We all thought the fighter who lost to the former champion who was beaten by the champion would be the more difficult match-up on paper because reasons, only for them to actually turn out be an easier fight than the guy they beat to become the champion.
In recent years we've seen this play out with Leon Edwards vs Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington at 170, everyone thought Colby would be a tougher fight for Leon because of his pressure and cardio, but he got dominated. Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira, many of us thought Justin Gaethje would be a harder fight for both guys than Dustin Poirier because of his TDD and explosive power, but he got destroyed.
What I'm trying to say is that there's levels to this game. If you beat the guy who was a level above the guy they beat, you're also going to be a level above him as well. Topuria didn't beat Volk by luck, Holloway will not be a harder fight for Topuria than Volk.

@@TH1NK_BLU3_495 people said the same thing about Gaethje. Max has a legendary chin. But more than anything, the reason Max would have a good shot against Ilia is due to Max’s technicals. He is never overextended or out of position, very responsible guard. It will be a lot harder for Ilia to actually find that target as a counter puncher. I do think Ilia is faster and more powerful. Maybe he gets it done. I’d love to see that fight and pray they stay on the feet. I don’t think Topuri would have any qualms taking it to the ground if he can’t lay hands on Max.

Holloway looked great. I really think the broken nose was a big factor. Not being able to breathe changed the game.
It definitely did affect him no doubt about that. However, Justin dealt with a deviated septum that didn't allow him to breathe through his nose for most of his career and only got it fixed recently. So he's been in that situation before and it's probably why he was able to stay in the fight. Absolute warrior

If Holloway didn’t break Justin’s nose in the second round with the spinning back kick, it’s a completely different fight. Just spent the rest of the fight, trying to catch his breath and keep his composure.

Justin wasn't able to breathe through his nose for most of his career. Deviated septum or something, he only fixed it relatively recently. While I'm sure the broken nose affected the fight I think Justin was able to stay in the fight because of that past experience

As a Max fan UFC 300 with Max was the most exciting and fulfilling fight I ever seen in all my years of watching boxing and MMA It is not only what he did, but how he did it that makes that fight legendary. Moving forward, I see Max taking Topuria for the belt then defending the BMF with Conner if Conner is successful against Chandler which I think he will be. We see, go get um max!
I seen Izzy's video, llia was right next to him for the Max fight and he was VERY invested in that Max fight, When asked about his thoughts he sounded very concerned, Stating Max is winning...Like he was bummed out lol and when the KO happened he freaked out like everyone else, Then immediately switched up when he seen Izzy's camers guy pan to him lmao dude clearly was impressed, And probably thought to himself if this guy can stand toe to toe with the hardest hitting 155er, He can probably eat my best shots as well. Stylistically Max is a very tough match up for him, Great stand up, Cardio, Takedown defense, And insane chin. Imo Max should just stay at 155. His body filled out into the weight class perfectly and he could for sure pose challenges to every single 155er in the UFC. People forget that Max was pulled off of cards in the past for having dangerous weight cuts to 145. I think he belongs at 155. The Dustin fight skewed people’s perceptions of him in that division because he wasn’t in good shape for it. His body did not look like it did the other night when he fought Dustin. If I were Max i would not alter a single thing in terms of my body comp by getting down to 145 again. Stay a well oiled machine at 155

Gathje is a head hunter and was looking for knockouts.
Max is a volume puncher and was layered on the damage. Even if that spinning heel kick didn't connect with Gathje nose. The fact he was able to throw them at all and accurately and each one did subsequent damage. 🤷🏿
Max was still taking this fight regardless by Decision if not TKO/KO.
I was there and saw it in person and it was ridiculous and unbelievable. So thankful I was able to be there and witness it.

In all fairness, I did not predict Max to win. If you say YOU did, you're probably lying. It's reasonable to think that Max could not beat the guy, who beat the guy, who beat Max twice. What I said prior, is that if Max wants to beat Gaethje, he'll need to put on REAL size, and generate a lot more power. Well, that's exactly what he did. The contrast between the way Max looked in the Gaethje fight, vs the Poirier fight, is substantial.
I mean whether he was scared or not, dude can fight. I will say this though and Topuria said the same thing: It took only 9 minutes for Topuria to do what Max couldn't do in 75 minutes. Definitely won't be an easy fight.
