- Another ongoing episode of Andre Runs! Today Andre runs a brass RSD5 diesel across part of Howard Zanes many branch lines on his enormous railroad. To see more of this series go to My Playlist, then click On Andre Runs, to see many other unique engines running on this world famous layout.
Notes: The loco is a Perfect Scale Models (1970's) RSD5 and the interlocking tower is a kit by Alexander Models and my first ever structure kit I built in the 60's. Design is great and these kits can still be found at shows and eBay from time to time. I did not paint the RSD5 but did weather it and Jan Willard did the electronics. I love steam models, but this little critter is probably my best running loco out of about 300 in my basement stable. I'm still alive and the reason I'm not in these videos is due to me pushing deadlines on my structure building business. I'm also quite grateful for my three dedicated friends who maintain this layout....Al, Andre, and Alex. The "Three A's". Basically I gave them carte blanch to work and play with my set of electric trains.
Geeez Howard keeping the layout clean and in peak operating condition has gotta be a constant affair. Thank God you got the 3 A's as your trusted go to guys. Watching one of Al's videos where they were doing housekeeping was amazing!
Totally awesome layout been following for years thanks for sharing Best hobby in the world keep running those trains . Have a great day and weekend 😎🚂🫵TSM
Although I am not into diesel-electrics, I do admire that brass Peabody diesel switcher. I'm into traction and steam equipment. But, I do like some diesel-electrics. That diesel switcher is moving at a pretty good clip. It's fun seeing an engine going fast on Howard Zane's fabulous layout for a change. 😁 That was a nice run! 😅
The Peabody Short Line which was operated by Peabody Coal begin life as the St. Louis & Belleville Electric Railway. Cheers Rob
Al, The Peabody Coal company still exist but and operated mines in many states but several in Illinois and brought Coal up to the Mississippi river for loading at East St. Louis The rail portion was called the Peabody short line and in The East St, Louis area, it ran from a mine near Belleville Illinois and went west towards St. Louis area. The Illinois Central purchased the line around 1960 and long since gone.

Beautiful lauout !
Subscribed from Detroit.
This is the most bewildering layout I’ve ever seen. Just amazing. 2 expert guys who are actually mystified by these branch line tunnels. How the heck do you maintain all this hidden trackage? There’s always a bigger and better private layout somewhere but it’ll be awhile before I come across anything that tops this. I have SO many questions. Sub for sure.
Recommend you purchase the big book with 450 plus photos of the layout and story how it was built go to my Playlist then items for sale for info
that was awesome
This is another episode of Andre Runs. Video correction this is an RSD5
RS5??? NO it's RSD-5 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALCO_RSD-5; it's 3 axles truck but not sure that Peabody Coal co have RSD-5 only RS3/RSD15/RS2/RS27
@@christophelecorre7902 will correct in note
How long did it take to build all that?
Started in the 70s
Actually I began this layout in 1982 after three failed attempts during the 70's,@@alpugliesetrains9753
@@alpugliesetrains9753 Al, This is my 4th pike in this basement which I began in 1970 while my first wife was arranging the furniture......one week after Army service ended.
I began this layout in 1982 and then added a 16'x 64' addition in 1995, Then in 2002, roughly a thousand more feet was added. I won approval in 2010 for another addition of 1500 square feet from the county......but one day before the backhoe arrived, I got a call to build a huge O gauge pike in Colorado. So instead of spending a mess of money I had just as much fun building the O gauge pike and funds were coming in. Currently at age 86, I can no longer build pikes for others, but still build structures and occasionally play with my toys in the basement.
