric factory in Philly. I went to that show just to see As I Lay Dying and thought slipknot was a joke because of the masks and stuff but was blown away by their performance. As I Lay Dying was mediocre at best but slipknot was incredible.
For this not being a music channel, your deep dive into the band’s complete history was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed the thorough details and band’s history synopsis. Great job!!
I'm glad Dime had no idea what happened. He died painlessly, without fear, and just doing what he loved. The victims that followed had no such mercy. I can't imagine how scary that was, to go from possibly one of the best moments of your life immediately to the worst.
I couldn't imagine being Vinny and physically seeing my brother/best friend get shot and killed in front of me and not be able to get to him to protect, love, hold, comfort etc etc
I met vinny for 5 seconds years ago! I was actually at the Cincinnati venue before that last fatal incident in Columbus. The night I met Vinny Damageplan had just ended their show and then out of nowhere VP came across the street to small bar/laundry/metal band venue. I was walking out when was walking in. I tripped over my flip flop and my face was about to catch my fall until 2 thick stocky arms caught me mid fall! At this point I'm surprised I didn't piss myself. I told him sorry 5 times and he answered with "no worries young lady".... the best part is he told me my ol man(at the time) was a fucking dickhead! The ex tugged and pulled and yanked aggressively on me which is why I lost my flip flop
Fun fact...... in 2005 Lamb Of God came to the same Cincinnati venue that damageplan had played before the fatal Columbus show! During lamb of God's set Randy Blythe stopped the show and made it a point to acknowledge how awesome their(Bogart's) security was because crazy pants Mcgee tried to bum rush to their stage but was not successful!
I grew up in Dallas in the 90's and Dimebag was at every rock concert in town. No one would rush him because he was just one of the guys. He was very sweet and approachable. He bought a bunch of Star Wars stuff from me when I worked at Spencer's and he gave me free passes to the strip club they owned.
@@leopardcubpupkryky6940wtf is your problem? Cuz in reality, you’re the one trying to gain attention, making it about your own projection of “who you think this is or isn’t about”… Dime loved his family, friends, and fans & hung out & left his mark on many ppl. My son is so inspired by dime bag.. we bought him a cheap Walmart electric guitar when he was 10.. that thing laid in the closet for 4 1/2 years. My son got it out of the closet about a year ago and started learning to play.. to only have just started he’s can play almost anything. My mind is blown how good he is. And he’s upgraded his guitar to the signature, Dime bag and it sounds amazing.. I’m so proud of him..
Ins and outs of panteras sound - dime played Randall solid state 100 watt amps - not tube amps - this is why his tone is so..... ice picky - most bands play tube amps and metal bands play mesa boogie or Marshall amps - dime stuck with solid state his whole career.
Your a great pops. Keep facilitating his skills. You never know how grateful he’ll always be of that. -a fellow music musician who’s got a dream I’ll never let go of. And oh man do I ever miss my dad singing me to sleep while playing the guitar every night as a kid.
Its crazy how we dissociate from traumatic events. Our brains can't process what we are looking at. I'm sure this moment is seared into your brain, though, still incomprehensible. I'm sorry you had to go through this.
I actually liked Damageplan a lot. I think Down was even better than Pantera. I used to always wear my Damageplan shirt whenever my band played live, in honor of Dimebag.
Ugh I had the honor of meeting Dime right before this show. He was the nicest man on earth. You wouldn’t know he was so famous just by how cool and sweet he was. I think I cried most of this video. Pantera was a huge part of my high school years over 20 years ago. He will never be forgotten.
It is heartbreaking. I have met darrell & the rest of the band, Dime was the nicest, coolest, & the funniest, & insanely talented. That bastard who shot Him was at a damage plan show weeks before the killing, & He confronted DImebag on stage (unarmed that time) & My cousin tackled the guy & the guy was escorted away. At The next show, The same guy showed up armed this time, & opened fire onstage. My cousin was tour manager for Pantera & Friend of Dime's. My Cousin was not at that last show fortunately for Him. RIP Dimebag.
@@dryer1901 It's not irrelevant. Comparing these two guitarists is apples to oranges. Exemplified by the world of difference between Rock and Thrash metal.
I remember when this happened, my brother and I were kids and had just became HUGE Pantera fans. It was pretty hard to understand how and why it happened at a young age. Best guitarist I’ve still ever heard.
Dime and Vinnie personified all of us metalheads back in the day. Going through the changes, never giving up and following what we love. This was a great documentary, thank you for posting!
RIP to the 5 people that lost their lives that night. Pantera had a falling out like so many other bands have. Had Dime not been taken in 2004, I think they definitely would've reconciliated and had a few more chapters in them.
It will be 17 years this December and I still recall the sucker punch to the gut that it felt like when I found out about Dimebag. It still is incredible that Dime almost joined Megadeth after Dave Mustaine had fired the drummer Chuck Behler and lead guitarist Jeff Young. Mustaine tried to recruit Dime who was on board on the condition that Vinnie Paul also join as the new drummer. Had Nick Menza - Behler's drum tech - not already joined Megadeth then the lineup would have been: Dave Mustaine - lead vocals/lead and rhythm guitar David Ellefson - bass guitar Marty Friedman - lead guitar Dimebag Darrell - lead guitar Vinnie Paul - drums With THAT kind of lineup throwing off THAT kind of shrapnel then Metallica's Black Album in 1991 would have been sharing the overall number one spot on the Billboard charts with Megadeth. The world will never know . . . . .
@@DrLuke49 If Dimebag was hired, Marty wouldn't have been in the band. Megadeth has always had two guitarists; never three. To my understanding, it was only after Dimebag declined because he couldn't bring Vinnie with him, that Dave started looking for another guitarist, and that's when he found out about Marty. it all worked out for the best in my opinion, as Megadeth went on to record Rust In Peace, which is one of the greatest thrash metal albums ever. Marty Friedman's guitar work and Nick Menza's drumming shines on that record. Pantera went on to have their greatest success & releasing their best work right after that as well. So all in all, it worked out great for both bands.
I still miss Mayhem. ❤ The whole scene is still surreal. Mayhem was a huge mountain of a teddy bear. It's hard to imagine a situation that his giant presence and booming voice couldn't settle.
Was on CQ in the Army the night this happened. Had a medic who was all about Pantera, tattoos, tshirts 7 days a week ect. He came to the desk and was crying for like 2 hours about Dimebag getting killed. I just set there and let him sob and try to make sense of it to me, I will never forget his passion for the band.
I’m not ashamed to admit I bawled like a baby that whole day when news broke of Dime’s death. Still can’t get through any documentary of Pantera/Damageplan without tears flowing when it gets to this part. Just glad I was lucky enough to see Pantera live 5 or 6 times
I visited dimebag and Vinnie's Graves a couple years ago, and the fact that Eddie's guitar was only a few feet away from me crossed my mind. But it was so incredibly surreal to sit there, and think, these men changed my life, and they never knew. I could never express to them exactly what they mean to me. That alone hurt pretty bad. Apparently people kept vandalizing their monuments, so by the time I visited, there was a fence around it. I left a guitar pick and a dime, to honor Darrel. I've heard dime and Vinnie would call out to each other "van Halen mother fucker" before getting on stage, and I think it will have to be tradition for my bands going forward, that we shout "pantera mother fucker" in the same spirit. We'll miss you both, rock in peace ✌️
I had the pleasure of seeing them in San Jose event center when I was in high school 1996. Sepultura and Prong opened. To this day that concert was unmatched for all the shows I've been too. Dimebag threw out a couple of handfulls of black signature guitar picks into the crowd. Right in the pit. I was lucky enough to get one. Never knew his brother was the drummer, or all the reasons that all this happened later. I have been listening to them for a long time and never knew half of the stuff you shared in this video. Great job. Great video. RIP Dimebag.
The next summer at the 2005 Ozzfest in Columbus just miles from where Dimebag was murdered. When Black Label Society took the stage Zakk Wylde brought out the officer who killed Dimebags shooter and it gave me chills standing there watching it. There wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd.
I WOULD HAVE FOUND A WAY TO SHAKE THE BRAVE OFFICERS HAND.. THAT would have been a teary thank you for having the guts AND MORALITY( UNLIKE THE SHOOTER) TO RISK HIS ASS and take out the TRASH
@@shamelesskindness said the only person ever in the history of Pantera/Dimebag/Zakk fandom… I almost feel compelled to ask you to explain yourself, but really, I don’t give a fuuuuuuuck
Dimebag really had a heart of gold. He was someone that truly appreciated music and adored his fans. I've heard countless stories of him being the nicest person to fans and always taking time to chat with them and sign stuff for them. He was one of my biggest inspirations in music. A genius on guitar. To know he was gunned down like that by somebody is just one of the greatest tragedies I can recall in life. Thank you for inspiring guitarists like myself and so many others, Dime. RIP.
Met the Abbot bros in south Florida in 90’s. I was young. Watched them with anthrax and coal chamber. They were hanging around the bar during anthrax and literally talked to everyone who talked to them. Amazing guys. To see how drunk he was then to see him on stage like a maniac surgeon on guitar is incredible. As young as I was I knew he was great. Like a man amongst men on guitar
Pantera was literally the music of my youth. I even played in a tribute band. I was depressed for months when this happened. I'm grateful to have seen Pantera live 7 times, Damageplan 1 time. Met Dime and Vinnie and have their autographs tattooed over on me. In my opinion Dime was and will be the best Metal guitarist to have ever lived.
Decent documentary, unfortunately not a lot of people are interested in researching Nathan Gale's past - which paints a better image of how messed up he was. This is one of the first assassinations that involved a mass shooting aspect as well. A great book to read about this incident is A Vulgar Display of Power: Courage and Carnage at the Alrosa Villa by Chris Armold - which depicts the lead up to the shooting, Nathan's past, and stories that bring to life the victims besides Darrell. It broke my heart to read, but it was also eye-opening and really shows how deep the seeds of mental illness are often sewn. What a lot of people don't realize is that Dime wasn't the only target - Gale was out to kill him AND Vinnie Paul. After falling to the ground with Mayhem and Dime's body, shooting dime dead with one last shot; Gale turned towards the rear - facing the drum area. Thompson quickly realized Dime was dead, and lunged one last time towards Gale - leading to the final melee that left Thompson shot twice and dying on the stage. Many onlookers feel that Mayhem was a hero for doing this, as Gale was ready to continue his slaughter unhindered. When Mayhem Thompson ripped Gale's glasses off during their final struggle, Gale chose to grab a hostage (Kat Brooks) and look for his glasses before moving on to find Vinnie. This never happened, as no one wanted to help Gale find his glasses. Someone at one point yelled " What do you want, man? " - to which Gale replied - " I want my fucking glasses! ". Erin Halk and Nathan Bray are also posthumous heroes. Halk attempted to charge Gale when the shooting paused during a reload. A former Marine himself, Halk tried with everything he had, including a broken beer bottle, to help stop the murderer. Nathan Bray was shot deliberately even though he posed no threat, Gale wanted no one on stage coming near him - he didn't care that Bray was trying to help save lives by performing CPR. Bray put his arms up; surrendering to the madman before being executed. The saddest part to me about that night is that in my opinion - Gale did kill Vinnie Paul - emotionally. He would never be the same, and I truly feel that he would have lived longer had his brother not died like that. RIP Dime and Vinnie, from a true Texas Pantera fan for life. We miss you to this day, and I still get chills down my spine when I watch the old concerts here on UA-cam. Thank you again, Crime Spot for a great video!
You spoke facts my man🙏...but whats even sadder about that whole tragic incident, is that Phil Anselmo took all the blame and to even went so far out of blaming phil for dimes death over some stupid magazine interview conspiracy
@@ghostdog6193 Phil's apology video really aggravated me. He started it off by saying, "This is not about me," and then went on to essentially make the video all about him. Phil always projected an image of strength and toughness and integrity, which his heroin addiction absolutely destroyed. I think in the aftermath of his overdose, he withdrew even more into his own ego and is now to the point where he simply can't come back to a more reasonable mindset. The dude had the world in his hands and he fucked up royally just so he could be the biggest star on the stage with bands that very few people will remember even a decade from now. But at the same time, I don't blame him one bit for Dime's death. That's on Dime's killer and no one else.
@@ghostdog6193 I think one of the biggest indicators of Phil's narcissism (at least at the time of the Metal Hammer interview) is that he said that "Dime isn't a very big guy. One punch from me would basically vaporize him" (or words to that effect). Meanwhile, in all the old pictures of them, he and Dime are pretty much the exact same size. To me, that statement indicates a lot of conceit on Phil's part. Plus, it's pretty easy to see that Dime was a very non-violent guy. He didn't have a mean bone in his body. Phil was being nothing more than a schoolyard bully when he said that shit.
Eddie’s word is so beautiful, even Dime’s death is unchangeable truth, his legacy and footprints remains with this sentence. What a sophisticated and polished mind he has.
That's the mark of a real guitarist, you can tell it's them playing as if they invented their own accent. most just do impressions of those who unlock that ability.
I spent an entire day with Darrell. He did a clinic at the music store I was the guitar manager in E. Hartford, CT. He was as down to earth as I ever met. R.I.P.
@@MirrorMindYT I chuckled at that, not even thinking that there would probably be some idiots saying "that's not true!" Of course it's not true...it's so ridiculous, that if YOU don't know that it's a joke, then there's a problem with YOU.
I know this is an old thread but had to comment. I had the privilege of meeting Darrell in 1985 at a hole in the in Muenster Tx. My sisters band opened for them so I got to hang out in the “green room” which was more like a storage closet but still cool. Pantera played 3 sets that night between each set they would hit the green room for a break. My sister introduced me to Darrell and Vinnie both super nice guys. Throughout the two breaks and even while we were talking Darrell never put his guitar down, he played from the time he opened his guitar case until he put it back at the end of the night. He was an incredible talent and one of the most humble nice musicians I’ve ever met. RIP D
I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with the band bac in 1997, and Darryl was such a sweetheart! We were lucky enough to be invited to go bar hopping with them, and one of the stops we went to was a strip club. But when you would talk to him and it was like you were the only person, and when we were hanging out on their tour bus, all of them (not Phil) made you feel like you belonged to their entourage! We had great talks about life that night, and I got to tell him how much Pantera helped me, and he hugged me! That was one of the greatest times in my life! God bless Dime and Vinnie!
Two corrections; both regarding Darrell's name change: 1. He was still known as "Diamond Darrell" during the CFH and Vulgar Display-era, but officially changed it to "Dimebag Darrell" by the release of Far Beyond Driven in 1994. 2. The name "Dimebag" was coined by Anselmo. While Pantera were drinkers more than anything (they've kicked bands off of their tours if those bands didn't drink with them after each show), they were also a pretty big "weed band." Dimebag's name was coined because he felt paranoid if he carried anything more than a dimebag of weed away from home.
I remember as a kid being toted along with my parents after shows, one of the house rules was if they offered you a shot of crown, ya drank it, if you got a blacktooth ya drank it. 😅
I never was a Pantera fan, I knew who Dimebag Darryl was and I knew that he died. I had no idea how fucking tragic the whole ordeal was and that he died so senselessly he died. This video made me tear up a little
Having Vince there to constantly drum for him was a massive advantage over others learning guitar....being able to play along with other instruments is HUGE
@@spiritlevelstudios I trained a lot with a drummer and the ability to have that creative cooperation will make a difference in both the developement of guita4 playing and Musical writing, because you don't get stuck in that A4 pattern of 4/4 Drum machine, as the drummer will most likely have that progressive obsession, which challenge you directly to follow weird but cool patterns, and messing around is a lot of fun too, just experiment for fun. This doesn't mean that training with a metronome and drum machine is bad or be a dissadvantage, it's not. Guitars are for music, so expanding Song writing will have a large influence on the guitar performance. It will as soon as you have a steady drummer to play with, but i imagine the advantage is starting out with it, you learn to be accurate very fast.
I met Dimebag in the '90s when he was in town for a Washburn Guitars event at my old friend's music store where I was service manager in the electronics section. He was a great person and an amazing guitarist. I wish I could have spent more time talking about music with Dimebag, but my then-girlfriend was too impatient to stick around and was the one driving. Her attitude and the near-fatal wreck her road rage eventually caused are huge factors in her being an ex now.
I’d have to say this is by far the greatest tragedy in music history. Yes other musicians have been murdered, Lennon , Selena etc, and yes the day the music died with buddy holly, big bopper and Ritchie valens in the plane crash was tragic, but NO ONE has ever been murdered on stage while performing, in FRONT of their own fans. To me that just makes this beyond devastating. Imagine how insane the media coverage would Have been had this exact scenario unfolded at a Michael Jackson concert or Elton John or someone like Britney Spears, they would have made a movie about it. But because DamagePlan was not massively known, it gets none of the attention it deserves in regards to how tragic and shocking of a hit this actually was. Murdered on stage in front of your fans, not to mention all the other poor people who were lost that day as well. So sad. RIP Dimebag
Dimebag as you stated, was such a good dude. I felt like I lost one of my best friends and I never met him, it was such a sad time. The world needs more people like him, not less.
Pantera got me into metal when i first heard Cownboys from Hell in 2014, right before my 16th birthday. begged my parents for a guitar shortly after because I wanted to be like Dimebag. When I found out he had actually died (like a few weeks after finding their music), I broke down. I couldn't believe I had just discovered the most amazing band I had ever heard and this talented musician was just... taken from us.
Glad to hear the younger generation gravitating towards heavy music. Keep practicing the guitar. It’s hard. Don’t ever give up. You’ll be a badass one day 🤘🏻
My brother almost went to that show where the attack happened, but he was called into work. The story was on the news the next morning and my mom freaked out and frantically called him since we were living in Texas at the time while he was going to Ohio State. We were all very relieved that he didn't go. Dimebag and all of his musical projects are massive influences on me as a musician. I finally went to he and Vinnie's graves last year and paid my respects. They were some of the most influential forces in modern metal music.
You really might want to add music documentaries to your resumé. This was extremely well done. I never listened to Pantera other than in passing, but I found myself riveted to the story you laid out. Now I’m going to put on my cowboy hat and walk through the gates of hell and see what the music is like.
My husband and I were huge fans of Pantera. We had seen them several times. We got to meet Vinnie once. He was so cool. I also got to see Damage Plan. When Dime was murdered we were devastated beyond belief. RIP Dime.
The first time Vinnie and Dime played together was at their parrents house and it was the riff from smoke on the water and the 2 brothers played for like 6 hours over and over again.
Pantera's Cowboys From Hell came out a year after I started learning how to play guitar. I still wasn't an A player, but that didn't stop me from rummaging through every guitar magazine trying to find Pantera tablature. Way before you could just Google any song's notes you wanted to learn.
@@MM-ig1iv Right on. He's one of the guitarists that starting players aspire too. Up there with the greats back when I started (late 1989): Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kirk Hammet, Marty Friedman, Kerry King, Gary Hoey, Randy Rhoads, etc. His style and playing is forever.
Man it's scary to know that being a famous musician and making one simple decision like this could make a psychotic fan turn mad like this and is constantly hunting you down and you're not even realizing it . Pretty damn scary man. Billions of people around the world and it just takes one of them to be unproperly cared for or to choose a certain pathway to start a tragedy like this. Some people are just messed up man. It's incidences like these that make me scared for musicians and would hate to see forbid seeing fans when we got crazy crap like this happening and just random times being hunted down by mindless stupid people. What a weird world we live in
Absolutely agree!!! I really think Vinnie understandable had PTSD from the shooting and wasn't taking care of himself health wise in the 14 years afterwards
Understandable, I mean I can't imagine losing my brother we share so much together. What's life when you loose someone so important to such a cowardly act.
When this happened, my man literally cried like a baby. He's a huge thrash metal lover from age 12 on, and this took him to his knees. It still breaks his heart talking about that day. I know he wishes he could relive his youth, but who doesn't? R.I.P. Dimebag Darryl.
And the fact that he only asked for Eddie to make him a guitar. And EVH gave him the very guitar pictured on the art of the Van Halen II record. EVH was amazing. I hope they spend this last year shredding everywhere in the great beyond.
Saw him in Vegas right before he died. Was like 2 weeks. Went from being the best cause I finally got to see Dime, to the most shocking and sad. Coming out of High School class of 02, to a world of 9/11. Then to lose one of my role models shortly after, it was sad times. Im reminded this last year or two by quarantine and covid, and the loss of so many more icons of how precious every moment is. Keep fighting peeps. Rip DimeBag, Prince, Chris Cornell, Eddie Van Halen, Chester Bennington, Scott Weiland, Amy Whinehouse, Michael Jackson and so many more not even in music. Chadwick Bozeman, Robin Williams, Kobe Bryant, Brittany Murphy, Carrie Fisher, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, and more. "Who cares if one more light goes out? In a sky of a million stars It flickers, flickers Who cares when someone's time runs out? If a moment is all we are We're quicker, quicker Who cares if one more light goes out? Well I do" -Chester Bennington. All gone, but none will be forgotten.
He's one of the reasons I picked up a Guitar. His music motivated me to learn the instruments and the music we love. Dime lives on in all the people like me around the world.
I will never forget, I was a junior in highschool, it was a school night but my brother woke me up at 4 am to tell me the news of Dimebag. It was beyond shocking and disorienting. The whole next day, I didn't even want to be in school, I was trying to get more information on what happened. Awful.
This shit breaks my heart to this day. My friend Mark and I started playing music together bc of Pantera and Dime. He was killed in a drunk driving accident in 1999. It was goal from then on to meet Dime and tell him our story and thank him for all the inspiration he gave and for helping me through that dark time even though he'd have no idea who we were. I remember hearing about the shooting the day after and it brought me crashing down again. Dime seemed like such an amazing individual and sweet person, much like my musical brother, taken far too soon.
I distinctly remember the first time I heard “Walk” by Pantera, I was in high school and one of my friends had gotten the cassette tape from his older brother, he put it on in my truck and it instantly became one of my all time favourite songs, I loved most of their music but “Walk” will always be my favourite since it was my introduction to Pantera! I was lucky enough to see them live in Phoenix pretty close to when they broke up, it is still one of the best shows I’ve ever been to, I still laugh when I remember seeing a bunch of huge dudes stretching in the parking lot before the show, they were getting limber for the mosh pit and I knew it was gonna be a wild night! My brother still has one of dimebags picks from that show, it was so cool how they’d throw cups of jack into the crowd without spilling a drop! RIP dimebag, thank you for many fond memories of me and my punk friends thinking we were tougher than we are while cruising around our little town! 🤘🏻
I can't pretend I was a big fan of Pantera, simply because I'm not a huge fan of Metal, but this is such a sad story... And his talent and influence is very much apparent by how other musicians still to this day talk about him. RIP to him, and the other brave ones who tried to help and lost their lives for it.
@Scott Grudziadz They *WERE...* up until the release of *"Cowboys from Hell"* on *July 24th, 1990.* From 1981 to 1989, Pantera was a *glam-metal band.*
I love watching little documentaries like this about musicians. I always wanted to watch one on dimebag because my dad "apparently" grew up with him and was friends with him. R.i.p. to dimebag and to my dad.
Met a chick at a club called 'Faces' on Dolphin road & I-30 in the late 80's. She and I began talking for a bit then her boyfriend had inadvertently showed up with a rough looking friend, they had been searching all over for her. She was Rita and he was Darrell, He approached us and was holding back tears and pouring his heart out to us both. Actually felt bad for him and ended up helping them patch things up after a brief while. He was all grateful to me for understanding and helping to smooth things over with her and tried to get me to come see him and his band play a few days later at a club in deep ellum. I never heard of him or pantera. I said I'd try to make it but never did. Good times though.
Called in to work , got wasted , and listened to Pantera all day. Greatest band of my generation, never caved to commercial success. Dime was just on a level all his own and the sound just got heavier with each progressing album. Truly missed , GOAT 🐐 🤘🎸
This was the only time I’ve ever grieved for someone I never met. To this day, I tear up at the thought of the senselessness that happened in ‘04. Thank you for carrying the flag for those of us who were keeping heavy metal alive in the 90s, Dime and Vinnie. I’ll do my part in making sure the world remembers the incredible gift you were born to give.
Total agree! Dimes Guitarskills is an exception on this world ! I'm playing for my own, but not even come close and twice not with that easy as he did ... Till to this day = uncomparable 🏅🎖🎼🏆🎸🎛🕊🤞🍀💘☮
Agreed, its so strange, I cant even talk about it with my girlfriend or family members without crying, yet havent ever felt that way about my own friends or family passing
I caught their last Halloween gig in New Orleans, LA. Just two months before the shooting. I recall being near enough to Dimebag, that he gave me a shot of crown royal during their “interlude”. Basically, if you were stage-side to Dimebag, shots were on him.
For someone who claims to know little about music, you've hit the nail on the head here. Great job pointing out details that are often overlooked. And you've also gained a new subscriber 🤘
My neighbor's daughter, Courtney is in a band called Iron Maidens and she met Dimebag. He gave her one of his guitar picks. Maybe a guitar too but cant remember.
I was born the same year he was killed, this guy's my favorite guitarist and really the guy I wanna live my life like. He seemed like such loving guy who knew how to have a good time, that's what I wanna be. So heartbreaking that I'll never get to see him. Love you Dime, R.I.P. \m/
I had been one of the older guitarist that played at a contest in 1981 called: Real guitar, at the old agora club against a 14/15yr old Darrell Abbott. He played a classical guitar and won hand dwn. I came in 2nd. I played with the Buddy Band that night we were given 2 mins only. RIP Dime. Actually, as first impression, dime references a 10 cent bag of smoke: back then
You deserve a comment, good sir. Not many people can say they competed against Dimebag Darrell and came in 2nd place. You must be pretty badass as well.
@@drmojo5439 disagree, glam is more flashy colors and hair that looks like a poodle. Unfortunately the Karen's have stolen the look. Wheras this gentleman looks more "ravens consuming black-berries out of a dead swans aeorta". Which falls on the heavier of the metal spectrum.
The Alrosa Villa was one of my haunts back in the day. When we were in high school, my buddy had a Metal band and they would play the Battle of the Bands. I would help them load in equipment. We used to see local bands in there all the time. This story breaks my heart that Dime was killed in one of my favorite places to go see live music. RIP Dime.
My brother was a huge Pantera fan. And I rarely seen my brother cry except when he talked about Eddie Van Halen putting his original guitar inside Dimebags casket. That's about the only time I saw him cry. But he also used to tell me this funny story about when Pantera were performing here in Reno, NV and the band just happened to stop by this bar where my brother went to after the concert called the Ice House at the time. Well as it turns out the owner of the Ice House had just sold and signed the papers to sell the Ice House that afternoon so he figured what the hell and gave the keys to the place to Pantera in which everyone proceeded wreck havoc on the place while everyone there had a kick ass time! This had to be one of my brothers favorite stories to tell me before he passed away unexpectedly this past March. Now he must be in 7th Heaven literally with Dimebag Darrell one of his all time favorites! R.I.P. all of you guys!
I don’t get how they didn’t blow up purely because of how two of the members are from the world renowned band Pantera, not just because the music was awesome
I was lucky enough to meet Dimebag Darrell on my 17th birthday in Anchorage Alaska right after they did a show in 2001. It might have been 30 seconds but it was the memory of a lifetime.
This was so, so sad. I remember this. My ex brother in law was in the music industry (still us) and he became friends with him. It tore him apart when this happened. Rest In Peace Dimebag………
The most special thing that made Dimebag so well loved, respected and celebrated will always be not just his music, but also his unmistakable connection with the fans. He always made everybody feel as though they were a part of Pantera. He always kept his feet firm on the ground and greatly held the fans in the highest regard just as much as they held him in the highest regard and that can never be taken away from him whatsoever. That said, may he and Vinnie Paul Rest In Peace. 🤘🏻🎸🥁🇺🇲
I love your explanation of Dimebag's nickname....fucking hilarious!!! I wanted to mention that I had the privilege of meeting Dimebag and Rex in 1995 at the Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Dime was the nicest musician I'd ever met!! A southern gentleman for sure....his murder is still devastating......
Dime and Vinnie were some of the coolest guys my parents knew. I was too little in the late 80s and early 90s to really know how big they were. My dad's band (local Dallas) used to catch up with them at after parties. It was also how I met Mama Abbott. Being neighbors with their mom was a shock to my system when I realized just how big they were. Unfortunately this realization came in 2000. I graduated in 2004 and just a few months later, tragedy. 😢 They will both be forever missed.
In my opinion now, Dimebag Darrell Abbott Is, was, and always will be the top of the mountain when it comes to playing and mastering a guitar. R.I.P Dime you will always be missed brother 😢
I remember this really wrecking Vinnie. A friend of mine was working security at a local club in Shreveport, LA, where Vinnie often came. (He may have owned the place, actually) I remember my buddy telling me one day that Vinnie had come in about a month or so after the incident, sat at the corner of the bar by himself, completely down, just drinking himself to oblivion and not saying shit to anyone. I think the majority of the people there, if not all, didn't even go up to him or even try to bother him because they knew what he was going through and understood. RIP Dimebag! You live on in the inspiration you gave so many people and musicians alike. I'm glad Vinnie was eventually able to grieve properly and move on with his life before he passed. RIP Abbott Brothers. musical legends who left a massive imprint in the industry.
I'll say this once more: Who would want to kill Dimebag? We all know Nathan was super fucked up and his mental state was all over the place. But too fucked up to murder one of the greatest metal guitarist ever. Dime is no doubt one of my favourite guitarists of all time. And I wish I could see Pantera while Dimebag and Vinnie were still alive. R.I.P Dime and Vinnie. Their music will live on forever! 🙏
I think because the shooter had been stewing in his fucked up mind that the band was stealing from him and at the same time dimebag being praised as one of, if not, the best metal guitarist ever, caused him to have such misplaced anger towards the band. He was probably some loser who spent his time in his own mind with anger and hatred because he probably felt that he should be on stage for thousands of fans for some reason and not Pantera. Mental illness is a scary thing when you combine delusions of grandeur and violent and angry thoughts. And the more Pantera was praised, the more that anger grew. What a waste of life
@@SpitefulGoose Gale was Mentally Ill. He was also an Iraq Veteran who should have been committed and given a Psychological Evaluation at Walter Reed , but instead he was Discharged and NEVER treated for his PTSD and Mentally Violent Tendencies. He killed Dimebag because he "HATED" Damageplan and was irate that Pantera disbanded. His Motive was completely asinine and pointless.
*Corrections and Additional Information*
1. 1:26 I completely neglected to mention Ace Frehley, who Dimebag was such a huge fan of he had a portrait of him tattooed on his chest, and yes I said Tony Iommi's name wrong.
Dude great video! I'm a huge fan of Pantera and my opinion is that you nailed it! It's a better summary than most vids.

If you’ve ever picked up an instrument, you know how gifted this guy was.

No doubt
Thank you!

Darrell was a very good person. I met him near Dallas in 84 and got to see them play live in 85. He gave me my first guitar lesson.

You really were there? Seriously you were there?
Yes, I was there
Ugh I had the honor of meeting Dime right before this show.

Had Nick Menza - Behler's drum tech - not already joined Megadeth then the lineup would have been:
Dave Mustaine - lead vocals/lead and rhythm guitar
David Ellefson - bass guitar
Marty Friedman - lead guitar
Dimebag Darrell - lead guitar
Vinnie Paul - drums
With THAT kind of lineup throwing off THAT kind of shrapnel then Metallica's Black Album in 1991 would have been sharing the overall number one spot on the Billboard charts with Megadeth.
I would only say RIP to 4 of them
Beyond sad.
I was on Anaconda in Iraq. I'll never forget reading the news that day.
It's so weird for people to be emotionally invested in musicians they don't know personally.
Duck dude. You actually made me cry. Dimebag was such a legend and an inspiration. Thank you for covering the story. 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Kudos to Jerry Abbott for realizing that being the manager would limit the band's rise, and stepping down.
YES. So many parents/managers are way too selfish to do this.
Jerry seems like one of the best fathers a son could ever ask for.
I know right? What a fucking legend
And now unfortunately he's gone as well.
I’m not ashamed to admit I bawled like a baby that whole day when news broke of Dime’s death. Still can’t get through any documentary of Pantera/Damageplan without tears flowing when it gets to this part. Just glad I was lucky enough to see Pantera live 5 or 6 times
I'm still bawling. Today was Dimes birthday 55.
If I had a dime for every time someone cried for Dime! You weren't the only one, my guy. Far from it☝🤘
I still cry about it on the anniversary of his death. Miss him so much
So senseless... Mental illness is real folks. Dime forever 🤟
I was born 4 days after his death the one thing I want to thank dimebag and Vinnie Paul is inspiring my dad and uncle to write and make music

FOR LIFE
I had the pleasure of seeing them in San Jose event center when I was in high school 1996.

I have that book. Signed by the author, Alrosa owner Rick Cautela, and Columbus PD officer Niggemeyer.
@@MickMcGarnackle exactly, you pretty much read my mind
Dimebags guitar tone was incredibly inspiring. Unmatched to his own sound. Miss him so much.
So true, people are trying to replicate it but there is not such a chance. That presence, those squeals...

RIP D

Two corrections; both regarding Darrell's name change:

Same for me, this is so sad
Having Vince there to constantly drum for him was a massive advantage over others learning guitar....being able to play along with other instruments is HUGE
slight difference when playing but yeh huge difference when writing i guess.
So sad. RIP Dimebag
You're right. We are crushed MJ died. If he died in front of us? Oh Lord. Rio to Dime, and what a tragic situation.

Truly missed , GOAT 🐐
🤘🎸
This was the only time I’ve ever grieved for someone I never met. To this day, I tear up at the thought of the senselessness that happened in ‘04. Thank you for carrying the flag for those of us who were keeping heavy metal alive in the 90s, Dime and Vinnie. I’ll do my part in making sure the world remembers the incredible gift you were born to give.
Absolutely brother I 100% get it. I felt like I lost my buddy who o had never met.
Same here dude. I literally cried when the news broke on my t.v. the next morning. Such a devastating loss to the metal community.
Who cares dude was a douche.
I have to admit, the “dime bag” comment got me for a second too! I was like “Dude! That’s not… oh, got it.😂
Thank you for doing this and sharing it with us!!! RIP Dime, Jeff Thompson, Erin Halk and Nathan Bray.
10:52 The Crown Royal bottle has 'RIP Dimebag Darrell Abbott' on the label. What an awesome tribute! Kudo's to Crown Royal.
Or a cynical cash in...😔
I caught their last Halloween gig in New Orleans, LA.
The guy thinks DiMe got his name from a bag of coins! So maybe he got a few things wrong here and should go his homework better.
@@brentparks3669 I thought it was a joke...
That was the spirit of Dime dude, GECTHA PULL!
Got to see him in concert in 2004 of march I'll never forget that day I was literally 6 feet from dime it was an unreal experience
Salute to you sir!! Hell yea. Thank you for sharing....🖤🤘
Dimebags were always 10$ 😂
Liar!
@@metalmind1949 James who are you calling a liar
Now there are some words you never want to hear, "a glam metal purist"
I agree, but in all fairness, your picture makes you look like a glam metal purist
@@lazerbeamlightningstorm5844 fair enough; just fucking around anyway, brother
😂😂😂😂
@@drmojo5439 Awwww come on man, it's a imag of " The Crow" I think thats about as far away from glam as you can get...

I don’t understand how Damage Plan didn’t explode with success. New Found Power was and is an amazing album. Every song just kicks so much ass!
I don’t get how they didn’t blow up purely because of how two of the members are from the world renowned band Pantera, not just because the music was awesome
New Found Power was okay, nothing inspired. It just wasn't as good as Pantera's last 5 albums. "Pride" was a good jam, though.
@@TheRecklessMetalhead When Damage Plan’s album came out, I tried to separate it from Pantera in my mind, or else I knew I couldn’t enjoy it.
🤘🏻🎸🥁🇺🇲
"Nobody dies in rock and roll."
But, they do and it's real as it gets.
RIP EVH, Dime, and Vinnie
RIP Abbott Brothers. musical legends who left a massive imprint in the industry.
this is actually one of the best music documentaries i’ve watched and i’ve probably watched over 100, you should do more like these.
