Great video! You've answered a lot of questions I had regarding compatibility and functionality between the brands of devices and hubs. I have Echo and Harmony Home Control. You've shown that adding a SmartThings hub will give me what I'm looking for. Thanks.
Nice setup! if you like the fire tablet you'll love "action tiles" if you haven't tried it already, got it setup with my system and it auto wakes when i walk up to it and gives me local control of devices plus weather and traffic camera's and anything i want all in one screen!
THE most comprehensive set up video i've seen for smart homes. Well done. I would like to rehash, however....I do not need the Phillips Hue app if I have a Samsung hub? I will be controlling with the Google Max.
Important to know that the portion of this video that talks about Z-Wave devices creating a "Mesh" network. This is true but not all devices act as an extender to create a stronger and larger network. In fact most of the time if you have a battery powered device they won't be repeaters for the network. If it's plugged into direct power (Light bulbs, outlets, and Light Switches) will usually act as a repeater.
Very good presentation. The one item that you briefly mention was sensing the presence of your auto and opening the garage door. (I hope that you didn't mean that the garage door would open when ANY vehicle came near.) Could you elaborate?
I’ve watched tons of videos... but you talked about & explained so much of what I needed to understand! Short story, someone bought me an echo dot... now I want to go full HA! I ordered from amazon 1) Harmony hub 2) Philips white & color starter kit & I just downloaded the IFTTT app on my iPhone. Now, I was just about to buy the SmartThings monitoring bundle; which comes with 2 door sensors, 1 motion, 1 outlet for $160. Should I get that bundle or just the hub? (Since you mentioned the ST sensors suck).
Great video. I have a question tho. How do you connect your ceiling fan to ST. I've heard that you have to get a special transmitter to put inside the fan housing. Thanks.
can you turn your LED strip light to be connected to your smartthings hub without using these expensive Philips hue ones. I understand you can you use the Fibaro RGBW Micro Controller Z-wave but, I can find enough info for that, you help with be very great. Very nice video and good luck with your new setup .
The Wyze camera from amazon integrates nicely with Alexa. You can tell alexa "Show me my wyze" and she will automatically open a live feed of your camera if you have an echo show or a fire tablet. www.amazon.com/Wyze-Indoor-Wireless-Camera-Vision/dp/B076H3SRXG
Great video. I got a question about Samsung sensor. I would like to put one in the porch in order to turn on the porch light in the night. Do you have any ideas? Thanks
So you can go two ways. You can get an outdoor zwave motion sensor. Place it facing the porch, and when it detects motion, you can have your smartthings hub turn on your porch light assuming you have a zwave switch controlling the light. This would be idea for intruders. Second option would be a door sensor for the back door leading to your porch. When the door is opened, smartthings can turn on your porch light, again, assuming you have zwave switch for your porch light. This is ideal if your trash cans are on the porch. If you open the back door to your porch, porch light will come one, and you can have it turn off automatically. I've posted links to each products below. Good luck! Sure thing. www.amazon.com/Z-Wave-Window-Sensor-Nexia-Included/dp/B008Q5CTBE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1492646079&sr=8-2&keywords=schlage+zwave+sensor The sensors are made from schlage and are on a whole different level when it comes to quality compared to the smart things sensors.
it's good to discuss your setup but it will be better if you list all the devices used and how is setup. it will be help fill for us newbies to try to mimic. nice job though
I have a question about smart switches (I mean like the thing on the wall with three holes for my country, and you plug in a PLUG for like a charger, computer, air conditioner, etc......), when I send a command to switch one off, does it help reduce the current used, or is the current still running to power up the switch itself? Same question for the 1/2/3 gang switches.... mind explaining? TQVM!! =)
I want to establish a similar home automation project back in my home country India, where the voltage rating is 230V, 50 Hz. Mainly I wanted information on how do Z-wave switches work. How about their voltage and frequencies? Also, does the specific z-wave frequency change as per the country? Also, should I just use any other LED bulb along with a dimmer switch that would help me dim the lights? Why do I need both dimmable switch and dimmable bulbs? Can you please list down compatible companies for z-wave switches and smart plugs?
I love my Smartthings hub, but there are a couple of DIY kits that allow you more freedom. But me personally, would recommend Smartthings. And no, they aren't sponsoring me or anything. lol
I wish, but unfortunately smartthings doesn't support Siri yet. Just Google and Amazon. But you can get an individual light switch like the belkin wemo dimmers that support Apple Home Kit (Siri) www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F7C059/
Heres a link to the deadbolt I use. I bought it back in 2015 for 200, so you can get it for a little less now. www.amazon.com/Schlage-Connect-BE469NX-Touchscreen-Deadbolt/dp/B00AGK9KOG/ref=sr_1_1?s=hardware&ie=UTF8&qid=1492355349&sr=1-1&keywords=schlage+keyless+lock

Thanks for the response. I will check out the links. I did buy a Smart ThinQ motion detector and put it outside and it’s been working
Great video! Can you give us a link to the sensors that you mentioned that are better than SmartThings?
Sure thing.
www.amazon.com/Z-Wave-Window-Sensor-Nexia-Included/dp/B008Q5CTBE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1492646079&sr=8-2&keywords=schlage+zwave+sensor
The sensors are made from schlage and are on a whole different level when it comes to quality compared to the smart things sensors.
Great. Do you have the Nexia/Schlage Bridge as well, or do the sensors work straight with the SmartThings hub?
nope, I just have the SmartThings hub and both the Schlage sensors and door lock works directly with the hub.
Great. Thanks again. Love the video!
No problem, thanks for the support!
This could probably get you a discount on Home Owners Insurance.

Thanks. I had every intention to video the setup, but I got so giddy setting up, that I completely forgot to record it.
Monster Review which manufacturer made the zwave garage door opener? if you can provide the link, I will gladly appreciate it.

I have a Echo. I just received my smartthing hub. Will I still need a switch if I'm going to have Alex controlling the lights?

Very helpful. What’s the best hub to connect security system and lights?
