Footage of Secretariat winning the 1973 Belmont by 31 links and how amazed Ron Turcotte was at the accomplishment. Penny Chenery gives her two cents about the horse as well.
Secretariat’s record speaks for itself. Once in a lifetime racehorse.
Same as the great speed skater Eric Heiden with his 5 golds in Lake Placid in 1980.What he did will not happen again.I had the thrill of meeting him at a bike race near San Diego in June of that year.
Ron Turcotte deserves so much credit for the wins. I mean secretariat had wings, he flew, he was a gift from God, but he also needed a driver and that was Ron.
Agreed, no hate against Feliciano but he just wasn’t meant for Red.
There will only be one Secretariat! The way it should be! Perfection in motion ....
Secretariat is the greatest race horse ever, period. All these people saying no this horse is better blah blah, records don’t lie, this horse STILL holds record breaking times at these races that no other horse has ever come close to.
this race still brings tears to my eyes. I consider this performance the single greatest athletic achievement EVER. and it was accomplished by a horse. The jockey was along for the ride of his life. unlike other prior athletic achievements this one will never be broken. THAT'S how awesome Secretariat was. Absolutely incomparable.
I cry also.
RaleighLink14 2:24:00 secretariat triple crown win at Belmont. Justify yesterday finished 4 seconds later than secretariat. Justify final time 2:28:18
PEOPLE WANTS TO BELIEVE WHAT THEY BELIEVE N THERE MINDS LIKE U SAID NUMBERS NEVER LIE THATS REAL
Agree wholeheartedly.
As great a horse as Secretariat was (arguably the greatest), he had a great team around him. Lucien, Eddie and Charlie had that horse in peak condition for Ron who then had the good sense to let the horse loose when he was ready. And they all seemed like humble, gracious people just like Penny. What a dream team!!
Right on! All the people seemed nice and tried to never trash talk other horses and riders. Nice can never be over rated. I think the wholesomeness is one of the reasons so many people wished the team the very best luck on the track and off. Just remember the awful political upset we had to deal with that summer! Nice polite people with a nice, well behaved horse was good medicine.
Agree
Like Charlie Davis said about Secretariat “we didn’t make him he made us”
Secretariat knew he was FAST and he loved to show it. Awesome horse. RIP Secretariat!
The longer he ran the faster he ran ,no other horse will ever duplicate that.
secretariat was all heart.
Wish we could have seen him run at 4 yrs old.
Me too, so much, it would shut up for good all of these naysayers, there wasn't and hasn't been, a horse born yet (2021) that could outrun Secretariat when he was right, and the farther he ran, the tougher he was.
He won on dirt, mud, and on the turf, set several WORLD RECORDS, always in a hand ride. I Thank God that I had the honor and the privilege to see him run, there will never be another Secretariat, at least not in my lifetime.
@@Makado14 AMEN
@@Makado14 Turcotte thought that he was actually better on turf than dirt, although he only ran two races on turf, one of which was the final race of his career.
@@Whoopdido777 yes, the last race was the Canadian turf international, the champion Canadian turf horse, Kennedy Road, led to the backstretch then Secretariat who was under a firm hold, came up and these two ran to the far turn, Kennedy Road couldn't keep up the pace and Secretariat started pulling away, winning by 6 1/2 lengths which was essentially no more than an easy workout for him. I don't know if you have seen this race, but the image of Secretariat coming down the stretch, in the dark, with snow falling, white plumes of breath billowing out of his nostrils, is something I will never forget, it was surreal, and he became immortal to me...
@@Makado14 I have seen it. Yes, the image his breath coming out of his nostrils was pretty cool. Also I happened to notice two things. First of all I thought it looked like kind of a practice run for him. It looked like he was hardly trying. There was just one time when he stepped on the gas and that was at the the top of the stretch. He and Kennedy Road were kind of battling and then Secretariat was like “screw this” and then he just took off and suddenly he was 6 lengths in front.
He was the horse GOD BUILT!!!
I watched this on our little black and white tv with my aunt! We screamed. The fastest horse ever!
Hope U still have that B & W TV!
I have a great great granddaughter of secretariat and she has his temperment thru and thru and just as big
That's awesome so do I looking to breed with storm cats grandson.
On her mother's side her grandfather is storm cat
It warms our hearts when we hear he lives on....he was the greatest...
I remember him! Absolutely one in a billion horse. Just unbelievable and beautiful
You couldn't ask for a better heart in the racing world than him
There is only 1 Secretariat, and there will never be another, not even his children.
I was a 9 year old girl seeing in person this race the derby something I'll never forget secretariat was truly a blessing from god...RIP BIG RED 😢😇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇
I was six years old and this was the first race my late father had me watch. "This is HISTORY!" he said. He was right. Then he had me handicapping harness tracks at age seven, teaching me all gambling games in a quest to see that I was never hustled.
American Pharaoh = Horse of the decade
Man o War - Horse of the century
Secretariat - Horse of the millenium
+Mike K Most experts agree. =)

Micheline Kribs Agree with most of your post, but I believe it was Riva Ridge who saved the Farm actually.
Dan Patch = Greatest horse who ever lived
Meadow Skipper = Greatest sire who ever lived
Big red the greatest horse of all time.
+Kevin Small So you saw MOW? Charles Hatton did and said without question Secretariat was the better horse. MOW had no competition. Secretariat defeated Forego (HOF), Cougar II (HOF) and Riva Ridge (HOF) Kennedy Road, Anialte Em, Key to the Mint, Sham. A better bunch than John Henry and Sir Barton. Comparing MOW and Secretariat is futile.
None of the Blood Horse 7 saw both. Beauty Contest. horseracingnation has Secretariat rated #1. They are too close to call and way too far apart in years -like 50+
+Kevin Small MOW had to go against a crop of like 2,000 foals & a small percentage of that as potential racehorses...In Secretariat's day the crop was like 20,000... BIG difference. Easier to be champ when you're up against so few.
Secretariat was an extraordinary, exquisite enigma! The numbers speak for themselves!!! Ronnie Turcotte knew exactly what to do, he let him run! A lesser horse most likely would have dropped. Secretariat didn't even break a sweat! All you haters take notice. Genetics be it recessive or dominate will materialize. I don't think that I will see it in my lifetime, but I truly believe that he will rise again!
Dan Patch = Greatest horse who ever lived
Meadow Skipper = Greatest sire who ever lived
Indeed ! HE WAS ELVIS and ALI in a horse !! BOTH of their " MAGNITUDE " ..I am 55 and remember all of them well, because I LOVE ALL 3 of them !!
It was magic and so many people came together to cheer Secretariat.
The world is full of crazy people this horse was amazing you cannot take anything from him because he didn't make babies to do exactly what he did God choose secretariat to took flight. RIP SECRETARIAT WE LOVE U AND YOUR LOVE FOR RUNNING
You Can Breed. Genetics....
You Can't Breed. HEART
Those genes just have to come together at the right time they are there but must happen at the right time and they did in this horse
Chris Chenery did! And don't forget Riva.
Clint Whatley you are so right
Secretariat was a screen hog - so intelligent and charismatic! RIP LEGEND ! You will never be forgotten!
Secretariat was a great athlete. No other horse has even come close to his accomplishments. Did you know he was one of the only race horses who actually knew his owner?
what u mean?
@@schopen-hauer - Secretariat recognized his owner Penny Chenery even though he worked with his trainers and handlers a lot more. He, like many high-spirited animals, didn't care for strangers - but Penny was no stranger.
@@kegginstructure and did you know Riva Ridge was actually her favorite?
@@TheJustjim3333 That’s probably because Riva Ridge saved her stable from financial ruin. Things were bad at the farm and everybody in the family wanted to sell, but Penny was the only one who even enjoyed the horses. Then Riva Ridge came around and became a champion horse in 1971 and money started flowing in so the family stopped trying to get Penny to sell. So much was made about the coin flip that ultimately led to Penny getting Secretariat, but without Riva Ridge, Secretariat probably would have gone to somebody else and who knows how things would have turned out.
RON TURCOTTE WAS MY FAVORITE JOCKEY ITS JUST TO BAD HE LOST THE USE OF HIS LEGS WHAT A LOSS BUT HIS HIGHLIGHT WAS WINNING THE TRIPPLE CROWN HE HAD THE PLEASURE RIDING THAT GREAT SECRETARIAT KNOW ONE IN THERE RIGHT MIND COULD TALK BAD OF SECRETARIIAT
Drugs had nothing to do with it. In his autopsy, his heart is on record as one of the largest ever. Twice the normal size. Read before you post Mark. He just had a bigger motor than all the other horses,
Sham also had a large heart but Secretariat's was several pounds heavier.
@@pfeilsusan Secretariat's heart weighed 22 pounds. The average size of a racehorse's heart is 8.5 pounds.
Secretariat and his cousin Sham had the two largest thoroughbred hearts on record. This provides another insight as to why these two horses still have the top two fastest times in the Kentucky Debry in history. They literally had the two biggest motors in history and reduced a legend as Forego that day to an also ran.
I read that too. Necropsy showed his heart was huge. Lamminitis was the reason for him being put down at 18. That's one of the reasons Barbaro didn't survive, Swaps was afflicted with it. Those hooves pounding does alot of damage.
@@connorduke4619 and Forgo went on to be one of the greatest of all time. And although Exceller wasn't in the triple crown races, he beat Seattle Slew And Affirmed in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. After he retired and went to Stud ( Sweden or Norway). He eventually went to slaughter. Ferdinands fate in Japan. Now, there alot of horse rescue agencies, and farms for retired race horses. In Japan, after the Foals are weaned, they're turned out with retired brood mares; they teach the babies how to behave, and mind their manners.
Perfection - not even his little sires would one day run, dance, play, or show off so many God given talents - only one chestnut Pegasus would fly on land (and air?) and we were indeed fortunate to be blessed with this "sighting". "Shine On".
Secretariat has no equal!!!! not even close
Check out Seabird and the calibre of horse he beat (or destroyed) in the Arc of 65 and tell me if he's not close to Secretariat :)
The Mighty Frankel would of beat this horse
micky finn in your dreams maybe
micky finn why did your horse not Break all the World records? and Secretariat did? Those records still stand to this day.
@@6548ww because he didnt need to he used to win races by 11 lengths plus in a canter why smash the horse to bits to break records look after the horse
Best racehorse ever☺️🙊 secretariat best racehorse in history! Still unbeaten🏇. 🏇
Aimee Walsh 16-21 but doesn't matter. He set 2 track records
All three races in the triple crown are track records.
Speed is what racing is all about and Secretariat had them in spades!
Greatest race horse that ever lived. He set records that may never be broken. He loved to run/race and he didn't need any coaxing to do so. Back in the mid 80's, I took my 4 daughters to Claiborne farm to see him. No photos can show how magnificent he was up-close in-person. He liked my 4 daughters but not me much.
Lol
There's an "Old Saw" among Horse Breeders, that says..."You can breed the Best Stud to The Best Mare, and chances are that their colt won't be as good as either one of its Parents".
Secretariat did "Get" some good colts.
They just weren't as good as he was.
Maybe God intended for their to be Only One Horse Like Secretariat?
I'm good with that.
He did produce some great broodmares!!
His son Risen Star ran the Belmont in 1988. He crushed it by 15 1/2 lengths!
Thank you Big Red....you made us all so happy.
AP won the triple crown and is the great great great grandson of secretariat which once again shows him as the greatest horse of the Millenium.
so true TU
so true TU
SECRETARIAT was the GREATEST. (Proof is in the pudding).
AP INDY did not win the triple crown. He won the Belmont and the breeders cup classic in his three year old year. His record as a Sire has to unequivocally show him to be one of the all time greatest stallions in the history of the breed. His bloodlines will live on in the Thoroughbred forever.
well American pharaoh is descended from secretariat so it finally happened

Secretariat legend lives on. Such a majestic horse! ❤💜💚
Secretariat was a gift from God especially with his groom he would always have on music with Jesus in it and the groom would sing to him while taking care of him Secretariat was definitely a blessing from the lord and so was the groom Eddie Sweat a most definitely a blessing ❤❤
Anyone who criticises this horse better be a tripple crown winner with better time!
(3:50). This always bothered me...my God, he was the sire of General Assembly, Risen Star, Terlinga, Lady's Secret (OMG, what is the World could he do to produce a better horse, than Lady's Secret, she was a freak, a Phenom)
And he has proven through generations that his fillies, produced some of the fastest, soundest, endurance (classic distances) race horses to grace...no, scorch the race tracks all over the World. A Broodmare sire unparalleled.
Secretariat and Northern Dancer...Nothing could rival them in the breeding shed.
I get it....everyone waited for him to produce his equal. No one wanted the fairy tale to end.
But that would be the ultimate, impossible dream....
There will never be another Secretariat...He was a freak of nature, like catching lightning in a bottle.
We've been graced with freaks, from time to time ( without debating the greatest race horse of all time). Man O' War, Lexington, Sir Archie...they are few, and far between. But that's what keeps us going to the barn at 4am, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We may not get a Freak in our barn, but we may just be in the right place, at the right time, to witness the emergence of a winged god...right in our presence.
The beginning of a Legend.
Zenyatta was pretty amazing.
@@joshuareturns9907 no doubt so was Winx, Rachel, Black Caviar, Ruffian, Personal Ensign, Eight Bells, Ruffian (just a few who thrilled the world)
What about this filly Gamine....?...
We have been graced by greatness.
But Secretariat, Man O' War, Lexington have stood heads and tails over the past or present reigning prince or princess to grace the turf club.
I thoroughly and whole heartedly agree with you I saw Zenyatta run 4 times.
She and Mike were the perfect pairing. He never rushed that gigantic mare, and once he gave her a clear running room she ate up ground with that enormous stride of hers...she made it look easy.
She broke the race spirit right out of a few good horses.
Winx set a record that will never be broken. 31 consecutive wins in Australia s highest caliber of racing.
Which includes its own list of freakishly talented racehorses.
Take care Joshua, I completely agree with you. The Dancing Queen will go down in history.
Secretariat is a name that will be legend not only to the racing world but to the average person who knows nothing about horse racing. Everyone knows who Secretariat is.
Secretariat was God's horse
I truly care about all animals equally aside from my personal family pets. However, wether it’s an animal or human, special is special, and you can’t deny the magnetism that comes with that. Secretariat was a very, very special life. I wish I could have interacted with him and seen him run. On the track or in a field, either would be fine with me. Beautiful and awesome animal.
That year I was eight years old when he won it was insane because it brought me into the house to watch on TV period on the old Curtis Mathes and I'm telling you it was something else. You had to be there in 1973 to appreciate actually what happened.
I remember in one of these videos that Secretariat, when a plane was flying overhead, he would stop and look up at it. The guy said horses just don't do that, they don't acknowledge life around them in that way...amazing
The GOAT of horse racing.
Love that AMAZING BEAUTIFUL HORSE. I was a young girl. And after seeing that most beautiful animal. I fell in love with horses. 💕💜💜
Big Red was actually a freak of nature. A heart, physically and metiforicly, larger than normal. You can't breed that.
No criticism here. Big Red was the best. Musical motion wrapped up in a horse. Sheer beauty, poetry, and elegance. Will never see another like him.
Secretariat was a race horse. These folks who say he was a failure at stud just don't understand- there is no way he could have reproduced himself.
But he did give us many quality runners and was an excellent broodmare sire. However he will always be remembered for that magical Triple Crown in 1973 culminating in the Belmont for the ages. To this day I can't watch that tape without getting choked up as he turns for home. That's why Secretariat is so beloved: on the biggest stage he performed unparalleled. He was the best.
@@libtardlori7487 Absolutely! I too get choked up watching that race. I remember at that time we knew we were watching something so rare in our lifetimes. The film Secretariat recreates a lot of that feeling, too, and is wonderful IMHO.
It,s Secretariats daughters that hold the key to a blockbuster horse!
Ahh, yes sir indeed it is
The most amazing horse ever. Oh how I wish.I could have met him.
He didn't sire a Secretariat Jr.? Well neither did any of the other of hundreds breeders. It just goes to prove on how special and how great this once in 10 life times, maybe more, Secretariat was. That is what made him magical.
I love Penny ...she believed in that horse...so did the rest of his team! That horse was born to run!!!
Almost everything about Secretariat was amazing, but his Belmont win was a mind blower. To take that much time off the track record without his jockey, Ron Turcotte, ever touching him with the stick is mind numbing. It was all the horse; and you don’t think he was showing off? You bet you life he was and all way back to the winners circle when Secretariat heard a camera go off he’d snap his head towards it and lift his ears up. I saw it myself.
I've worked with French Canadians in the horse business and maybe it's genetic, but they are Fine Fine Horsemen.
I'm sure there are some bad ones, but I never met one, or even heard of one.
I only wish I could go right up and hug his big ole neck. He was amazing
I like he never used the whip he just let him run
no question the GOAT
He was an amazing horse.
The greatest and most handsome racehorse.
He became a GREAT broodmare sire, taking after his maternal grand sire, the wonderful Princequillo. And check out the video Secretariat's Girl, here. Terlingua, a beautiful outstanding filly one of his daughters, like Weekend Surprise, who I think, was dam of Storm Cat. AND the dam of Storm Cat, at one time commanding a stud fee of $500,000 !! So critics, take THAT !
I am old now but I believe that this horse today is a great leader in some country
There is only one

Excelente. Me emociono mucho haber encontrado este video en la internet
You have the cameras because he was a superstar and the best horse ever rode in the derby he's a champion and a beauty love that horse... Sham would get fooled every time I'm far behind here comes Secretariat LOL I've kind of feel sorry for him
Horses aren't suppose to be smart, but Secretariat seemed to know what was going on and rose to the occasion as needed for the triple crown. Pretty amazing!
Good interviews but Secretariat’s derby time was not a world record it was just the derby record and it still stands!
I believe Risen Star couldn't participate in the KD because he had sprained his leg. I'm sure that he would have won that too, if not for the injury! He was so underrated, but so amazing!
Risen Star was 3rd in the 1988 Kentucky Derby. He didn't have a great trip, forced wide on the backstretch and took the far turn wide, losing ground, but came on strong at the end. Have a look at the video.
Patty Healy maybe you're thinking of A.P. Indy? 'He was the second favorite on the morning line for the 1992 Kentucky Derby, but had to be scratched on the morning of the race after developing a bone bruise after a routine morning jog.' ~ from Wikipedia.
Toni Earl: You are probably right. However, he did have an injury. His owner wasn't sure if he could run the Belmont. He worked it out. What can you say? He is/was his father's son!
After all of the nattering, at the end of every day, only one racehorse has this testimony - "His only Point of Reference is HIMSELF".
I've often wondered, since he was running on his own when he won the Belmont by 31 lengths, how much farther could he have gone?
Some people have to criticize everything. They spend their lives in seeing the faults in perfection. Shameful. Pathetic little people full of negativity.
But his daughters produced great ones: Storm Cat and AP Indy, to name just two!
Even American Pharoah had Secretariat in his lineage.
There will never be another Secretariat. The so called expert horse writers voted Man o War as best race horse ever, and he didn't even run the Derby. Moreover, his times in the Preakness and Belmont were not even close to Big Red. Secretariat is the best race horse ever, and his records at these three races may never be broken. We are gong on 50 years, and they are all still in tact.
Lady’s Secret was an amazing race horse….Risen Star too.
IF ANYBODY CRITICIZES THIS GREAT HORSE FOR ANYTHING PENNY, THEY MUST BE A FRIGGEN DEMOCRAT
The horse that God built.
God’s horse.
People can criticise as much as they want, but he was the wonder horse that God created for us.
Times (statistics) don’t lie, still today, the fastest Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont ever!!!
This is undeniable proof that Big Red was the greatest of all time!!!!!!!!
It's easy to get carried away with emotion . When analyzing
Until that Belmont record is broken... Why even discuss it.
OH, they shld've shown that MOVE on the first turn in the Preakness ! and Anderson's call, it's right up there with the Belmont call and that 2:24 FLAT. Now last year high tech digital comparisons showed he also set a record, not the 1:53 2/5 but 1:53 FLAT !
That move was truly one of a kind. You never will see that again either. It just can't be done when the pack is at full speed, especially not the long way around.
I’ve been following racing including working at the racetrack including owning horses. I’ve never seen a move like Secretariat made in the Preakness. An explosion of speed. Not to mention he could sustain it. Best racehorse ever.
Como me gustaría que todos los videos que hay de secretaria estuvieran en español
Yes Ron knew that Big Red could run his own race.
Google Secretariat great broodmare sire and see what you get as answers to question as to whether he was the greatest broodmare sire, his mares in turn producing champions. bloodstock in the bluegrass is one.
Secretariat DID produce Terlingua, who gave us Storm Cat, and Secrettame, who gave us Gone West (sire of Elusive Quality and grandsire of Smarty Jones). Secretariat is one of the greatest broodmare sires of all time. Sadly the foal he produced with Genuine Risk was stillborn.
Risen Star and Storm Cat were notable offspring and he was a tremendous broodmare sire one daughter, Terlingua caused Lukas to change to thoroughbred s from quarter horses (there’s a you Tube showing that
Best racehorse ever. None come close.
He was big and muscular even as a foal and weanling. And I've read more than one person who has said Secretariat had the look of a horse who was insulin resistant. That would explain why he gained so much weight in retiirement...and insulin resistant horses are especially prone to laminitis, the condition which led to his death.
You got to love big red one of the greatest athletes of all time
Thank you. Secretariat was one of the best ever, and you're comment just brings this insulin festival back down to earth and reality!!!
I remember watching these races I was only 12 years old and it seems like yesterday every time I watch these races I just cry I'm not ashamed to say it it's just tears of joy rest in peace Big Red
Who are the 42 thugs, at the time of comment, that gave the greatest horse ever lived a thumbs down????
Jealous ones...
Jealous of what???!! Lol
Love secretariat
The greatest thoroughbred sire of the 20th century was unquestionably Northern Dancer. The greatest race horse of the 20th century was Secretariat.
The Horse GOD made!
I think it was Bill Nack who said, "his fault was that he was trained by humans"
something so Godly should never have lost. For me, Big Red is the greatest race horse ever existed.
The dream pairing was going to be Secretariat and Ruffian, but she broke down and had to be put down.
We miss you George Michael sportscaster who only talk about sports
Babe Ruth was the Secretariat of baseball.
