Hi sir, do I open both eyes while dotting pupil height? Or close my left while dotting patient’s right and vice versa?
The closing one eye, L/R stuff comes from ancient pre-pupilometer PD stuff. Here you are concerned with only the vertical not the horizontal so whatever works for you - just do it that way.

I have never understood that. Always seems like one of those optician-myths things. I know the ABO loves it as a question. Personally I never lowered an OC for any reason - let alone trying to adjust for some lens tilt. Sorry - never made any sense to me, never will. Just my opinion. If you have reason enough to care then go with a free-form and POW.

Hi there! I have a question! When you're talking about the "magic 18" number for OC height, are you meaning 18 from the dot to the top of the frame or 18 from the dot to the bottom of the frame?! Thanks so much - love your vids! They're currently helping me while I'm in optician school lol

When measuring the height, do you measure from the bottom of the frame or bottom of the lens?

hello love your videos. I have a question..when your taking the measures what do you use as a fixation point? your right eye when ur doing her lef eye (and vice versa)...or do u use the bridge of ur glasses? i see colegues doing both ways..best regards
It shouldn't matter at all since you are only using the technique to mark the vertical placement or height only. To get a PD you use a pupilometer or an electronic measuring device. The "look here" stuff was from 40 years ago and a (poor) attempt at getting a PD before we had better tools. I'd say the less fuss the better so just have them relax, position their head properly, "looking at me", mark. John

It is neither. It is nothing. It has no value. It should be written as 0.00 for lens work. You may see something like +/-0.00 -1.50 on a stock lens package because that is how the printer is setup at the factory.

Sorry but I doubt we will be doing any more lens "testing." That really is best left to an independent engineering testing laboratory. We don't have the time or resources to create true testing rigs and determine the proper comparison testing. If we do a at-home DIY version the social media trolls will eat us alive - and to some extent - rightfully so. Of course nothing stopping you from doing some! John

So if the seg height is 25 would I order a lens with a 18 seg height or would I order a MD 18 Progressive?
Yes for anything measuring over 18 you still choose a lens designed for an 18. 19, 20, 22, 24, 34, 45 --- you want that fitting cross right where is should be and then you want a corridor that is a comfortable length for the eye and power - you will find that when you use a lens designed for a MFH of 18. There is a video all about that! John

@@Aventious Hmmmm... in a way I suppose it does. If you use an electronic measuring device and provide the lab with all the fitting parameters they could use the lens design software to calculate the best possible corridor length. I'm still not sure I'd recommend going with a frame that doesn't give you the magic 18. Does a free-form lens overcome squeezing 2.50D of add into a space of 5mm, no, no not doesn't.
Will the laboratory normally be able to consider two right and left vertex (bvd) values? or a single value is always used? Is a small difference of 2mm insignificant?
Why do you not measure when the head is in a neutral position? It seems like your eye weren't at the same level as hers.
Hello, sir. I have lifelong ptosis which is worse with my right eye. I'm also in my upper 60s and have been told that age can exacerbate this problem. (But I don't want to have eyelid surgery.) Every pair of glasses I've ever owned have seemed to make it worse, because the close-up or reading area of the lens is too narrow, making it necessary to raise my chin so high that my eyelids are practically closed in order to look through that too-narrow area at the bottom of the lens! Because I am often using a laptop or a smartphone for long periods, it is becoming more and more difficult to raise my upper lids when I look up through the intermediate and distance part of the lens. (I hope I'm describing the problem accurately-- it's hard to put into words.) Does an Optician have the ability to make the close-up area of the lenses extend much higher than they are now (like the whole bottom half of the lens), and make the intermediate and distance areas smaller? I received my new eyeglasses today-- I opted for frames that accommodate a lens with more area, but the problem still remains. Am I asking for something that just can't be done?

Having watched the video you linked to, I understand you to be saying that simply increasing the area of the near/reading part on a progressive lens is NOT really possible; it that right? In other words, I'm asking for something that is actually too complicated to achieve on a regular progressive lens?

But - no - you can't have a true progressive lens with full distance-intermediate-near in "extra-wide/extra-tall." As we say over and over and over - "A progressive lens isn't the answer to everything."

I was taught yeeeeeeears ago that you can use the pd ruler for seg heights. Why do you say that this is the incorrect way of doing it? And if you see someone taking heights this way to run away. Ive been doing it this way since I graduated school back in 2004 and havent had a problem. When I see someone taking heights by marking the demo lens I see this as amateurish and non skilled. But thats my opinion like you being against using a pd ruler is your opinion.
As always - If you have a way of doing something that works accurately and consistently then by all means keep doing it.
You may notice I'm fine with seg gauges which are mm rulers but mm rulers that are held in the perfect fixed position.
My problem with using a PD stick for a fit height is holding it in a consistent position, finding a way to hold it that isn't awkward for the customer/optician, reading it correctly, not having a reference mark you can return to and that PD sticks vary. I could probably keep going - so IMO not a good method and certainly not one I would teach a newbie or encourage anyone to use. John
I too agree with Yuri as I accurately measure Seg heights with my PD ruler. I also agree with John about himself not teaching or supporting that method to others as I had many years of practice between many different places and when you are paying for the lenses yourself as an independent you don't want to waste your labs or your money. I was very fortunate to learn from awesome opticians who knew their stuff. Thanks for your educated input as well both of you!🤙

Thanks as always for your helpful videos. 2 questions I'd like your tips on. What about dilated pupils? Any tips on how to dot that center or lower pupil? Also, with golfers I tend to hear them request to fit low for when they look down at the ball. Is it just best to fit them in a distance focused pal instead? Many thanks!
Shouldn't matter since the center is still the center. If you fit to the lower and the pupil is dilated then subtract 1mm. Would be a reason for an electronic measuring device. A stated in the video (I think) you NEVER fit a progressive high or low. IOT makes a progressive designed specifically for the needs of a golfer. Of course a lined bifocal set low is always an economical option.
If dilated and fitting at lower pupil, add 1mm to my seg ht or subtract 1mm to my seg height? Just making sure I understand that part correctly. Thank you so much!
