Hi Tera, thanks for sharing your amazing experiments with us all! I have a thought though, how well would washing in just water work compared to the methods you tried? I feel like it would serve as a good control for the washing machine, hand wash with detergent, and bicarb and rinse methods.

I have seen a ultraviolet light and fan system. Have you seen these devices and whether they work ?
Hi! Are the shoes that you used washing machine and baking soda methods made of leather?
They are not
My prefered method is antiseptic spray. Kills bacteria therefore kills smell. Are the shoes dirty afterwards? Probably. But with leather shoes I would avoid full water soaking if not absolutely necessary
How often clean them?
I would guess every time they stink (which means often)

My favorite way of cleaning climbing shoes is throwing them out and getting a new pair :)
jk I've always rented but never feel comfortable doing it.
That is hilarious! Cleaning them definitely made me want to just throw them out and get a new pair. They were pretty disgusting.
A good pair of climbing shoes is definitely worth the investment and in the long run is worth it if you stick with climbing long term.
