Lucky you ! Just a few tips, # 1. Get a big hat and long sleeve shirt, so you don't put sunscreen on your hands. Fish don't like sunscreen. #2 get at least 30lb line with 40lb trace. #3 small mullet are best, but other small fish work just if they have spikes brake them off. Big prawns are good also. #4 fish close to the bank. And find a drain. #5 should be number 1. Don't be complacent while walking in the shallows cast netting in North Queensland as there is lots in the water that can and will kill you. From the smallest jellyfish that you can't see. To the biggest croc also that you probably won't see. As well as the other things you already know, sharks and stingrays and stone fish. Another secret tip for you, now don't tell anyone this but always remember that to catch a big fish you need a big bait. The biggest Barra I've caught in a cast net was 89cm and I was luck that time as she stayed calm and relaxed until it got in the boat then it went absolutely berserk. But I have had plenty of net's smashed and shredded by good size Barra. Be careful and stay safe on your adventures, and I will be back up there one day, so don't you catch all the fish.

Those sardines you caught in the net at the end are good bait, mud cod is in my opinion the best live Barra bait you can use. Can find them in small fresh water creeks or drains usually where it’s pretty weedy and muddy
Awesome Luke keep at them your time will come took me ages to get my 1st Barra they ain’t easy fish to catch especially when there is so much great ground for them to live in up here.
You make me so jealous. I was brought up in Cairns and left for Victoria with the extended fam. I long to fish the waters of the Great Barrier Reef and especially my old fishing spot as a kid, Palm Cove. Keep up the great videos mate, I'm a new sub. Me and my mates caught 2 ginormous barramundi in succsessive casts in a cast net off a small boat dock. They were hiding underneath. They put holes in the net, but bringing them in was amazing, I've never seen or heard of it happening anywhere else, and I wouldn't have belived it if I hadn't witnessed it. My biggest tip for live bait, ask a local to take you and show you where to go, and try up little esturies, a lot of the smaller bait fish hang out in them.
@@lukefalzon I'm living in Bendigo at the moment. Not much sea around where I live unfortunately as it's sea fishing that I really love. I look forward to the next vid mate.
Those Clear looking Livies you caught are called Hardy-heads. I've never been able to get a fish on them. The ones you got in the Mowbray are Silver Biddy or feather bream, I've caught Barra on them 👍 Mullet or Herring are the fave 👍
Hi Luke fantastic video as for catching live baits try using a rig you can buy with 6 tiny hooks put some chicken fillet on it and you should catch some decent mullet I went out yesterday to st Leonard's caught 2 big calamari and 1 nice arrow squid it was hard fishing due to all the rain water is dirty good luck with your Barra hunting cheers Phil
Hey Luke, I recently went to south Cairns dental for a clean. Mentioned the the dentist my boat I just bought, and we started talking about your channel. He is a youngish solid build guy, and he said he had a big ass reef boat with a 350 horse on the back, he said he will invite you out to the reef one day. Love your work mate! I got a 70 Barra in my cast net and it’s the last thing you want, absolutely tore it to shreds! Now I live back in Perth wishing I was back in Mackay fishing for Barra
Hey mate I caught my first barra in cairns not to long ago at the Barron River mouth of machans beach on a live sand whiting you should give that place a crack you can catch your bait there along the banks as well
My go to hook size for live bait is a 3.0 circle hook. I have caught everything from 60cm mackerel to 90cm barra. Also who cast netting out of the boat let the net sink then pull it in while keeping the rope as low to the water as possible to help close the net up fast so nothing can swim out.
Love your video so much! I'm not familiar with Barra fishing, but generally you might need a bigger cast net(8ft maybe) with smaller mesh size(3/8 inch will be good). Also when you rig the fish you would need a little sinker as well just so the fish stays in the water and doesn't swim everywhere on the surface. Sinker size will depend on the current, just not to heavy so the barra won't feel too much weight when it strikes the live bait.
just a tip for in the future, when hooking live bait or any bait, make sure that you take the scales off of the tip of the hook(it might prevent a good hookup) and dont be shy to use a smaller hook
Mate, I don’t know what makes your videos so good but keep it up. Unlike the other UA-camrs I watch upload like once every 3 weeks but your just the best uploading once a week.
Great vid man, I froth for your vids every week! sucks you didn't get a fish but still, those drone shots were pretty cool. keep up the great work brother
Cast netting by yourself in a boat takes some skill. Keep doing it and you'll find some spots that hold bait on a regular basis. I put the boat in neutral then get the net almost ready to throw, then with a bit of momentum coast up to the mouth of drains etc and throw the engine into neutral, quickly finish getting the net ready as you step to the front of the boat, (you need to judge it so the boat ends up in the right spot just as you are ready to throw), cast the net then quickly jump down the back and wack it in reverse so you don't run over your net, I reverse until I'm dragging the net then into neutral and slowly bring it in. Coming in with some momentum means you usually get a cast off before the mullet scatter too much. A good pair of polarised sunnies helps. Real early in the morning you can sometimes spot the schools of herring flicking on the surface. If the tide is up too much, take frozen bait because 90% of the bait is up in the mangroves or down deep. That creek you fished there is particularly hard to get bait in for some reason but I've only fished it a few times. Some quality fish in there.
Absolute love watching your videos brother. I'm in process of sale of house. Partner, myself n bubba girl are coming up those ways for holidays soon. Should catchup when we do
I fish with live bait and I use 4/0 circle hooks with a snell knot and 4/0’s are plenty big enough if I use 7/0’s I’m usually chasing shark. Caught a soapie in a cast net aye 😂 and a massive dog of a mud crab. Also if you want Barra fish the Daintree river it’s amazing when they dance on the water
Probably wrong timing. Best time to cast net for livebait is at the end of lowest tide, while current start to picking up. Shallow bank as in 3:50 is great spot. I'm lazy to post comments. hey lad, try cast netting on low tide as bait is a lot easier to find if you can get to it. live mullet is the best barra bait in my opinion if not herring is good as well. try using ur sounder on side scan to find some fish and then it’s best to fish the bite windows as well as theyre more actively eating( eg. moon above). youll get one soon 👌

hey lad, try cast netting on low tide as bait is a lot easier to find if you can get to it. live mullet is the best barra bait in my opinion if not herring is good as well. try using ur sounder on side scan to find some fish and then it’s best to fish the bite windows as well as theyre more actively eating( eg. moon above). youll get one soon 👌
thank you for the heads cup brother I will try it next time :) where are your from Queensland
@@lukefalzon mackay bro
Like your enthusiasm mate
cheers mate :) happy fishing
are you from Queensland?
@@lukefalzon yes mate I’m in Townsville.. I make a few clips
great to meet you today brother.
Nice vids mate. If i was to offer you any help to catch barra would be to make sure you're fishing when they're most actively feeding. Early morning late arv and into the evening. Good luck
thank you for the heads up bro thank you :) where are you from?
@@lukefalzon you're welcome mate. From Mackay

Great video mate just wondering how big is your boat like how long is it?
thank you my friend means a lot :) the boat is 4m long
I’m thinking of buying a boat Thanks bro
Hi you need a electric motor on your boat so that way you get enough to worry about with the outboard going back and forward try way you have control the boat 👍🏿
I keep looking forward to a new episode only thing bad about the video is it's to short love the work keep it up
thank you so much man that means a lot and makes me so happy :) how are you?
What type if boat do you have I've always wanted to know?
Hey mate good watching your videos there’s awsome and your having good crack.
Question what brand watch are you wearing? Cheers
I really want to learn how to cast a cast net anyway good job 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hey mate by the way there is a Barra closed season pretty shure it starts 21 st of October
yes I just googled it thank you my friend :)
next time you go for barra bro put like a 2-3 oz weight on the line above the hook and try find some herring to use for bait or mullet
Casting for bait at the lowest point of the tide helps, that way the bait can't shoot up and hide in the mangrove
Great video…but just remember it’s not just males watching 😜 Us females like your videos too
sorry :) and ill keep that in mind hahah how are you?
Ya get there buddy ota night I got 4 in 15mins use mudcod get them in freshwater creeks best bait
