  • Hey folks! Today's video dives a little deeper into the cognitive load idea I brought up in my last video.

Regarding queueing: I like Starcraft 2's approach of a "one click, one action" philosophy. While I prefer having the strategy aspect in the center of the game I think exchanging macro skills for quality of life features too much ultimately makes the game less RTS-like.
If I remember correctly there was a large discussion in the AoM community about that when they introduced autoqueue.

I actually feel like his old voice-over has a more natural speech pattern and tonality
      But thats my opinion

It feels Almost too slow and artificial to follow
      To me at least

Very interesting video. How would you compare cognitive load in Age of Empires 2 to 1v1s in Starcraft 2? Starcraft seems quite a bit more taxing to me.

I think a big difference is how fast an army dies in SC2... you really have to watch constantly your own army in the fear of being caught out of position, think about how fast a marine ball can die to banelings...
While it sounds cool on paper (it makes the game more mechanically demanding), it makes the game more stessful and leads to "undeserved" losses. When I was still following SC, the community also complained a lot about the impossibility to come back from a bad engagement, which was possible in SC1.
Anyway yeah I feel SC2's cognitive load is more taxing, but not for the good reasons.

Also the general speed of sc2
      Is much higher
And combined with automation / qol the game can feel out of the players control
The game will feel like catching up to whats happening
Rather than being the driving Force behind it

I lean toward the AOE 3 queue for its convenience. But maybe there should be a reasonable unit cap so you don't go overboard swarming the opponent.
