Love the track you used. So good. Speaking of tracks, it's amazing how slow they were going. By the mid 60s, race cars were completely transformed. And then they got seriously fast.
That's a sport-racer Bentley from the 1920's-early 1930's. The F1 cars in 1957 were much, much faster, and just about to go rear-engined. They were seriously fast even then.
@@maxrudder6091 Mm. When the Indy racers went to Monza for the 500-mile race that year, the pole time was just over 177mph. It wasn't until Peter Revson in 1971 that they were lapping faster on the flatter, tighter Indy track.
Interesting to see footage of the oval when it was just 2 years old (There was another oval before the war, but the present one was built in 1955). I recentely visited the Monza Oval and filmed also a kind of onboard, but then with a bicycle :)
I have been there to a few years back. Me and my father went there to visit the track and we could just walk on the oval part and the part where the races are hold on these days. Its a real shame that the state of the oval track was pretty bad when I visited. Trees fallen over the track, grass growing trough and bad maintenance... such a shame...
douma2001 I have heard that since then the owners of the track had a clean up crew semi restore it and have re paved most of the track to host the Monza rally, with the babking
I also came here to watch vintage Monza Oval footage and was blown away by the post-bop modal piano trio. Straight ahead hard driving jazz! Perfect for Monza!
In those days the cars were built for the circuits and not the backwards way round like now. Yes, safety was very poor but could have been improved to keep the classic old circuits going. Great footage - thanks.
great film footage................ i'm wondering what kind of speed were the running ? one other question...........in the movie "Gran prix" how did they incorporate the high banking as part of the road course ?
They’d run the front stretch twice in one lap. There were cones separating it down the middle. You’d exit parabolica and you’d be on the right side of the front stretch and you’d head onto turn 1 of the oval. When you came off turn 4 of the oval you’d be on the left side of the oval and you’d head down to curve grande to start the road course. www.formula1.com/content/fom-website/en/latest/features/2015/9/high-risk--high-interest---a-brief-history-of-italian-banking/_jcr_content/featureContent/manual_gallery/image1.img.640.medium.jpg/1441370678767.jpg
Nice video, congratulations. Can anybody tell me how was the track when the drivers ran on the oval? Did the drivers only ran on the oval or did they ran on other stretches of the track (apart from, of course, the starting and arrival straight) where the F1 cars still run today?
I realize this is coming in late, but the full race course with the oval was used in the Sports Car International Championship of Makes in the 1960s; with the race length being 1000 km; or 100 laps. Imagine driving a Porsche 908 or a Ford GT 40 for 1000 km with being on that banking for 100 laps; of course, the race had a two-driver tandem. The oval was no longer used for the sports car races in the 1970s.
Altrimenti come ? Quale forma potrebbe essere spettacolare e tecnicamente impegnativa da percorrere ?
I believe that in 1957, the Monza oval was used for an event called "Race Of Two Worlds", in which Indianapolis-type cars raced against Formula 1 cars. Since Indy cars could only turn left, both the Indy cars and F1 cars ran counter-clockwise. Supposedly, the fastest F1 car finished behind all of the Indianapolis-type cars that finished the race.
at around 0:51 guessing that section of track that was gated off to the left, was probably alot more level than the actual Oval section that they were using on the right side??? at right about 1 minute, that had to be one of the largest tire pressure gagues I have ever seen, I mean that dial wqas Huge...LOL
I would LOVE to see video(s) of the 1957-58 "Race of Two Worlds." Indianapolis 500 Watson and Kurtis Kraft Roadsters take on the Monza Oval for the only two races that were ever run there. Does anyone know of their existence, or if there are any available on UA-cam?
I was hoping to see the modernistic towers above the banking as scene in the movie "Grand Prix." For some reason they've always fascinated me. Wish we could've heard the Bentley's engine!
One thing to create an interplay of American and European drivers would be a few good ovals in Europe based on a sedan series. Great to see some NASCAR guys compete with you in one of your touring car series on 2 or 3 ovals.
Hi. My friend this is what I have... I guess you are forgetting how rare footage like this is and that the technology that existed back then to do something like this. This was recorded in a small film camera that not work on batteries - it does have a string that you have to wind and it gives you about 30 sec of recording time. It would be impossible to record a full lap in one take! Cheers!
Ah, now i get it why the Parabolica curve is parabolic nowadays. After the closure of the oval, the last turn had to open up to meet the outer straight.
This banking was built in 1955 to replace the 1922 banking. Why couldn't they have built the banking out of tarmac instead of concrete? Ovals in the US were already doing that...
