Nice video. Can you walk us through your set-up in the background. Looks like you have security cameras integrated on the screen. What are the apps and tools, equipment you used. A video in as much detail as you feel comfortable showing would be nice.
Building my smart home and I'm getting a lot out of your videos. Keep em coming man. Had never even heard of OpenHab before I saw one of your other videos. I'm a software engineer so terminals and programming are right up my alley. Thanks a lot for sharing!!
Hi, I'm looking for a simple system that you can connect to your PC via usb and to the AC power and configure it on the PC so it can power up lights, door locks, etc via wire by pressing custom keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl + L on the PC.
Great video! I currently have most of the products you mentioned in the video with the exception of the Arlo cameras. I went with the Blink cameras which do pretty much the same thing and are also wireless. The other exception is that I'm running mostly Philips Hue lighting since I jumped on the bandwagon early before Lifx was a thing.
Thanks, glad you liked! - I am in the same boat as far a Hue, but I anything new has been LIFX, I like making things simpler and not needed the hub is nice.
Thank you so much for the great video... I'd like to share something with you, some family members didn't appreciate the Idea of Alexa, so after I installed it with several compatible devices, I was disappointed to learn that some said that it's very annoying to keep on speaking or sometimes shouting to Alexa to turn on /off the light for example while one can do that via the switch which is much easier. I wonder how others find this...
Thanks Tarek, I think the trick is finding the sweet spot! Sometimes yelling at Alexa to turn off/on the lights just feels awkward. But other times it's great! Also if you setup routines that do more than one thing with a command it starts to feel more useful! Keep trying - I know some of the biggest "haters" in my life secretly like it in some circumstances.
Thanks for your video(s)!. As I'm new to this subject and before this video I have watched your video talking about OpenHAB, I wonder which of the products you have listed here, can be connected to the OpenHAB . I'm looking for one product that will manage all (most) of my smart home products
Hi Yuval, hope the videos are helpful. I have chosen openHAB for my main controller because it is open source, and thus works with almost any/all devices. (everything in this video) If it does not today, its open and anyone can develop support for products that come out tomorrow. For me this makes openHAB the main part of the system that can tie all the products I mentioned in this video together.
I have the Phillips hue bulbs. They work really well. We don’t really have amazon in Australia (they like to think we do but they are WAY overpriced so it doesn’t count) so we don’t really have Alexa and stuff. Google is way more popular here.
Hi Pink Magic! Glad to hear I have a fan in Australia! I know Amazon just started things there! Google Home is one of my favorites now and can do pretty much everything Alexa can, some (even most) better! Check out the LIFX bulbs as well, they are a great alternative to Hue, but don't require a hub to work! Thanks for watching!
I have a larger square footage to cover. I currently use one WiFi Hub and three wifi range extenders. What issues am I going to have with a home automation HUB?
Hi Fred, the hub itself will work no matter where/how as long as its on your network. The devices you connect have different methods of communicating with the hub, zwave for example creates a mesh network between the devices and the hub. The more devices you add, the stronger the network (mesh) becomes.
I have an echo and a kwickset kevo door lock and I am wondering what would be the best hud and whatever else I might need to have a great home automation. The door lock says that I need a kevo plus to make it work. But I see other things saying different hubs work. Any infor would be appreciated. TIA
Hi Lacy, thanks for watching. I believe the Kevo uses only Bluetooth to communicate and this is why they created the Kevo Plus to bridge the bluetooth to network so that it can be controlled by other systems like Alexa. I have seen some notes of people using this with openHAB but they say it requires the Kevo Plus.
@@yoyoTechKnows it's a pleasure I find this stuff fascinating. Busy building my own set up a bit at a lower price point because I'm in South Africa and 200 euros for products is expensive.
Arlo cameras are great, Yo! I bought a Canary camera, and I'm disappointed because the company wants to charge you to have a 2-way communication when the feature is free in other cameras. Have you checked Canary?
I have not used a Canary myself, but I know people who do. Nest overcharges too I think, I guess they need to find ways to make money! How do you feel about the quality of the picutre on Canary, I have heard it was not that great?
I agree with you about Nest. They charge about $10 a month when Arlo does it for free. Well.... The quality of the images of Canary is not that bad, but it disconnects a lot from the wifi connection. It is very discouraging I have to pay for their subscription in order to get 2-way communications. As a result of this, I am planning on selling my Canary Flex. I recommend Kuna. Have you checked it? The quality of the pictures is pretty good. You have videos recorded in their cloud for two hours, but in reality they last even longer without getting into their subscription. I think I recommend Kuna because of this "beneficial" issue... LOL. It has a 2-way communication FREE!
I'm sorry, but I hated the Ring doorbell. The hardware is fantastic but not only do they cripple the hardware with their software if you don't subscribe to their monthly service, but there's latency on the video feed since it has to stream up to their cloud servers and back to your phone. There's no API and you don't even have the option to save your own video feeds to local storage like a NAS. I was very disappointed and sent mine back.
FYI I've been working on a openHAB binding for the Smartthings hub. It is mostly done and a number of people have downloaded it. It can be found at: github.com/BobRak/OpenHAB-Smartthings/tree/master/org.openhab.binding.smartthings. I do try to respond to questions / issues quickly but I do have other things going on right now too.
thats not even a lifx bulb in the fitting you showed in the video of the lights. LIFX look ugly and square. I like the limitlessled ones they are more rounded and are brighter.
Hi Hamish, I just rewatched myself, those are LIFX bulbs? They have a flat top, but in the LIFX section thats all we see are LIFX bulbs. They come in black too, could be why you thought they looked different.
Thanks Seibz, I will take a look, looks interesting. Harmony can be found for around $80US for the base model, but thats all you really need. Thanks for watching.
No way! I spent a lot on BroadLink and regret it. The hardware is cheap, but the app is terrible. It is buggy and UI is hopeless. BroadLink started out well, but in the 5 years I have been using their stuff, almost nothing has changed and their support is pretty bad too.
yoyoTech keep in mind you only need the hub and phone app to setup to be controlled by Alexa or Google. If you get a remote with it that simply gives you normal manual remote control, which is my opinion is a must.
I do not trust Alexa. I really don't care for any device that can watch/listen to me all the time. We need a revolution in open hardware....I'm honestly not sure there is any real strategy for digital security/privacy going forward, other than open standards and small government.
This is always a concern. openHAB actually has its own voice control if you are interested, and with this nothing leaves your server. I don't think its as advanced as Google or Alexa, but if you wanted voice control, but wanted to make sure you were in control of it.....might be an option!
Ah, nice! Thanks for the tip. I didn't even think to look (was just going to go without). I'm also looking at Home Assistant, as it is written in Python (I happen to be a Python dev). They also appear to support at least 1 or 2 voice control options :D Thanks again!

Great info! I'm in process of buying my first home, and looking at home automation before I move in. Based in the U.K :) Thanks again!
Good luck, and have fun!

+BLACKNIGHT CODING glad you liked it, if you good in a terminal, there is a ton you can do in openHAB!
Great list!
Uploaded 1. August 2017 therefore the title is a clickbait
hey great vid, can you please make a video about that screen on your background please... very interested on that
Hi Carlos, thanks for watching. I am working on one for that - should be out soon! :-)
Nothin I need but thanx, nest thermostat is kind of cool
Great video thanks , giving me a good understanding of what it’s all about 👍
Hi Tim, thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe and let me know if there is anything specific I can help with.
Thanks for the video. It wasn't out when you made this but a deadbolt by Yale/Nest is now out and worth your time.
Thanks for watching - I will take a look!
Can you give us a once over on the carrier cor home automation system? pro and con vs the Samsung product
I’m interested in recording my ring camera locally using home assistant
I need the sprinkler system thing!

How do I interface home automation to my Honeywell Vista control panel??

How did you do your tv like that?
Just one thing to note. Your title says Top 10 Home Automation Gadgets 2018, but this was published in 2017 and in the video you refer to 2017.....

Whats your opinion about the broad link rm pro?
Looks interesting, but I have not personally tried it. Might just pick one up and give it a try. Thanks for watching!

What do you think to lightwaverf
Hi James, Thanks for watching! I am not very familiar with this company, appears to be only in the UK right now? I will take a closer look!

What is running on your large monitor in the background?
+jwestyp habPanel, it's and add on interface for openHAB!

2017 not 2018. way to change the title for more views... how about a new video in the future instead.....
Hi Sean, I did update the title as I believe it was still relevant! But, I am working on a new one in true 2018 fashion! Thanks for watching!
Knx!
Logitech Harmony is really overpriced !
Try the broadlink RM Pro... It's nealry 10 times cheaper and does nearly the same !
