I just had that happen to my washer. I'm in an apartment so I called Maintenance rather than self-fixing, but this video has taken a load off my mind. I was worried that the whole mechanism was one part and it would be an ordeal to get fixed. In hindsight that's unlikely since the knob is plastic, but anxiety doesn't care about logic.

Cool beans. This is what's wrong with my washer. I wish GE wouldn't use plastic on parts that can wear out like that. Mine did last 20+ years though. Thanks!

I dont know why they use plastic washers. its the teeth that wears out a lot.pot metal or aluminum is a better upgrade

My wash machine kept eating them up . I finally figured out that the timer was not held in securly enough . Timer was flexing while moving the timer into place causing separation of the gears . This caused it to strip out . I noticed 2 more tabs on the timer that we're not utilized , so I drilled through the face plate inline with the tabs and engaged 2 screws . Timer is solid and no more flexing . Knobs do not wear out now because the teeth are always positively engaged . Hope this helps someone .

I see this as an old video but does anyone have the mode number of this washer so I can find out the correct knob to order instead of having to modify?

do you get electrocuted if you touch that metal part while the machine is on? because i cant get a replacement for mine. so i thought of just using pliers. but i wonder if water gets splashed on it.

The plastic timer inside my machine broke where the screw attaches it to the front face. Had to drill new hole in plastic and the metal and put in a new screw. Otherwise the timer was loose and wiggled, not letting the knob work correctly.
