  • Late ice is approaching and the panfish are moving shallower and closer to spawning grounds. The ice is still about 2 feet thick, but the days or sunlight is getting longer, so hopefully it continues to get warmer and start to melt things to bring in Spring. I have recently heard of winter kills happening, which is usually due to low oxygen levels in shallower lakes that can't withstand long periods of thick ice and snow... it will be interesting to see what the winter kills will be after ice off of this year. Hopefully it's not too bad!
As for fishing and targeting, I have started to target weed bed areas or areas that I think will be close to spawning areas... for example, crappies like to spawn near bullrushes or pencil reeds a lot of times, so areas about 7 to 10 feet of water, off of spots like that, could be very good at this time of year, especially if there's weeds or soft bottoms down there too. The name of the game is searching, once you find quality fish, others should be nearby as panfish like to gather in schools. In the shallower water, electronic flashers may not pick up as many numbers of fish at once, as they are likely to be roaming around and the cone angle is cut off by the ice and it being in shallower water. So, I usually just jig and see if any fish appear. If nothing happens in 3 to 5 minutes, I am onto the next hole until I find a good one.
