like both the short format, and the quick tips. i use the echo often, but next time i am going to add some more gain to get that dirty echo. thx!

Greetings, first and foremost I appreciate you for helping out folks such as myself with your content, I’m such a rookie from Nashville, Tn. What plug-in would you recommend for a southern, 3 6 mafia High hat sound?

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 місяці тому

      hey mate!
so - probably something that can get you some harmonic distortion. sounds stupid, but the verve analogue machines could get you there super quick. I know it's hip to recommend fancy plugins, but nothing wrong with working fast.
outside of that - any tape and tube plugins would work great for that kind of thing...
but at the end of the day - the biggest contributor to that hi hat sound is the sample they use.
      cheers!

I used to have one of these tape echo units back in the day. There was this interesting little quirk that you could take the tape and slightly pull it from its slot, this would cause an effect not unlike what Fripp used to do with two tape decks... ahhh them good ole days! Anyway, you made me get this one too... (muted rrdsmgrrrrs)

@@TheSteveKinney so I think it has something to do with how it works on a stereo vs mono level
If I create a send and send stereo or mono signals to it, it’ll work
But if I try to put it on an insert of a piece of audio that is stereo it just freaks out

@@Squidaniel ah.. yes. Logic Pro... the program with anything but logic haha 😆
But seriously - if you have a stereo track but load a mono instance of the plugin, you’ll have some weird behaviors.
Also - it needs to be an AU.. if it’s VST3 I don’t think it will work. Although that shouldn’t be the problem.
Are you trying to perform live with it? Or is it all post production.

Hey man, I first want to say that I think your videos are informative and you talk about stuff that other people really don't so that's cool and great job! I do want to mention something to you tho. I have seen a couple of your "UAD Secrets" videos and I just wanted to say that you don't need to use these clickbait titles to get people through the door. Most of the stuff you talked about in the videos is common knowledge, heck some of it is super basic. For sure I didn't hear one secret here. A secret by definition is something that is not known or meant to be known by others. I mean maybe I missed something but when I click on a video that promises me secrets and just goes over basic functionality it's a bit irritating and makes me not want to view your stuff anymore. I mean a few of the points you made were basic facts about almost any delay plugin. They weren't even specific to this unit. Some were. I mean just your first "secret" alone. Are you kidding? It says "REVERB ONLY" right there in big letters. How is that a secret? The stuff about the meters and routing of the plugin was great, I wouldn't call them secrets exactly, but still great info not many may know about. I don't know man I just think you can do better is all. I appreciate that you take the time and try to teach people, that's fantastic! I'm not trying to come off in a negative way, I'm just giving my observations.
The final thing is that I have a bit of an issue with the claim that the presets are already gain-staged for post-production A/B so people don't have to. Maybe I am missing something but how is that even possible? How do you know what people's gain structure will be going into the plugin? Are you just assuming they are hitting the plugin at a certain volume? I understand that if you knew the level going into the plugin then yes, you could gain stage the plugins but there is no way for you to know what someone gain staining going into the plugin will be like. I think that may be a dangerous statement because a lot of new people won't know that and will think using one of your presets will just gain stage for them. Again, maybe I'm missing something or don't understand. I'm not a mixing guru, far from it. I do mix and master professionally full time but I certainly don't know everything. I would love it if you could explain it to me so I could understand better how that is possible.

This is a lot to unpack in this one. I’ll probably circle back around to it.
But to briefly answer a few things.
These definitely are meant to be aimed at newer users that may not know some of this stuff yet. Sounds hard to believe, but there are a lot of people who may not know this stuff - however, I totally see where you’re coming from.
Secondly - gain staging refers to making sure that your input level and output level match.
So that when you turn the plugin on - your volume doesn’t jump out or get super quiet. It stays the same, this way, you can tell whether or not the effect is actually desirable rather than just being tricked by a louder sound.
This is totally possible for presets to be calibrated this way.
Now whether or not the original signal is properly gained in the first place is kind of up to the user - HOWEVER - I make it quite clear in a number of places on what kind of levels I used to calibrate - with respect to signal level peaks and average level.
Not trying to pull a fast one on anyone.
These are legit settings I use in projects, and approaches I use in a lot of situations. Just figure people may find them useful and maybe learn a bit from what I’m doing in them.
Just a simple way to support the channel.
Genuinely appreciate the feedback mate! While I have some more of these planned, I DO have longer form content coming as well.
      Happy to answer anything else.
      Cheers brotha!
      -Steve

@@TheSteveKinney Ok that makes sense then. As long as you are telling people, hey this is what your gain should look like going into the plugin then that all makes sense. Yes, you are correct. Gain staging is the process of making sure the audio is set to an optimal level for the next processor in the chain in order to minimize noise and distortion. I hope you don't think I was trying to be rude. I was new to all this once and I remember how hard it was for me to weed through all the bs. You absolutely genuinely seem like your heart is in the right place and that's what's really important. Now I do this for a living full time but it was such a struggle because it just seemed like everyone was out to make a dollar. Look at half of these "courses" out there. They are just money grabs run by people who have NO BUSINESS teaching people anything let alone how to mix. To be clear I am not putting you in that category. I appreciate your response and it makes complete sense as long as you are clear on what they need to do first in order for the presets to function as they should. I had a friend who makes presets, he's pretty popular too. He offered me some work helping him make some presets for the kind of music I work on the most (rock/metal). He primarily works on rap. I turned it down because I didn't like that he didn't explain to people that they needed to do things on their end for the presets to work right. Or that they were just starting points. He would sell them as an all-in-one solution. I didn't like that.
Thanks again for taking the time to get back to me. The message came from a place of respect, I promise that. It's good to have people check us sometimes like that, especially if we have morals and standards. 🤝
